The best thermal paste is Liquid Metal but you have to make sure the thermal paste won't be in contact with aluminium, it literally melts in a few seconds.
-
by the way does any non scratch and non lint cloth work to clean the old thermal off? I plan on using the Artic cleaners to do so. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
I personaly like ICD 7, less of a hassle too, non conductive, not aluminum erroding lol and easy to apply

ICD7 > Liquid Metal.
Diamond actually transfers heat better than metal.
I used the liquid metal pads in my C90S, it worked really well, and fool proof install but it an only be used in area like the core, as it is conductive you cant have it near solder nodes on the chips.
Also removing the liquid metal stuff is the worst, It wont even let you take your heatsink off unless you heat it up first. -

well no i'm staying with my unit I made the choice because of price performance ratio. I just bought another card so I am going to sli it.i 'm not gonna sell and buy for a 20 percent max performance increase. I checked my vantage scores with johnksss(9800m gtx 57??) and anothergeek(280m 61??) and I a 55?? right now but I know I can push higher(drivers and a lot more tweaks.).
I just want to know where all the notebooks stand so for what I a seeing if m17x and the np9850 is a tie, then the w90 is second and the np9262 is in third followed by the whitebook and then the qosmio. then if m17x 1st gen and the m1730 is a tie.(not included because it doesn't support quads and even though I know for gaming it will beat the toshiba and the whitebook.)
I am looking for cooling, performance, design, and negative. honestly you can judge the cooling with the gpu's by my notebook since it uses the cooling same for the gpu's. the cpu is diffeerent since mines has two fans for the cpu, NB, SB, ram, and some other little things I see. I am going to clear everything up and see what's good.
I am thinking when I have some more money I will swap out my ram with lower timings and heatsinks, and the rest will be determined.
should I use as5 or mx-2 on my cpu???? -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
MX-2, OCZ freeze or my personal favorite ICD 7
If you went ahead and talked to IC Diamond on the ICD7 page, he might even hook you up with a free tube... he did for me! -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
thanks all for the replies I didn't know as I was writing a paragraph on my thoughts. lol.
can you please please please take pictures of your notebook opened and striped. I am dying to know how alienware went about this and I want to see the method of how they used to cool it.
my np9262 is veey advanced and it doesn't seem like one person was in charge of the cooling department. the whitebook is a different story but I have to admit that one fan is serious for cooling two gpu's. but there was lots of ways to improve it.
in project freeze we got it down to 6-15 degrees on the gpu's. but the cpu was harder since there wasn't to much room under the hood for improvement.
I dn't like the liquid business seeing as I have pull apart the cover and then just unscrew everything, to run occt for an hour shut off my notebook, and then rip stuff apart before it cools. I like the icd7 thing though.
it's between the ocz freeze(i think that's mx-2) and the icd7 -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
No MX-2 is similiar to ICD 7 in viscosity and application and is a great silver based paste... OCZ freeze is like AS5 with none of the excessive curing times... and you should still check for your free tube of ICD 7 on the thread!

check out this dude's m17x running crysis all on very high @1920 x 1200

runing a 3dmark06 test is no better than posting your cpu & overclock.
Infact I could make you a chart basically that tells you what 3dmark06 score you get with what cpu speed.
So if you would rather see a 3.2ghz cpu represented as 17,000 3dmark06 instead of 3.2ghz then be my guest.
the video card is not comming into play its all cpu and thats why its a pointless benchmark, You can UNDER clock your gpu and still get the same score. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Wow fail... due to the drivers probably.... or well he's using fraps lol... and he has fraps on less than 30 fps... he has video lag or... there's alot of things!
-

