Need more info on this. Can you describe step by step what you are doing?

I never got above 4.

I installed Nvidia system tools 6.02 ( link on this Thread) and ntune 5.05.54.00 after install I restarted ( just in case) and with my system on all defaults ( not overclacked yet) each time I ran any of those applications ( NST or Ntune) by double clicking their icons my laptop went to the blue screen of death. Nothing else to add, it simply hangs my machine each and everytime I try to use any of those apps. I uninstalled them both now and will install Nvidia System Tools 6.05 (latest release) to check if it helps in anyway. as soon as it ends downloading and I install/test I'll tell you about it. Thanks again Mandrake don't have a clue if I can rep being a noob on this site, but If I find a way ( if it's possible) then I'll rep you for your help
-
Nvidia system tools includes ntune. Do not do a separate install. Do you have your CPU OC'ed?
-
I had both installed, maybe some link somewhere else ( not this thread) mislead me to do so, don't remember. I uninstalled both and reinstalled the newer version and now it works
Thanks a lot for your help mandrake. Now I'll start over with the overclocking stuff, maybe I shall accept airplaneman's suggestion about testing in NST and then using those settings on bios, what do you think? I'll re read your thread about memory, and re read this thread before lowering the memory just to be sure I'm doing the 1:2 ratio right
-
You will be less stable using just NST over the bios. You cannot control your memory divisors within NST meaning you won't be able to achieve 1:2. 1:2 is not a written rule either. You can try other divisors to see what works best.
Start simple and change you fsb and mem to 1200 and that should get you to 2.55Ghz. -
I'll try just that tonight, thanks for the tip!
-
guys how can you use 3dmark? I tried using 3dmark vantage and it tells me the minimum resolution is not supported and stops. Since this screen is not 4:3 the resolutions differ from those supported by 3dmark, what am I missing?

if you got the 1440x900 screen you will need to run on an external monitor that can support 1280x1024
And mandrake I meant period, desktops too -
Sort of on topic but definitely not "noob", I bought the memory you did. I'm going to run tests with it and compare it to mine. I'm hoping the new memory will run cooler.

It is pretty sweet memory haha
Don is looking at it for when (if?!) he gets his M17x too lol -
I can sell whichever I don't keep to Don if he wants it. Something tells me they're the same product but who knows.
-
mmm, didn't think about that, thanks scook9 I'll check if some of my monitors support that res.

ok so I overclocked via BIOS to FSB 1350 and Memory 1333 (highest it'd go). Orthos proved stable for at least 10 minutes so I tried loading up a game - Sins of a Solar Empire. I'm playing a saved game with lots of units which makes the game very processor and memory intensive. After about 10 minutes, I'm getting a minidump.
Should I not overclock the RAM? I was under the impression that you're supposed to overclock both together? I tried throttling back the FSB to 1333 to match the RAM but still got the same problem... -
hey guys what are "ok" temps for the gpu? was playing around with NST to overclock the gpu and it does go faster on furmark I could get about 10 % increase in fps and stuff but temps started to increase and got pretty nervous so switched it back to defaults hehe. The default temp was average 84 degrees and after overclocking it reached 97 degrees and I stopped furmark. So what are safe temps for both the cpu and the gpu with default cooling system?
-
BTW I tested your suggestion mandrake 1200 for both ram and cpu via bios and it crashed everytime it tried to load the OS. SO gave NST a chance to test stable settings, and seems in NST I could get my FSB to 1200 without a problem (living memory settings alone) but seems like NST raises memory automatically, now instead of 1333 it is higher than that ( don´t remember the exact number) It´s weird it works on NST and not on bios :S haven´t had much spare time lately to keep testing, but the temps are a big concern right now for me.
-
I would just keep trying different setting but 1350 FSB is high. Your 1066 memory will suffer from some latencey issue about 1066 so I actually would test OC'ing with just the fsb and leave the memory alone. Set just your fsb to 1200 and see how it works.
I'm assuming that is in celsius which means it's too high. Try to keep the temps below 90. Obviously the cooler the better.
If it's actually working better in NST make your changes with out touching the memory in the bios. Set yours to 1200:1333. Keep testing and you'll find the best combo for your system. -
So I realized I swtiched the #'s LOL - 1333 was FSB; 1350 was RAM. I backed off to 1330 FSB and 1066 RAM and the game played fine. I'm going to try increasing the RAM to see how that does - or am I being stupid? Should I just pick up some 1333 mhz RAM and call it a day?
-
Is it normal for the computer to crash (white stuttering screen) then stabilize after pressing the power button a few times when OCing? It goes blank then when I press the power button again goes back to windows login, which I can then proceed normally.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
sounds like it failed to boot and restarted with safe settings
-
But when I check the NVidia control panel, its still overclocked the same. I've just ran the stress test, and it said it was stable too... hmmm.
-
Does CPU-z actually show that you are still overclocked too.
-
Yes, exactly the same.
Oh btw, I overclocked from the bios not the nvidia control panel. -
If you do this is the memory to buy. LINK
-
Looks good! I was hoping to go 8gigs though
-
Latency is higher on the 4GB modules I've seen. I don't know if they make any decent ones yet.

