Those errors your getting are a nightmare. I had them a few times. They are directly related to ATI and I spent hours once trying to get rid of it to no avail. Deleted every registry entry and still no joy. Only way I sorted it was a clean install and then all was good.

The MoM implementation errors are down to the CCC, try completely cleaning it off, installing all the .net updates etc and trying again :)

Just putting the device id's in another driver is a nice idea but after trying that for 3 days I have yet to see anyone get it working on a standard ATI driver. After looking at a few tutorials on the net it seems there is more to add to the inf than just the driver id itself. Good look to anyone trying.

yeah Im with quadzilla....Maximus is just stressing himself out....he should chill and enjoy his new PC until Alex points him in the right direction of some good drivers.
Let the tech guys do the driver stuff Maximus! we just wait for the results.

These guys are better at pulling their hair out.

    Maximus.
Mobility Modder has just been updated to include support for the 4 series cards; these typically don't rely on disabling driver integrity checks, like the DNA sets, and work by simply updating and recompiling some of the install information so that the drivers can be installed in the normal manner with no hassle.
I wont have time til tomorrow or late this evening to do any driver/performance comparisons or any tweaking around to see if I can get a modified 'raw' driver intalling; but I'd suggest you give MM a go, just make sure you mod with UAC off as it affects the modding process. :)

Wel just used the new mod modder and it works a treat. Now have 9.7 installed with my 4850's and all is running so sweet. Only funny thing I have encountered recently is when I open GPU-Z about 3 out of 4 times the laptop just locks up. Only a minor issue but very strange

Are you finding them any better than the DNAs?
If they are I may not have to bother doing a driver comparison, and just go straight to MM'd desktop Cats :D

GPU-Z could be crashing because its trying to access the driver/hardware details. Try giving it admin access and disabling UAC, and see if that makes a difference.

Might also just not like 9.7/W7 hehe

Always have UAC disabled on fresh install. Everest is doing it now. I think I know the problem. When fitting the cards the other day the little holder on the motherboard that you fasten the screws into for the northbridge came off so dont think the heatsink is fully down on it.

    Wow yay! :)

    Quick question,

Do I download the Vista 64 Home 4850 drivers w/ catalyst package? or just the standalone driver pack? Doesn't say in the instructions on driverheaven

    Thanks!

Things much better for you now than those lovely 'maybe I will maybe I wont' stock drivers?

All you need to do with Mobility Modder (unless theres a driver style change etc) is grab the driver, open as though you were going to run it on a desktop pc, then point the modder towards the extracted drivers. Nice and easy :)

Maximus, you went from an E1505 to your M17? I think the maximum upgrade for that thing was an ATI X1400! Anyway, congratulations on getting the beast working. Looking forward to some benchmarks, and finding out what I'm in store for when I get my 4850s. BTW, are they available to 3870 owners yet?

Congrats on the machine, Maximus. It's great to hear your enthusiasm for it. Alienware should send you a gift card or something because it helped seal the deal with me. :)

By any chance, have you been able to record any temperature readings on the 4850's while gaming?

Jason, make sure you mobility mod the latest drivers; improvements for real games across the board in them :)
Sounds like the extra CPU grunt and W7 when it comes out will do them some good too.

It's a great laptop and stands equal to my full size, quad, bloody noisy gaming desktop which Im intending to sell.
    Good system!

Thanks. Yup, I've bookmarked this thread for future use. I appreciate all the work you guys have done to get these 4850's cranking. If we're still lacking benchmarks with the X9100 by the time my unit comes in, I'll be glad to contribute to the efforts.

I just dont want him to actually get them, and be dissapointed because of an exceedingly minor 3dmark 06 boost; when the real strength of the 4 series are in game and also AA usage

And at this time generally means about 9001 years from now / never. Anywhere else that would sell the 4850m's?

Can anyone tell me how to change the CPU on the M17? I've never done this before and would like to know how to upgrade the CPU in the future? Aside from putting in the CPU is there anything else that I would need to change on the system or do you just drop it in? Thanks guys.

you clearly made no effort at finding this information....there is a guide in the stickied M17 general information thread.....

edit: well I feel like a jerk now....there isn't a guide there....go to the OCZ website, go to the DIY notebook 17" Intel Crossfire edition page, look at the owner manual, it details how to install a CPU, the reverse will be the process for removing one

    here is link:
