so then dual 4870 is still faster then one 5870. for us dual carders not worthy yet![]()
-
Yes, for most things the dual 4870's will be better.
However, if a game doesn't scale properly with CF or SLI then the single 5870 will be king. -
otherwise i would have bought a m15x.
-
I always prefer a single card solution over a dual card when possible.
And I highly doubt the M11x is getting the 5870. lol -
5870 in a M11x, wouldn't that be nice.
-
hehehe rumourville...
noting else to do then wait for dell to provide dual 5870 cards. -
I know, right?!?
I have sent engadget tips when something is available that isn't known (I was the first person here to use the configurator on the M17x - not sure if you remember but I used a e-value code from the catalog that was sent before the system was available but it worked).
Anyway, I sent them that and they didn't post crap.
They would rather post rumors about a refresh in hardware, which is like not hard to guess really. -
i bet they release the m15x with 5870 first. I havent heard of a 5870x2 and ATI/AMD does not have a 5870x2 mobility listed.... do you guys think it will even be offered this year?

I was told today around Dec for 5870 SLI by a Dell rep, the guys over at Blackhawk say very soon. Has any one noticed on the Dell EPP site the i7 button does not work to configure a M17X, the rep told me that you will not be able to buy M17X's on EPP any more????????

Man, this whole 5870 upgrade is really dragging for AW. I know that the 4870 is still fast and amazing card but no matter how you look at things, the gpu is already a year and a half old. In computers world, that's an eternity. What's also funny is the fact that M17x is advertised as a "gaming" laptop but ironically the part that always gets upgraded last is the part that matters most in gaming i.e. the gpu. Nevertheless, it's still one of the best gaming laptops out there so that's why I'm waiting to see what will happen before I pull the trigger
-
-
thats crazy, how can they not offer EPP anymore?! And yes they are dragging feet... clevo based systems have them already! i really want an AW m17x but if they dont have 5870's by Aug im going with the asus g73jh-a1
-
I would not sell my 4870's EVER! They are great for gaming and benchmarking
-
It doesn't make sense if they remove the best laptop from their EPP offer. Usually when you go to configure something on the EPP site, they offer more powerful configurations. -
I check every morning if the 5870's have hit overnight, this morning when I saw that the configure button was not working and saying check back later my heart fluttered and my hand was reaching for the credit card as I thought the 5870's were going to drop any minute, I was wrong, RATS!!!!! And no, I don't think Dell is "not" going to sell the M17X on EPP, why would they not???

If something were to change it would be to the home site first. I bet the M17x i7 works again on EPP by tomorrow. If it really is gone everyone should try to call to get the discount. If the rep says no then try a different rep.
-
i wonder what changes there making

We will see how smart if the 5800s come out 21 days after I get my system

There is an EPP promotion until the 18th for Boeing employees. 21% off instead of 16%. My guess is this is the reason.

I just spoke to an alienware tech support guy and asked him about the new cards. He provided some interesting info:
M15x will be receiving NVIDIA 400 series card, too bad I knew nothing about them so I did not ask which one, but I guess GTX 480 or 470. He said the card is not yet released for laptops but it will be. Furthermore, he said that he has no info about the plans to put 5870 in the M15x.
M17x will be receiving both NVIDIA 400 series and 5870s!
He said that the info he has is usually for 3 months in advance, so the ETA for the cards can be anytime from tomorrow to summer. -
Ahhhhh mannn....if that info is true then i'm in for a long wait....i wanted a 5870 too in the M15x
hmmmff -
-
Well I'm just pointing out that according to the rep M15x will recieve NVIDIA instead of ATI, while M17x will get both options.
-
I'm still ticked about no Alienware EPP, they dumped 2 computers I had in my basket from EPP as well. Boeing gets 21%, I serve in the AF for 27+ years and get nothing.

I understood that he just has a list of future updates which is constantly updated. He clearly did not know when the info about the new cards was added since he does not usually check it.

Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
Didn't they update the bios on the M15x to support 5870's? Why would they do that if they are putting 400 series cards in it?
-
Well, you know about these Dell/Alienware "sources"...can't be trusted.
-

I'll bet $20 that 5870m will come to the M15x. -
i hope the m17x gets dx11 cards soon, preferably nvidia, but 5870 will do as well
-
If the m17x gets the 480 first I would jump on it even though I think I'd rather have ati cards
-
-
First; It costs DELL AW time=money to write a BIOS. So this will probably be a well thought over marketing strategy to prepare the machine for latest tech.
Second; I haven't seen any high end mobility GPU movement in the NVIDIA camp (no news of a competative 480 card). The only news I heard where some 6 cards which were presented behind closed doors in Germany last month.
So my guess is that your REP (just like mine) has a big thumb, out if which a lot of speculations are sucked. -
-
1. There might some issue with crossfire solution with the 5870's (No one has crossfire 5870's yet)
2. There is no competition and the 4870's are top of the line. Why compete with yourself??? It's not cost effective.
3. There won't be any major release of new technology for laptops until early/mid 2011 besides the Fermi based GPU and the 5870's crossfire. Might as well take time to implement them so you are not left for 6 months without anything new. -
Allthough I must say you have got some points there about the M17x and 5870... -
-
Well, let's be honest. You will most likely see crossfire 5870's before the Fermi release in June. I would say they would start going on sale by the end of April maybe as late as the end of May.
The other issue is the 940XM is coming out in June or July so why not wait for the 940XM and 5870's together. Order your PC in July. -
But dispite I would like these announcements to be made by Dell AW, I think this will be unlikely aswell, pure out of a marketing perspective. (They would have to scrap all their 4870 cards, because new cards are out)...
-
By the way since this is taking so long, I am starting to wonder if they will just pass on the 5870's crossfire and just go directly to the 5970's crossfire.
-
-
Well I was being sarcastic but yeah the Fermi based cards are supposed to come out in June. The question is how long will Dell take to put them into a PC and if they will even be of any value...
M17x refresh buyers- why not wait for ATI 5870's??
