I agree with you, this is what I suspect long time AW users have feared, Dell is moving to using the AW name as a cover for plain old Dell products with a higher end video card and charging 30% more. Essentially, the high-end glamor rigs like M17x/M15x will give way to re-branded XPS systems sporting the AW head and a lit keyboard. Meh I say.
Dell needs to do what Honda use to do with the Prelude... use it as a platform for showing where the company was going with it's designs and technology. Then Honda killed it and we got the Civic Si, so maybe that's not such a good illustration![]()
However, if they are going to make a gaming laptop we will drool over... I still won't like a lid made out of recycled 2 liter Coke bottles... maybe we will get lucky and they will make an aluminum case option, but they would charge so much it would be very annoying I suspect.

Oh... My... God...

Google mate
By the way, its 3 displays in a row in front of your face instead of 1

Yes it sucks, i prefer to have a metal chasis notebook like my xps m1530 when i had it, it was really good. I don't always like using something that is made of plastic, Sager have great components and great cooling! But man their chasis really suck, those machines aren't cheap either but for the price you pay like joker said once, i rather have a metal magnesium. Damn you freaking Asus, why can't you have a better metal chasis what the hell is the problem, oh wait i forget the economy! That is always what is behind this recently.
-
Sorry im a little lost here.. Has the alienware changed to plastic allready or when will that happen?
-
Meant to happen in the future.
-
Man no word on 5870's? Thats not good
-
if the 5870 does come in play, im sure it will its just a waiting game does anyone think it will be available for the m15x? the 260m is geting a lil dated plus im a lil upset they didnt put the 280m in the m15x
-
Do you work for Rockadine or Boeing? The Shuttle belly is like Starafoam. Glued to the bottem it and at lunch you can see parts of it come off while Lunching . You can take a torch to it it deflects the heat. Unless they found something differnt I dont think they will use it for computers. We will get another m15x defects. (my screen comming apart).
I think having copper is the best or aluminum second best for laptop computer case.
Yes if they can make a plastic that can stand ware of time as well as heat. it would be good. -
@mightymax, I'm not sure it will be available on the M15X, although it would be nice if it was, but as it stands, even the ATI 4870 is not supported by the M15X. To date the BIOS won't support it.
-
Ya The Moo and someone else went to fast food restrant to test it. It was a flop.
-

The "someone else" is Witcher lol
-
An update: was talking to my rep and he has confirmed that 5870 will be out by march 1st week. And he also told me the rgb option will be up by then too in UK.
-
Oneabove, thanks so much for that info, I will be returning my laptop now for a full refund! Dual 5870s and I7-920x here I come! I also got two 250 gig SSD for a sweet price so I'm really excited!
-
i hope that rep knows what he's talking about.
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
Wow... Me either hope your rep knows what he was talking about. 1st week of March is about right
Im tempted to test my new 5.1 system. I havent tested it yet since I dont have any computer lol
-
Somebody is about to stop camping?
-
Wow - just about another 2 ~ 3 weeks; Well worth the wait!!!
"Redemption is at hand" - Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura
-
Agreed well worth the wait.
-
Well the thing is he got this information from the marketing team itself. I asked him if it was just an assumption but he was very confident( and this is the first time I heard him sound that confident lol). So it seems week 1 next month would put an end to my waiting. A month n a half without a laptop wasn't/isn't easy.
-
I'll wait another 2-3 weeks after they introduce HD5870's
Because all of your " returned" M17x will "return" to you with new GPU and I can buy b'new M17x after couple of weeks...lol -
Wonder how much Dellienware would charge for a swap on the 4870's... or is it just a plain purchase and you have to move the 4870's on the market yourself? Sorry, new to this whole game with Dellienware but I am learning fast...
-
I also spoke with a rep that seemed to think the 5870's were on their way - he even asked me if I wanted to upgrade my reorder with the 5870's. He ended up being wrong about me being able to order them today, but he said he knew about them - whatever that means.
Hopefully they come out soon, I wanna pull the trigger on this and will be the first in line when they're available. -
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
5.1 is outdated. upgrade already will ya silly !!!! -
wut do you mean by this?
-
I think he's implying that those of us that pull the trigger on the new 5870 machines will get stuffed with refurbs.
-
That's possible but unlikely. Out of the thousands of PC they sell, mostly just the people here take the time to exchange them for something new. So we are talking about dozens of refurbs...
-
If I receive a refurb it's going up the @ss of the jack that sent it to me.

I have just spent all my hard earned money on my new speakers and you already said bad thing about it
Lol its more about speaker type + sound quality + output power + room size combined rather than how many speakers in the room
Hell no

Megacharge Custom User Title
Yep the 5870's are 60W. -
im guessing the 5870s refresh will come with usb3.0 support so wouldnt that mean new mobo?
-
i was wondering that myself. is there going to be a new Mobo with the 5870s? or is it going to use the same mobo? any ideas anyone?
-
Could be.
No one knows for sure do don't expect any information other than speculation. -
wouldn't the 5870's be great with a new mobo that had integrated graphics like the R1. battery life for when on the go.
-
I suspect the 5870s will simply be an upgrade to the 4870's with nothing else. Would be amazing if we did get USB 3.0 with them tho - but I doubt it due to the recent refresh. It'll probably the next M17x iteration before we see 3.0.
-
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
I think 5870 is the ONLY update in March (if any)
We know new mobo with IGP and USB 3.0 are cool but... be realistic
-
Agreed with SillyHoney.
The card will be the only upgrade.
It's better that way since the M17X R2 is the only one that has no issues after fixing the flickering.
Who wants another round of 6 months of some crappy M17X R3? -
There are only few desktop mobos supporting USB3 so far, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see it coming as well as SATA3 in Q1 2011.
We'll have enough time to deal with the current crappiness before the new one arrives.
Now seriously, neither R1 nor R2 are that bad. That's just the "Bleeding" part of the Bleeding Edge Tech , heh.... -
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
No way I will be a desperated camper until Q1 2011
-
can't wait for the 5870!!
-
Im expecting to hear something about the 5870's from Dell in the next 12 days at CeBIT. I'll assume it'll be maybe 2-4 weeks (2-6 March in Hannover, Germany) after that that they hit production. Then I may finally get an R2
-
i hope the 5870 version of AW is 256 bit memory bus that faster than the one of asus g73 just like 512mb 4870 of w90vp compared to 1gb of m17x
-
i'm thinking it's going to be 128bit.
-
The wait is getting unbearable ... damnit!!
-
Another happy camper
-
ATI will start releasing official mobile drivers from next month. That makes sense
-
I'm one of the many waiting on my M17x R2 but...
I just got the "order delayed" email due to, "availability of a particular part." They're now telling me I'll see it around March 2nd, 2010. I know it's only a couple weeks away but... Do you guys really think we'll see 5870s as an orderable option as soon as March? If so, I think maybe I should cancel/reorder to get the more recent cards included.
Thoughts? -
lol, I will be, and on a side note. Got an email from my rep, they got my M17X R1, and said I should expect my payment in the next 12-15 days. Just in time for Post CeBIT releases
-
Dell/AW is usually not late to the party when it comes to mobile technology. Sometimes they are the first to market with new mobile GPU's. I THINK dell was first to market with the m7900GTX (which i had in their xps) and then a year later with the 8800MGTX. I would confidently think that they will have 5870's in their flagship models in about a month. No doubt.
-
The timing hardly ever could be better.
M17x refresh buyers- why not wait for ATI 5870's??
