It is RGB-LED or IPS-RGB-LED like the one advertized (still not configurable) in the Precision pages...? And... what about the DPI? The contrast? Oh! I know... I have so many questions...

The RGBLED screen has been ordered. I should receive it in about 7 days. Leaves me enough time for the Bigfoot Killer and HyperX 1866mhz testing :)
    Stay tuned.

There's also a possibility of installing a 1200p 30-bit IPS screen into the M18x. The only problem is it's a 17" panel, so there will be an additional 2cm vertical margin on both sides of the screen. The bad, the fonts will look smaller and you lose the extra 1.4". The good, you get a better resolution (extra 120 vetical pixels) and the best possible color reproduction and viewing angles and semi-matte finish with no graininess and no reflections. And of course, I will have to make a custom bezel for that.

Additional thoughts: theoretically it should also be possible to utilize the extra room inside the lid to add broadband antennas if there's a way to mod a proper adapter into the WHD slot (probably not?)

    Any suggestions/comments?

Well, if I'm going to get 17" instead of the 18.4, I think will opt for the M6600... which is set to offer (sometimes in the near future) an IPS-RGB LED...

    Isn't the M6600 going to be a 1080 resolution instead of 1200?

As for me, I would probably still go for the RGB LED. I would be interested in the other screen if it came in an 18.4 inch panel.

Don't get me wrong, the IPS is just a speculation at this point. First on the list is the RGB LED TN 18.4".

The IPS I'm talking about is the 1200P not 1080P(M6600). And I'm only bringing this up cause the 1200P is no more, this is the last chance (very slim chance indeed) to get the best screen of the dying standard.

    Hello everyone, I'm sorry if my questions are noob-ish, but I really need the answer as it related to my field of work;
    1. What is the color gamut of human eyes compared to monitors? Do manufacturers and technician design and calibrate their monitor based on what our eyes are seeing?
    2. Is there currently implemented technology that allows us to see images, either still or moving, exactly the same as if we would see them with our eyes (related to the colors composition and brightness?

3.Regardless of no.2 answer, is there any monitor/laptop monitor that you would recommend if I need exactly seeing things as if I'm seeing them? Either real time or recordings?

I have been following this thread for awhile and it has been very educating for me.
    Thank you

But would it fit in the M18x comfortably and centered, or would it be offset to one side? I think the 18.4" RGB would be preferable if for no other reason than it wouldn't change the look of the rig, and still be superior to the stock screen

AFAIK, human eye can see ~16mil of colors but with computer color gamut it's far more complicated. There are different color space standards. For example NTSC is far below what our eyes can see while xvYCC is claimed to meet and even exceed it. There are screens that can reproduce 1billion of colors and we can clearly see the difference between 16mil and 1bil.

I'll skip the #2 it's a very interesting subject but...

The best on the market today is 1 billion of colors -> 30-bit IPS RGB LED with ~98%? of xvYCC or in other words, very close to what the eye can see. For comparison, the stock M18x screen is only 72% NTSC or about 1/50 of that value. Sorry for possible errors in calculations, those who do color critical work can correct me.

Positioning wouldn't be a problem, it would be a perfectly centered. Anyway, the RGBLED 18.4" is the first priority. I may try the IPS mod later on.

    @Aikimox, I have a quick question.

Would the m17x r3 be able to fit the 1200p IPS screen? Also, what is the cost of said screen?

Thank you very much for your reply, Aikimox; according to your explanation related to what human eyes can see, yes, I do feel like I can see better colors in the so-called 1-bil monitor. I really need hard facts to back it up.

Actually I asked the questions because last week the laparoscopy monitor in our centre broke up, it just blanked and (thankfully) the technician took them separately to repair, leaving us with functional probes and input devices to perform operation, and I realized we got this vga/hdmi port to toy with. AFAIK, there is currently no laparoscope set offered with high-definition (WUXGA) resolution, so we just wait for the replacement while we connect external display to it. Surprisingly enough, we do feel that we can see better in hi-res monitor than we did in standard monitor, ergo, better outcome (we can easily avoid those fragile, innocent-looking-but-otherwise-richly-vascularized-tissues (read:it bleeds like no other).

