Well it's Official!
We saw the writing on the way. NVIDIA don't want you overclocking your property anymore.

Does using this modded driver bypasses overclocking restriction?

15th in the world for HWbot 3940XM ranking! Not bad for noob benchmarker like me
.. I'm pretty sure I can do more if I can lock the clocks.. Throttlestop isn't being too stable at 4.5GHz and crashing when I try to lock clocks..

Yep, no I was referring to 347.51 desktop modded.
Yeah I'm still using 344.91 which work well for me and still let me OC my property.joluke, Kade Storm and Mr. Fox like this. -
i tried the 344.75 drivers on my M15x with a gtx770m (11Eo dell card) they didnt change my 3dmark score at all. they did install properly tho. thoughts?
also i tried the latest drivers (347.51) with slv7/prema's OC bios and it locked my card to 400/400 and wouldnt let me adjust the sliders. any thoughts? dumping back to 344.75Last edited: Feb 16, 2015 -
oh boy 770M getting locked now as well?
-
its the oddest thing. it worked fine until i flashed the card. then the card was stuck at 400/400.
tried to flash my dump of the stock bios and it was locked 400/400 even tho it was clocking fine before.

Yes you can modify them to the mobile version too
What gives you that impression rob?

Mr. Fox said: ↑Wait, 344.75 (this driver) does not block overclocking on Maxwell. I am using this driver with 980M with excellent results, and so are Santander and Johnksss.

i have 2 different ideas going on haha. i installed Mr. foxes modded drivers by editing the nv_display file and adding the gtx770m. i did this before flashing the OC bios. after running a few 3dmark11 runs I saw no difference in 3mark11 scores. everytime i score the same. 5208 for gpu
so i installed the latest mobile drivers and ran another 3dmark11 run. same score of 5208.
flashed the card with the latest drivers still installed and it clocked to 400/400
reflashed it to stock and it clocked 400/400
ran ddu and brought it back to standard mobile drivers 344.77 and the card started to clock up to normal and was oc'able with software.
so it gets even better... uninstalled the mobile drivers with ddu went to Mr. Fox's modded drivers and it locks its clocks at 400/400
uninstall with ddu and reinstall mobile drivers and it goes back to normal and i can OC it againLast edited: Feb 16, 2015 -

So does this mean, with these drivers, the 980Ms are fully functional without throttle issues, or am I to understand that you simply mean you can overclock the cards no problem (not locked out), but the issues remain?
-
This driver mod was released before NVIDIA shenanigans with "clock blocking" and it works great. My 980M SLI is now in a Clevo and never throttles. You're going to have throttling from 980M in an Alienware no matter what drivers you use. The throttling is less with the crappy new locked-down drivers that do not permit overclocking. If NVIDIA stops with the "clock blocking" nonsense you will still have throttling issues to deal with running 980M in an Alienware.

I do not know the reason. I wish I did and could have fixed it. That would have saved me a bunch of money buying a Clevo. I really wanted it to work well and I was sad that it did not.
-
Sometimes. Depends on the driver and the amount of power the CPU overclock is drawing. If your power utilization hits 330W it will drop like a rock. If you use one of the crappy clock-locked drivers it is not as bad, but overclocking is essentially a no-go with 980M in the Alienware M18xR2/18. Something appears to be all goofed up in the BIOS or EC... GPU appears to be listening to something it should not be concerned with and throttling to stay within some sort of artificial power draw threshold.
-
Does this apply with the 880m? I've not had throttling issues on mine but it has 880m sli
-
980M does not behave the same as 880M. 980M works flawlessly in the right machine, but the M18xR2/M17xR4/17/18 have some issues with it.

Ok sweet
on another note, NVIDIA cracked! They are releasing overclocking features in the next driver update for 900m series GPU's. Seen on PC Gamer this morning

Can we expect a new modified by you driver release after nvidia new 'old' OC enabled driver Mr Fox?
Any way to update just SLI profiles and not full drivers itself?Mr. Fox likes this. -

Thanks I'll ask him by PM.

Mr. Fox this may be a no brainer question but in the picture I've provided, if you put thermal pads in the middle of the two .5 boxes, would the 880m over heat? I'm using heatsink that has this area closed and hovers right over those spaces. I know the heatsink meant for this GPU has this area open but no official heatsink is available for the m18x r2. What can I use? Should I just leave it hovering without pads? Or put pads in between?

I have thermal pads on those components with my 780M and 980M GPUs. You can use 0.5mm pads and where the stair-stepped area of the heat sink is not present, stack two or three of them to fill up the air gap. Or, you can get a small sample of the extra soft and spongy 1.0mm or 1.5mm thermal pads that will compress down to 0.5mm or less and use them in that location instead.
-
Ok awesome! My first GPU is going up to 92C and I was just curious if that was the reason. I keep re pasting it but still gets just about as hot. The second GPU I only had to do once and will reach about 68 when I'm playing warframe (my only sli game I currently own) and my second (primary) one gets to 84 I don't think that's normal but I might be wrong though

Seriously... http://www.kitguru.net/components/g...-overclocking-of-geforce-gtx-900m-with-vbios/
Vbios will now be even more limited regarding overclocking capabilities... What's the point of enabling it in drivers if then they further block it in Vbios ??

Mr. Fox said: ↑Just use an older vBIOS that doesn't have the cancer ingredients. It's a shame NVIDIA is turning more crappy on us, but that doesn't mean you have to use their trashy new messed up vBIOS. Stock NVIDIA vBIOSes have sucked since Fermi. The production of crap from NVIDIA is not a new experience, but they do seem to be getting worse instead of better.Click to expand...elcrazy93 likes this.
