According to what I read, the core speeds were the same. They probably are different though, but not by much.

EDIT: Scratch that, I read wrong :p but yea, should be easily overclockable by 50MHz, should temps allow.

You can (have a 4870 as mater, and a 4850 as slave), but you won't have a performance advantage over two 4850s in crossfire because the bandwidth of both cards would be limited by the slower card and the master card would perform slower to accommodate it.

can the new M17x support crossfire? because SLI doesn't need any cable between the cards.

i have to say i am so happy we have finally got to the bottom of this, i would happily pay for the 4850 upgrade and clock if possible on my m17 and pick up a cheap q9300 in the future then buy a whole new laptop for 3x that

It will be interesting to see how much a new machine will cost with the 4850's compared to the M17x.

it wont give the same performance as the 2x 280's i dont think but it will certainly be competitive i would have thought

therefore i would pitch it prob £300-400 cheaper in comparison

Yeah the deal will be the best for current owners more so then i think future buyers , unless of course you just love ATI then its a great option, after all there is the Hardcore ATI crowd and vice versa.

I had the W90 and it was very fast but its no way going to be as fast as 2x280's like you said but i knew that all along , plus the nicer thing about these cards over the W90 ones is there 1gb vs 512 which was something i hated about the W90 ones.

Oh sweet, if they put the cards up on the dell store, I'm in business. Now I do hope they release the 1 GB DDR3 4870, because I'd love to take on of those instead.

I don't understand... Why they would offer the 4850's for upgrade, but not on the cutomization page of the M17?

I'm talking about what the Dell Regional Sales Manager told zfactor, that there is a single 4870 option, that they may or may not release. That isn't coming from some clueless phone tech.

Ok wow! I WAS WRONG, WOO HOO I WAS WRONG!

4850's are confirmed in a sense, Pmanuk you should revise your original statement as it might be different in the US and UK

Form talking to two tech rep's they have told me (btw I will call sales later to see if they have different information) they are now only TESTING, that means they are just seeing if the system will work, so it is a possibility the system will not work, or if it does take a couple of months or longer.

BUT, I have a good idea that they would not have taken the time to even test the 4850's if they didn't think it wasn't possible.

So horray for confusing news! lol

See it must be different in the UK then the US, because right now I was told they are in testing, and they are not selling anything. Also I got no pricing, I will try sales to see if the result is different.

Im on hold for a sales agent atm.

    Gotta love AW roundabout

Call AW tech "well we are testing but sales will know more about that"

call AW sales "well we don't know much about that let me send you to tech support"

    ARGH!

My AW tech guy Leo is talking to his level 2 guys, to see what he can find out.

Ok, so more info on the U.S side:

    1) If it works, it will be available in a month

    2) No stock in the U.S atm (not sure about other places)

    3) US pricing around 250 USD

    Good news today yep :)

    this is great

its like one big easter egg hunt

will they, wont they, what are they..... pmsl

but we getting closer, i think a/w should read nbr just for a laugh as to see what we think we know what their doing.

4850s will still give m17 a punch to be proud of though.

and at least aw have confirmed from different sources that 4850s are a go even if the 4870s are not.

4850's are confirmed, although in testing, but they wouldn't spend the time if it wasn't possible.

If it does come true though, the M17 could end up being the most popular gaming notebook on the market, with the lowered price. It would be cheaper then the ASUS W90, and smaller, plus you get the AW brand.

Hopefully it works out for them, it would definitely put them back on top.

this is somewhat correct the person i spoke with also said these are not for sale yet in the us for whatever reason. i told him someone here placed the actual order and he was a bit suprised because he said the lead time was still a few weeks out from what the response he got back on them was. but for whatever reason he said if the uk is already taking orders he is pretty sure they will be out there first. but they will for sure come to the us if the uk gets them.

but yes overall lead time he said should be around 3-5 weeks give or take..
