CPU was locked down both times when I first installed it and again when I re-seated it.

I also do the same thing, screw the heatsink back on and then attach the power button and boot up to save myself hassle of putting it back together completely then taking it apart completely.

Yes getting into the bios just takes FOREVER.

Edit: Just set your multi to 10, fsb to 1280, mem to 1280 and see if it works. If it does, congrats! 3.2Ghz.

Mandrake how did you manage this score on benchmark 06?
    1)overclocked qx9300 to 3.2ghz?
2)what about the gpus? what settings did you have for them?
    3) and did you disabled the intergrated graphics first?

Just try the cpu settings first:
The gpu settings are much trickier but if you can't get the CPU to at least 3.2Ghz you won't get close.

Edit: My CPU was at 3.3Ghz for my high in 06.
Edit2: For the settings in the benchmark it was all default.

ok i will try the cpu. just tell me the gpu settings please.

however reducing the memory speed is not my choice. i wanted the best possible ram speed thats why i bought the 1333mhz ones. i think its even more important than changing the memory speed to raise the cpu speed from 3.07 to 3.2

Keeping the memory divider 1:2 is key. I cannot stress that enough (someone back me up here). The extra bandwidth is useless since the fsb for the CPU is running much much much slower.

For GPU try 630|1025|1575...I know I hit at least 17.3K with this...but my CPU was at 3.3Ghz.

Edit: I ran OCCT for 20 minutes against my proc at those settings and it didn't fail, I just stopped it.

That ram speed is not helping you at all Aristotelhs2060 so listen to exactly what Drake is telling you to achieve the best overall system stability and performance. This guy knows the M17x better then anyone here so best to follow his directs to the T.

I actually keep mine at 10/1300/1300 but I'm guessing that setting won't work for eveyone.

ok, I got 10x 1280/1280, running OCCT now.

I ran the ram at 1280 with the q9000 without a hitch, never stressed though, lets see what happens!

edit: and this is with the OEM qx9300 btw

But then your timings will be off. I tried it with my 1066 HyperX memory and it worked but I didn't try OCCT with it.

so 20 minutes on OCCT enough to call it stable? a whole hour is a long time :(

Also, GPU 1 (I assume the northbridge/integrated graphics) is getting up to mid 80's so far....well CPU is max at 71. I assume this is due to FSB stress?

I am not going to bother with that expensive kingston ram, will get the G.Skill 4 GB 1333 kit, is what I had on my whitebook too. Good stuff

Shame all the 1333 is cas 9 though

yes on both counts. If you have any issues with games you can test it longer. 20 minutes on OCCT obviously will mean you can run any benchmark.

one question if i set multi to 10 in bios i get 2.6ghz not 3.2. i have to set it at 11.5 for the 3.07ghz.

anyway i tried multi 10 , fsb at 1280 and mem to 1280 and the m17x started but then i got a blue screen. then i set everything to default and the bootmng.ini couldnt be found. i had to make a startup repair.

    That's because 266x10 is 2.66. FSB must be at 1200 (320x10) for 3.2Ghz.

That sucks on the second part. Back to people calling me lucky. :(

It's still possible your BSOD is from a hard drive issue.

trying 3.1 now..... (10x 1240/1240) and I turned off the 9400m to allow as much headroom on the Northbridge/fsb as possible (hopefully)

I notice that this time the cpu % is 99+ whole time, on that first run it was jumping all around between mid 70's to low 90's

I am thinking that the trick to this will be too stress the northbridge/fsb as little as possible, that will be done by keeping the multi as high as possible.

I expect once I got some 1333 ram, I could probably run FSB around 1300 fine (I just always feel like it is the ram limiting my OC and not the CPU) and tweak multi to get stable then

mine is off now, no need to have it on, little memory hog it is, and just heats the FSB up more unnecessarily

i think i will stay with the 3.07ghz cpu. these tricks are not for me. at least i know my machine could reach the mandrake score as we have the same specs.

i dont have the os on the hard drive but on the ssd of course.

anyone else noticed that all apps load in 3 seconds and then it needs 30seconds to load the bluetooth icon on the taskbar? only the bluetooth. any ideas for this?
