Agreed, I am upgrading to these as well. Just ordered my T9900, threw in 4gb of ram, then the video cards whenever someone gets them as the test bed :). I am tempted to grab the bluray drive as well.

Nvidia and ATI's pricewar during the Radeon 4000/GTX 200 left a lot of fallout between the two companies, but one of the biggest benefits is drastically reduced costs of graphics cards all around. A year ago, dual SLI 280s on this m17X would have been a $1,200 upgrade gauranteed.

Plus, I think the companies are starting to realize if they drop the costs on mobile devices they'll raise adoption. A high end gaming laptop can be had for under $2,500 now. They've come down a lot.

I remember my "high end" m7700, fully decked out (2GB of RAM, 6800 Ultra Go, 3.2Ghz P4) cost close to $5K.

Q9100? You might as well get a Q9200 instead. They're both going for $299 on eBay, so the 2.4Ghz is naturally the better choice.

Think I'll have to upgrade mine as well. I got 14404 in 06 so I wonder what I'll get with the new cards

You'll probably get around the same score in 06. You'll see an improvement in Vantage however.

yea these are the same cards from the Asus w90p and we score 17k and they score 17k but in gaming you can see a 40-50% increase

    overclocking and tweaking.

thats what the Asus has gotten when they flashed their cards and ran with a overclock on there computer. We should beat them in gaming and benchmarking due to the Bios OC they are stuck at a lower overclock for now

Actually the Asus has a HUGE advantage over the M17 due to that X38 chipset in terms of overclocking the CPU. However, there is a rumor that the P45 chipset scales crossfire a bit better than the X38. But we wouldn't know how two 4850s would perform in the W840, but it should be up there nonetheless.

well the 4850's we are getting are the exact same cards as are in the asus so should be very similar

Actually the qx9100 is a dual core at 3.06; I'd rather stick with dual core since more games use them and quad is pretty expensive

Its just the x9100, the q implies quad core intel.

yea the q9100 is like a 2.26ghz quad core and cost almost as much as the qx9300, no point to get it really.

I wouldn't call it exact; maybe the core may be the same. Apparently these 4850s have 1gb per card, but use the 4850 BIOS. It seems that the 4850's bios has a lower voltage setting than the 4870 BIOS, which may explain the differences in OC potential between the MSI GT725 and a single 4870 from the Asus W90.

I am interested in knowing how different this card is from real HD4870 in terms or heating issues and whatnot. I don't really believe you can't put HD4870 mobility cards into M17... MXM compatibility, as long as you get MXM Type III then I don't see any reason not to be able to use it, except M17 doesn't have any BIOS update for supporting HD4870 mobility.

As moo said the problem is the m17 has 2 different mxm slots and as far as we know they have had problems with compatibility getting them to work with 2 different slots

re the bios update, from what we know there is no need for a bios update but that is speculation at the moment

The biggest problem widely known is the heat issue with the 4870's which is why they have said the 4850's will be available which for intents and purposes are the same bar a few mhz in clocks (which it is possible might be able to be made up in overclocking -- again speculation tho)

Finally been able to get online, I am currently in Ireland on vacation, and have had many sleepless nights wondering if the upgrades have any more information (IE did they work). lol :).

Seriously though, how did this thread die? Someone contact AW and see if the upgrades worked or not, thats what I was told was the reason stopping them from being released.
