    That's really good news.

If a bios fixes the stuttering then it must be voltage related. Hmmmmmm.

Nice job on brining it to our attention Caskey! +rep

Here is the info from the My Hive page:

    M17 Bios B13
This BIOS image update is presented in a Nero format, and may be used to create a bootable CD-ROM with all the necessary files to flash your BIOS. Apply this update ONLY if you are experiencing problems with your system.

Before you run the BIOS update:

    * Make sure that your computer has the battery and the AC-Adapter connected
    * Disconnect any third party peripherals connected to the computer
    * Do NOT turn the computer off during the BIOS update
    * Do NOT restart the computer during the BIOS update
    * Do NOT eject the CD-ROM from the drive during the BIOS update

CAUTION: Improperly updating or flashing the BIOS CMOS chip on a motherboard can damage it to the point of rendering it useless. Accordingly, you should perform this BIOS update only with the assistance of an Alienware technical support agent. Performing this BIOS update without such assistance will void your system's warranty.

Sounds like it, they must have reduced the voltage to reduce the heat rather then fix the fail cooling which would be pretty expensive in the long run.

I like this peice of BS "Accordingly, you should perform this BIOS update only with the assistance of an Alienware technical support agent. Performing this BIOS update without such assistance will void your system's warranty."

Nice how alienware treats that eh?

Either that or it's a voltage increase. Both situations can cause stuttering.

Most of the time overheating results in a bsod or a "fatal exception", or a total shut down.

I think it's fair of Alienware to make that statement. A lot of people don't know what they are doing and could end up with a brick if done incorrectly. Then, the first place they would come would be here to rant about how much A.W. sucks. At least this way, a tech support agent will walk them through the process. If something goes wrong, then it's gonna be covered. Sounds fair to me.

See if CPU Genie shows the higher multipliers of the X series. I know it supports lower values not supported by the bios not sure about higher then standard on the X series.

Disabling the stock and enabling a higher would essentially multiplier overclock the cpu.

I think it's really unfortunate for a lot of us but I doubt A.W. will ever release a bios to allow overclocking the Xtreme CPU's like mine.

My X9100 runs very well at almost 3.6Ghz using Setfsb, but I also monitor the temps to ensure nothing is getting too hot.

I also don't overclock very often either, just the occasional benchmark.

Yeah, it's stable and doesn't get too hot to about 3.57Ghz. In fact, it never gets too hot. Anything past 3.57 and my puter shuts down. If you read the technical papers on the X9100, it's got a designed maximum OC of 4.06Ghz. I'm sure I'll never see that in my rig though.

I am using the stock A.W. bios but use Setfsb to overclock. This doesn't just OC the CPU, it OC's the whole FSB.

EDIT:For me it's not worth flashing to the OCZ .28 bios cause I'm not really hardcore about OC'ing.

so no one has this bios yet?. i will like to try it out myself to see what's up.

i am going to try cpu genie and see what i can do. when i unlock it, it shows me alot more voltage but i never played with it long enough. sadly my rig will be gone in a week so i can only give suggestions to someone that will listen and see if it works.

rob41 can you look in the last page of project freeze.

If Alienware got a new bios shouldnt that mean that ocz and asi and the others should also get it from flex? And perhaps someone will have multiplier control..
An ocz .029 would be nice :D
Or am i wrong and flex isnt responsible for this?
Btw. i got a reply from asi mobile.. they said the will ask the odm (flex) about this for us.

how can you still expect OCZ to develop a new bios for a laptop they do not produce and make no money from ?

ASI is who you need to look to not OCZ.... come one people i understand wishful thinking but still

    what mr moo. come on.

my first laptop was a acer 3860 or 3680 on of them. and before i got on this website it i had a problem where i bluescreened and i lost so much data. i called acer everyday for about 3 months getting pissed. until i fiqured it was the hdd. so i purchased another hdd and it was solved. and they wanted me to send in the whole system when i told them that i took it out and i am looking at the hdd. they said no and they have to have the whole system in there hand.

so i am not going to an acer or recommending them to any one.

do not get a w90, my friend last term in college got one and hated it. Too big and it could not handle a qx9300 ES he bought. Very unstable and bad temps. the 4870's in the w90 are no big deal either

lol exactly. plus if the m17 gets the 4870's it will be a much better laptop than the w90...i think it currently is even with the 3870's. No reason to downgrade to one. Plus Asus isnt too supportive of upgrades, especially their horrible factory bios that comes with them

maybe in high resolutions but that wont affect 1440x900 like me, the only reason they may beat us at 1920x1200 is because they have 1GB of gpu memory, and thats probaby not in many games. The only ones that use that much texturing is crysis(sucks on ati anyways), and MMORPG's such as age of conan

When you bluescreen and you see the memory dump message.. you went too high or upped it too fast :D
Just try it small steps at a time.. if you bluescreen youll know how high you can go.. take a look at E-wreckeds oc guide.. its written great ;)

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=384955

I downloaded it from My Hive and uploaded it to Megaupload myself! If you're not comfortable with that then you'll have to find it somewhere else. I put it there for folks like you that don't have it in My Hive yet.

    Norton?

Man, if you're still under warranty, I'd say use what you paid for, it's free.

If the rare event occured and something got screwed up while doing it then you're covered.

If it turns into a brick and you didn't call them then it's on you. Ouch!

It only takes a few minutes on the phone anyway.

    Good luck and have fun!

EDIT: I'm sure there are a lot of dangerous files there like any file sharing website. I only download files from there when someone I know is giving me a file.

Maybe results were posted in another thread but what ended up happening here? Does the new BIOS fix the shuttering on Quads or no? (not you Halo, your machine likes things the hard way)

Now if the BIOS would also fix the sleep issue for Duo's would be awesome.