Guess who that one review is
-
Yeah I recognized it immediately.
-
I have the P8600 in my M17x and I bought the Kingston CAS 7 1333Mhz HyperX 4 gigs. I am looking to OC the CPU to 2.8. I plan on doing this through the BIOS. Can someone here give me the EXACT settings I need to set it at to achieve this? I am a serious OC noob and I don't want to break something lol
-
didn't like my answer the last time you asked?
-
I should have known it was you by the laptop you have in your sig haha. No, I just didn't understand the ratio parts you mentioned... but I went back and re-read it so i 'think' i understand...
-
When you get the system I can help you do it step by step if you wish. The "other" location is a little less crowded so it might be easier over there.
-
You got it sir! I post my review and pics here and "there" then you can hold my hand through the process. I get nervous fidgeting with new toys
-
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
so did i but once you get the hang of this its no stopping you
-
Everything I've said will make much more sense when you actually have the system in front of you and see the options in the bios.
-
Occasionally, I get a white stuttering screen after logging in at start up. But, all I have to do is put it to sleep and wake it up and it works fine. OCCT says it's (the processor) stable every time I test it, and the temps are also fine. So is there a reason it only crashes at start up (sometimes)?
-
Hmm, that is weird. How high are you OCing it to?
-
I set it at 1275 fsb (Q9000).
-
That OC should be fine. Run OCCT against your GPUs.
-
I haven't OCd my GPUs though. Or does it not matter?
-
Wouldn't hurt to test it. Does it still happen when the CPU is not OC'ed?
-
Hmm, I'll check on it. Thanks.
-
Hello and thanks for all the great info
I have some questions and I am quite new to all this stuff. Ok so im wanting to overclock my desktop and my new laptop but the ATI Tool when stress testing only tests one card. So what good is that if u r running SLI? My CPU on my desktop is already overclocked from when me n my buddy built it. But I would like to do all my own stuff now.
Here r the specs for my desktop
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 6134MB RAM
Hard Drive: 3 1TB Hard Drives 2 set up in RAID
Video Card: 2 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 SLI
Monitor: HP w2408 Wide LCD Monitor
Sound Card: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Speakers/Headphones: Bose Speakers/Razer Carcharias Headset
Keyboard: Razer Lycosa/Razer n52te
Mouse: Razer Mamba
Mouse Surface: Razer Excact Mat N Wrist Rest
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1 (6001.vistasp1_gdr.090302-1506)
Motherboard: ASUS P6T
Computer Case: NZXT Tempest All New Fans NZXT Sentry LX Fan Controller -
OCCT will stress test both cards.

FurMark also works well
-
Ok so I downloaded OCCT and I wanna start overclocking my GPUs on my M17x. So I will follow the instructions at the beginning of this thread but how do I tell if it fails with OCCT. Also should I overclock the CPU first. Sorry for being a noob but thanks for the help
Also when I'm not gaming I see that the GPUs r downclocked I guess you would say. When I overclock them will they still do that when not gaming. Also what have people been able to overclock the GTX 280s to? Thank u!
-
It will quack at you when it fails
Doesn't matter which u oc first -
Thanks Mandrake! What r people getting out of the 280s and the T9600? Also what settings do I want on OCCT when stress testing my CPU?
-
Don't have the 280's only the 260's but I was able to overclock my T9600 to 3.4 stable, backed it down to 3.3 though as things run smoother at that setting.
-
Ok Im using the NVIDIA thing not BIOS so what do I turn the FSB up to? Thats all I can turn up right?
How to Overclock ( noob edition )
