Maybe but it's starting to be a long wait. If they come in May then I will be forced to wait for the replacement of the 920XM which should come over the summer.

-
How long have the R2s been out now? The ones from Alienware not George Lucas.
-
From a Team Blackhawk Member;
"A lot of people are asking. The second we get them tested in our systems, we will get them launched. I am told it will be very soon." -
Another "insider" prediction. I've been hearing the same story for months. The 5870's will be ready when they're ready. And I'll be waiting with my credit card
-
Now that's funny! Or you can get a G73JH! lol, i wonder how cross-fire 5870's for notebooks are going to be? A single 5870 is really ridiculous and powerful, something i have been waiting for a long long time.
-
agree!if they say "very soon" means end of this year, i will not surprise
-
Still not so confident that the 5870's won't lead to problems down the road. CF 4870's seem to have a 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 with "problems" of varying types. And I don't relish the idea of needing to reformat down the road just to get a driver to install. That's just insane.
But Nvidia DX 11 is nothing more than rumor mill, and deadlines that they've blown often so far. Summer is probably a pipe dream for NV Dx11 parts.
Have to see I guess. Red just doesn't leave me without worries is all. -
What 920XM replacement? Isn't Sandy Bridge supposed to come next year?
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
Because there will never be M17x R2 w/ 5870M
-
Have some hope, m8!
Don't you see the point here? The R3 is almost a year away and the only upgrades available till then - 5870s, 940XM and USB 3.0. If AW launches them right now (except 940XM which is not available till Q3), they will have nothing to tease us with for almost a year. They need to have a few tricks up their sleeves remaining
Save some money meanwhile! -
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
I'm saving...
I won't quit Alienware. Damn! I miss the bling bling. After selling my R1 I can't fall in love with whateva laptops. I always end up hating them. Backlit keyboard look ridiculous compared to Dslade theme
I also miss its speed. Other laptop I tried or owned are pretty much slower.
Damn! That's the negative side of having the best
-
Can't disagree. Facing the same issue here. Just got the lenovo workstation and sending it back, not even close, not even in build quality. Nothing. Pathetic....
AW all the way! -
And still the waiting continues! But I'm going to camp this one out until the new card is there! Currently a very old pavilion ze5600 is called for duty untill the R2!
Men, I just can't wait, the money is burning... -
Looks like end of April will be when you guys get those 5870s. They're going to be very expensive individually so I'll probably hold off on upgrading for a while.
-
Or sell you current system and buy another R2 w/5870's. <--- What I would do
Would be cheaper although much longer of a wait (maybe not as we don't know if Dell will even have stock for replacement cards to purchase individually yet). -
Good news!
As for the price, I hope we could use the same cards that Clevo uses. They cost ~500$ per card now. -
Dell doesn't sell things like that for reasonable prices.
I am going to say a pair of those with cable will run easily $1500 from Dell. -
Now that's a price worth waiting for....
-
The dual 4870s are playing every game I own at max for now so I'll just keep it. The 5870s would be fun for a few days of benchmarking but other than that I can't see them adding much. Plus the wait on building a new system is unpredictable and excruciatingly long so I'm not about to wait until June for my 5870m system to ship. Guess I'll just hold off a few months (maybe until July) and then buy them individually from a Dell contact. -
Yep, I might do the same.
Would sell the 4870s later on, but only if there's a way to keep the warranty intact. -
+1, word-for-word.
Currently on homemade desktop + old hp pavilion dz-1250us; but camping out for the m17x-r2 / 5870 CrossfireX ... -
One of the Admins over at the Black hawk Facebook page said the 5870's would be here very soon today. Who knows????
LeeU -
today? which day? i do not think so
-
This is a troll... or is it.
As for getting the 5870s I think I'll pass for now. The 4870s are fine for me.
Edit: It is meant to be a bad troll, I was bored and made this in paint...Attached Files:

