The sad part is it doesn't matter.. Sales of the M17x are probably out of this world.

No doubt...but Nvidia naming convention vs ATI naming convention is the topic of the other thread in the Side Topic forums. ;)

That's only because Nvidia overclocks the hell out of everything. You can only overclock old tech so much before you blow up the chip.

Im just happy that if they do release new cards for the machine i can just toss them right in there and is why i always loved dell . Ive been upgrading my video cards in my laptops since my Inspiron 8200 and thru all the XPS line Gen1 GEN2 and 1710 (never bought the 1730 though).

1730 would have been difficult to upgrade due to the single pcb design (unless dell came out with newer cards, of course).

Good thing you didn't get it because it's dead now.

i think Q4 will be a truly ground shaking quarter....

IF the gt300 design hits and the mobile i5's hit....
    ddr5 chips will be out
ATI new cards will be released....

    I'm excited

As you can tell, they killed the better 9800M cards on the M1730 and replaced them with suckier 8700M GTs.That means dell is investing in Alienware to be their top laptop gaming machines.

Except you'll be sitting on the sidelines because you just ordered a M17x..lol

I know if that happened to me I'd be a little disappointed seeing new toys and being stuck with a fairly recent purchase....

I don't know the rationale behind it but Dell decided to use the single pcb SLI setup.

I had the 8700's then got the 8800 GTX's. I really liked that system and am a little sad that Dell is discontinuing the XPS line :(

Lol even when that stuff gets announced dont plan on it being in actual machines till many months later or rather machines that you would actually want to purchase .

The M17x will be around for awhile :) CPU speed plays such a small role in overall performance that the only thing i would be concerned about is new GPUs . A 3.0ghz Quadcore is plenty for quite awhile, its just always fun to have a faster CPU not needed in the least bit .

Hopefully developers will actually make games that can take advantage of all the good stuff .

Alan Wake which was announced forever and a day ago for PC to be one of the first to require a quad core to even play it has now been put on hold for PC to focus all there attention to the 360 , just another example of PCs getting the shaft.

Everytime i read of another developer giving up on PC gaming to go to consoles it gets me very depressed lol and i own all the new consoles .

Could care less about mobile i5's as i would have no use

What desktop ATI card are you talking about?

The 40-nm HD 4770 has been selling for quite awhile now and the 40-nm DX11 RV870 GPU for the desktop 5800 series cards will be finalized in August and up for sale by the time Win7 rolls out...a good couple of months before the GT 300 series Nvidia cards.

You won't see a mobile 5800 card until earliest next spring but more likely late summer or even the fall. If I had to guess I'd say in a MSI GT 725 upgrade.

hoesntly i see the gt300 being the 1st gen 260 with 192SP' instead of 216. and it may have gddr5 or they might wait for ati to release it.

Nvidia is claiming GT 300 will be new architecture using GDDR5 and not a rebrand...though that may just be the desktop cards.

I'm betting it's new tech because they're totally incapable of die shrinking the G200 GPUs they used for the desktop GTX 260 thru 295. Which would explain why they went back and die shrunk the 9500 for the desktop GT 210 and 220.

As for ATi they've been using GDDR5 for quite awhile....just not in a mobile card. ;þ
