I no longer provide current support for Alienware products and no longer own any Alienware systems to test with.
My recommendation is to use @j95 driver mods at this time. This driver mod from j95 is your best bet for newer games, but those with 780M SLI may continue to have bad performance due to unexplained throttling problems.

Hey
I have a GTX 780m on an Alienware M17xr3 Windows 7.

^ I followed that to get it fixed
I am trying to update my graphics card to 372.70 so I can play Battlefield 1. As it is I have no idea how to mod it so I can update. Your update for 344.75 is working wonders for me. I did some research and tried to find a modded update for it and simply couldn't. Whenever I try to update it normally Nvidia installer doesn't recognize it my driver (as I expected) so I was wondering how I could go about updating. -
-
I've installed newest 372.70 to play Battlefield 1 Open Beta and they work really good. One need to force SLI BF4 profile to get it working in BF1 open beta.

Hi everyone!
I'm new to the topic, but found the forums to be useful while assembling a modded Precision M6700 - a CPU upgrade and GPU replacement. The GPU thing seems to be a bit tricky though. As the unit fits my MXM slot I thought it'd be easy, yet turns out I can't get the drivers to install properly. Followed some instructions, tried modding INF files, finally brought me to @Mr Fox's method with desktop drivers. However, it still seems that the laptop is not within it's full potential. Does anybody have any experience with GeForce GTX 880m under the hood of a Precision series laptop or am I the first to try that config? -
I have an 880m do i need to disable DSE in order for this to work and what is DSE anyway ?
-
-> reboot -> F8 -> select 'Disable Driver Signature Enforcement' -> Install drivers -
You need to do it only while installing drivers. You can re-enable it later after installation if it bothers you.

this is probably old but what is the best thermal pad layout for these gtx 880m cards on alienware m1x r2? I cant seem to get it right for the life of me. they both over heat and I'm using the best stuff out there. (grizzly cryonaught)

This is great I was missing the two little pieces he was talking about lol
-
another thing is it normal that one gpu is always at 75 but the fan is full blast and the other is at 79 but the fan is pretty quiet....

Sorry to open up this sorry tale again.
I'm one of the sad guys who is stuck with a clevo laptop with a gtx 880m. I've googled alot and read pages of disturbing info (**** you Nvidia)!!.
My question and cry for help is... what driver should I be using?
Any advice, links to download etc. is most appreciated. -
You could search in the forum for Nvidia drivers This one is the latest.
Or take a look into the T|I forum for help. -
thank you for the quick reply.
I am able to get the newest driver, I am also able to to get a driver dating back to may 2016...
But as I have read, my gpu just gets slower and slower, I then read about Mr. Fox's modded driver and start to wonder if that was a way to go. Maybe clocking.
I just got my laptop back from a major repair, entire chassis changed, monitor and backpanel replaced too. Nasty drop out of bagpack but fully insured.
usually it was win 10 with latest nvidia driver.... bad performance!
Today it is win 8.1 with nvidia 347.88. good benchmark results, but some hickups in some games. Generally it can run games, more than before, but for some reason fallout 4 now fails to run properly.
I only got it back yesterday, today I will do alot of tests and try different drivers.Papusan likes this. -
Do all testing finished before you (if you switch over to newest Windoze X build). Remember you should use DDU in safe mode to remove old drivers before you install (test) new graphics drivers. Follow the Guide in the link. Good luck

people still using these drivers ? They're 3 years old LOLOL.. guys, seriously, upgrade from windows 7. Your like those people who just stopped using XP last year... or windows 98 the year before...

Papusan thank you for your time.
Okay.... Laptop finally came back from the shop, graphiccard has been replaced. sadly still a 880. But it works.
From the store they have updated the driver to the latest which just plummets the benchmarkscores. I have now installed an earlier driver 368.81 which gives 40% higher score than the latest...
So myth definitly confirmed.
Now... are there modded drivers that will be absolutely perfect for my gpu? I probably have to acknowledge never to update via nvidia again.
woodstack. very constructive...Papusan likes this. -
I would talk with @j95 here or in T|I forum regarding what graphics drivers you should try. He is probably the best bet. Also I suggest you could change paste and use high quality Thermal pads.
Edit. See also this regarding 880M
Maybe ask Q for good suggestions in this thread as well.Last edited: May 11, 2017Pawer likes this. -
Thank you. I will try and contact him.
What do you mean by thermal paste AND pads?
The problem is not heating. it maintains the temp just fine.. its more software. I dont know that many ways to test a system, but I've been using Passmarks performance test, the category 3D results in approx 5300 with older drivers. With the latest driver it drops to 3600-3800. thats a huge gap.
I have noticed in some games that the frames just dont hold up as they used to. Have testet it in games I previously have run just fine. f.ex Battlefield 4, when I got the laptop I played everything on ultra no drops. Today I have to go on high settings, with drops.
Same story with Fallout 4 and Vermintide.Papusan likes this. -
Passmark bench tests isn't the best out there. Better go for Games, 3DM suite, 3DM11, 3DM Vantage, Heaven benchmark test for your testing. Good luck. -
That is ofcourse true. I'm gonna go read up a bit on cooling down other parts on the pcb with pads.. thx for the suggestion.

10 is getting to be a pain in the 4$$ with it's installation of crap and spyware it's decent OS but, with the forced reboots and what not can be annoying. i'm amazed i'm running 10 on as many machines as i do, most of my laptops are running linux now. I run XP (still gets new security updates with reg tweak) and 98 on a few of my older/retro gaming machines). 7 Might be an okay compromise.
One nice thing about the 120hz screen and nv GPUs is no iGPU so OSX and Linux are options.Papusan likes this. -
Hello guys, I have an 980m on my laptop, which is a MXL goboxx laptop, and I was wondering if someone could walk me through the process of getting this driver to work correctly. I would love to get the extra 50% more power.
Thank you guys and I appreciate the help, btw I am on windows 10 if that matters