Agreed, everything these days seem to sit on CPU, i would have got a w90 if i had the money, even a lower m17x i could build up (getting hold of sagers at decent prices here is just too hard) But the laptop i use now with the configuration buz' through todays games etc, its got processing power and it handles crysis on very high at around 30fps, because it doesnt have much more pixels to render
.
Sure i loose space for more then say 1 browser on screen, but the ballance of q9000 and 4850 is great with lower res, i would easily have taken the lower end alienware model
What are your clocks mandrake? -
Just ran 3dmark06 (sorry vicious I was asked to run it)
Score was 14555. This may be a really bad question but under my GPU its says geforce GTX 170m. Just curious why it says that when it clearly is not that GPU. -
I've been running my core clock at 680. For the other specs I would need to double check. I'm not at home and I don't remember off the top of my head. -
-
No idea which driver I am using. So that's not a great score, but not bad IMO.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
my score is 10500 stock and 12,500 gpu overclocked.
-
Nvidia cards don't play the 3dmark 06 game they hate it
it says 170m because it does ...most people think that Nvidia was going to call it that but they changed it to try to sell more....170< 260 they wanted to make it look more powerful -
well don, my cpu is overclocked at 3.3Ghz right now. So that plays a large factor i assume. I have yet to OC my gpu. I assume that would increase my score also?
Btw what reso should i be playing it at, i just did it at the reso it gave it at 1280by 1024. Almst 15k for nvidia isnt that bad, for my cards, in my mind. What is the highest any m17x user has got so far? -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Just over 16k I believe...
-
16 954
and clauss GPU overclock will help but not much... -
-
Bah... and the w90 has got 18ksih? damn ATi benchmarking cards...
k will run now -
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/6194/3dmark16360.jpg
sorry 16,3 not 16,9 -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Lol Benches mean nothing... well not alot... ATI do really well in benches...
3d Mark just doesn't like Nvidia -
Wait moo..what system are you running right now? you got your m17x?!
btw just ran very high 1900 by 1200, got like 17fps. But that was on 32 bit, ill do it on 64 bit..whoops
never mind moo..that was the best so far..mah bad -
Benchmarks are worthless
Just like liquid nitrogen cooling and dry ice etc...proving that your system can achive high numbers for 5 minutes is pointless -
-
About 17 fps with very high, no AA and native resolution. there you go exj2
-
EDIT, his scores are for 3dmark 16.3k and vantage i believe was 11850 or so for the GPU
i did hit 16,443 in 3dmark06 but that was with a unstable overclock, comp bsod'd right when i was trying to take a screenshot -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
Clauss can you run a bench at a more reasonable Res at least for crysis lol... I want to see what res I can get ~40 fps on
-
I play crysis on 1900 by 1200 cause it just looks the best. but what would you like it on. I will try it all on high right now to see how much higher it is.
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
well lol considering I can immensily enjoy playing crysis on my 1024x768 screen... Desktop 8800 GT OC very high 30 fps... so unless it looks really bad at the 1200x maybe 1650x
-
-
Ok well i just ran it on high. About 30 fps with 1900 by 1200 resolution. So which exact res and graphic config you want. SO I don't mess it up or give you skewed results
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
ex2j also remember we haven't figured out all the driver issues and such... you will see much improved scores soon... we don't even know if SLI is working correctly at this point! lol
Clauss let's try it at the 1650 settings -
k will do...wait SLI has issues...mine is working..righT? say yes
there is no 1650 resolution..1680 or 1600 -
SLI is working fine i unno what butters is talking about because we wouldn't be seeing 11.5k in vatage if it didn't
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
lol either one... then maybe the 1200 res too... and as for SLI yess it's working but probably not at full capacity... or quite right
-
Ok will do 1680 then 1600 then 1200
on 1680 reso=3.3 FPS but it was above 37 the entire time..makes no sense. -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
haha well thank you much... that's deserving of + rep
Ahhh I have to spread rep around before giving more 2 u -
1600=32.73. Odd it was less...Ok there is no 1200..there are multiple 1280s and an 1152. pick butterbiscuit man!
-
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
highest 1280... 16:10 what are the options?
-
What would be best is if you're running the same Dox 186.42 version Mandrake and Kcissem are and then test the same game benchmark settings with stock GPU clocks. -
Well, i reinstalled vista twice so I guess I am using the drivers that were on the resource CD.
Also butters, options are 1280- (1024,960, or 720) -
MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
1280X1024 10 char
-
For resolutions run Vantage and '06 at 1280x1024 and all games at 1920x1080 to compare them directly with the W90.