Long story short, the high-resolution visual on operating field results in less operating time and better outcome (yet to be validated by statistical means). If this is really so, then a hi-res monitor (and camera) would be a great help to the field of laparoscopy/endoscopy operation.

We tried 24" Samsung (forget the details, but it was 1920x1080 capable) and already feel some improvement (despite its straining our eyes due to its glare), so I assume the better the resolution and gamut, the better our visual on operating field will be. I already talked to the guys in ophtalmology in this case, but apparently laparoscopy and output monitor are just beyond their field. The same with lap tech guys, they cant give suggestions yet.

I do the googling, but monitor datasheets just cant justify what we need. I don't mind attaching a laptop if I have to :D

I apologize if I posted in inappropriate thread. Just can't find other better than this one

Nope but it would fit the 1080p IPS. The cost is beyond ridiculous due to the fact that it's only available in limited supplies for HP and Dell - $1500+. If we find a better and cheaper source - will let you know.

Well, just read the review in my sig - HP8740w, the best laptop screen up to date. I can tell you one thing, - I hated HP for years but was looking for the best panel and when I saw that screen on a presentation - paid over 3k for the laptop and waited 3 months for HP to finally deliver it, just for that screen. Every person who's looked at it, experienced the wow effect. So I assume, you will notice the difference ;)

Dell UltraSharp U3011 30-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor or Dell UltraSharpTM U2711 27” Monitor with PremierColor both are matte (anti-glare) and highly recommendable for medical environments where quality of details can have crucial effects in decisions.

    Hey Aikimox!,

Would the 1200p IPS screen work on the R2? and I remember you had posted screen shots comparing an IPS to the RGBLED before, but I can't find the link.
Finally how many greenbacks do I have to give up for one. :D

Yes it would work in R2 if you're willing to remove the glass cover (Ask Speedy how to properly do it). As of today the only place to order those is from HP parts store and it costs....well 1500$. I had a source selling those for 750 each but it's no longer available :(

Yeh, I feel the same. I don't understand why people like these matte finishes. The clarity is trash, and the colors are not near as good as a glossy display.

Sure it can be used in brighter environments, but it doesen't come close to the quality of glossy screens.

It all depends on the AG layer quality and type. Remember, most screens behind the glass covers are actually matte and if they were grainy as you say, it would be amplified by the glass cover. Another good example is the semi glossy surface used in HP 8740w/8540w. You get no graininess and no reflections.

Here you go guys, the first M18x with no E2E glass! BTW, the stock screen has a strong anti glare element, but it's not matte. There's no graininess and yet it's crystal clear.

Also, I received the RGBLED screen but it's a no go, the connector is different :( Unless there's a way to modify the connectors, there's no chance to have the 112% RGBLED in the M18x.

Next thing on our list it making a custom bezel (easily removable) for the lid.

Hehe, that was some fun. Never thought I'd do this, lol. The glass is very fragile and I didn't manage to avoid cracking and scratching it.

I will make a custom plastic bezel without the glass anyway, I hate glossiness :)

My respect for you sir :notworthy: and i have an idea for the lid since is easy to work on aluminum you can get a piece of aluminum of the same thickness of the glass and cut it to make the bezel then paint it or cover it with vinyl

since I am a welder i find easy working with metals :)

Hehe, I thought it looked kind of cool.

Out of curiosity, you said the connector's didn't fit. Was the Alienware or the panel not using a 30 pin connector? Are there different standards of 30 pin connectors? I thought it was going to work when I saw the picture of the bezel off. :(

Yeah, the more it stays without the bezel, the more I like it that way. Thinking to do some post-nuclear style artwork on it.... ;)

M18x uses a smaller connector (also 30pin) than the one on the RGBLED panel. Probably either a new or just a different standard.