Lol, nice try. Looks real, but you need to edit the bars on the left to include the 5870s
-
I am assuming people are referring to this:
-
very much a troll if they were going to charge extra it certainly wouldn't be $300 and $600 more
that is fail and hard fail -
He was answering my question, that was my FB post
-
if you bought them from dell as an upgrade, and I don't see why you wouldn't, they would become a part of your warranty.
the main reasons to get them from dell would be:
1. those 5870's would be designed and tested for the m17x
2. they would come with a crossfire cable that fits the grooves of the chassis.
3. it would be a part of your warranty. if you've got complete care, this is essential.
so even if it is overpriced, the long-term benefits become obvious. I'm also pretty sure one could sell dual 4870's on ebay or craigslist for a pretty penny, as they are still extremely powerful and (relatively) modern mobile gpus.
One thing I'm curious about... a lot of people are talking about upgrading to the 5870 from their 280s or 4870s or 260s when it comes out, but when I go to dell spare parts and upgrades, for the m17x, there isn't even a video cards category, or even anywhere where it seems possible to purchase 280's or 4870's for someone looking to upgrade from single cards or 260's.
is there somewhere else I should be looking or do you guys plan on buying new systems/heading to ebay? -
I made a post on that about a week ago on the group page too
lol

Thanks for clearing up my troll status. I guess it is safer to lurk than contribute.

I'm one of those on the "waiting to hear list" from Team Blackhawk, I know there are others. If any actually happens it will show up on NBR in a heartbeat. -
What % wise do you guys think the 5870's will be more powerful over the
4870's,cause i pulled the trigger and I'm starting to regret it a little. -
You won't find these kind of parts online. lol
You will have to call them up and give them the part number and order it that way.
Although it would be nice if every component was listed and available to purchase online similar to HP parts store. -
you mean you can buy 280's and 4870's (assuming they're in stock) from dell spare parts over the phone, if you know the part #? this is crazy, i always thought that the online offering was the same as you would get over the phone.
-
You can buy anything over the phone if you know the part number. Depending on the item they may need to get approval before selling it but they've sold me everything I've ever asked for.
-
I have the worst computer insiron 1525 pity me... Somebody must know when the 5870s are coming to m17x? arrrghhh!
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
I ended up using all my save money which is supposed for the 5870M myth. Now I'm stuck w/ a poor Sony Vaio FW lol
I made a mistake by selling my R1 lol. I miss it so much
-
Will the Sager/Clevo models get 5870 crossfire before the M17x? I haven't paid that close attention in the past as to who gets the new stuff first.
-
None of them have it. The Clevo x8100 has dual 285M but no ATI option.
-
Oh, so the x8100 doesn't support ATI cards/crossfire? The M17x will be the only laptop with double 5870?
-
Ouch even after waiting for my system for 3 months and listing to people who say wait and this or that. I am happy with a M17x with ati 4870.
If you wait for every upgrade you will be on the sideline forever. -
yeah vouch for that..
i'm waiting for my M17XR2 with dual 4870. will do it's job just fine.
people already waiting for there new ati cards for 3 monts.
when i got my M1730 with dual 8700 few months later dual 8800m came around and then 9800m. if you wait long enough you can get a 3d laptop with 16 cores and quad graphics.
i live now and for now the 4870 will suffice. the fact remains when you buy a computer it's already outdated by the time dell delivered it
might upgrade to faster cards when i'm not able to run certain games anymore. but that will problably be next year or later. -
yes.
If you like to benchmark you definitely want the latest and greatest card. The only advantage for gaming is DX11 support. -
if benchmark was a game maybe i would play it. but heck it's just numbers.
personally i don't care about benches. as long it works and games play smooth it should not really matter.
4870>5870 aint that a bigga deal except the dx11.
but when dx11 will be properly put to use were in 2011. -
It is a game
-
Since there are DX11 games already released DX11 comes into play right away.
Yep. There is still a challenge to get a higher score over the next person. -
i'll pass on the benchmarking "games"
nobody crossfired a pair of 5870 yet? or just too expensive? -
There are no cf-capable 5870's to buy yet.
M17x refresh buyers- why not wait for ATI 5870's??
