----------Good evening, question... what is INF and how does one modify it. (ps I did order my GTX 980m s/b here by 5/20/15,so maybe I should hold off asking questions till then)

I like to mod my 780 Ti looks like Titan X.
Can somebody check what's wrong on this pics:
    http://i.imgur.com/fJAmSSl.png
    http://i.imgur.com/F8ipWvm.png

I make regedit to GPU Hardware ID and if I then boot GPU-Z or something like that, it looks like Titan X.
But if I boot my computer, it comes back to 780 Ti.
And I can't trick Nvidia Control Panel anyways.

There's no any editors either to change BIOS ID looks like Titan X.

You should not do that, you can brick your card by changing BIOS ID and nvidia driver will give you bad performance or it can even destroy your GPU by forcing other clocks. It's only safe to play with registry but GPU-z is very hard to trick.

Hey @Mr. Fox , do you recommend me to flash a new VBIOS for my 880ms as i can't even maintain a stable 993MHz. The performance in games is fantastic though. In benchmarks, it could be much higher. I uploaded a 3dmark firestrike score a while back and got so many questions and responses like as lying it's definitely photoshopped :( People say it's impossible for me to get the scores I got. The 880ms are that, the 880ms are this. I got 12500 points BTW and it was using stock clock speeds. People don't get that the 880ms are better now. They finally outperform the 780ms with a proper overclock and VBIOS. And I can swap the 880ms to the 980ms literally now if i wish to but I just don't justify wasting 1000USD as of yet. Maybe in 1.5 to 2 years time, yes, as the 880ms won't be able to play games at ultra settings. But for now, I just want a little but of guidance without saying that I am a lying noob :(

Well, nobody should be calling you a liar. That's just not right and I'm not calling you a liar. I think it is possible you could be mistaken, and I think it is possible that you got a benchmark score that was high due to a glitch in the benchmark, but I don't have anything to go off of one way or the other. It is important to understand that everyone is skeptical for good reason. None of us have ever seen a fantastic example of 880M that works right so that is why everyone wants proof. I probably speak for everyone in saying we would like nothing better than to see 880M working correctly. I know I would. If you cannot maintain a stable 993MHz that raises questions about the scores because great benchmark scores don't happen with GPUs that have erratic behavior, unless there is a glitch of some sort that gave a false reading in the benchmark. That's why everyone is pressuring you for proof. Bottom line is, I think we all want you to be right, but nobody is going to believe it without proof. We have seen nothing but bad examples of 880M cards that don't overclock well, throttle like crazy, overheat and are generally unstable.

If you haven't already done so, flash the vBIOS that @GodlikeRU provided. See what happens with your system behavior. He seems to be getting consistent results with that vBIOS. Check the version you have again the one @GodlikeRU provided just to be sure that is not the one you are already using. Be sure to save the vBIOS you have on your GPUs right now. If the one @GodlikeRU provided does not work as well you can flash back your original vBIOS.

Thanks a lot Mr.Fox, you are really kind :) That's true but I think from what I saw, the 880ms have definitely improved with the latest nVidia drivers from a game point of view. The 880ms could be considered as underperforming in benchmarks due to the terrible throttling it gets. It does not even work at the designed boost speed but does so in games(I can't comprehend that :)) and the power limit is locked. It pretty much sums up what Ethrem said. I'll try and flash the VBIOS and report back on the performance. Again, thanks a lot Mr.Fox :)

Hello and greetings. Ok my GTX 980m finally showed. I followed every direction I found online. checking each step twice, downloaded four
separate drivers (just in case). Got new GPU installed, powered up (no smoke so happy so far) during boot held F8 to disable detection. Followed directions to overwrite NV_disbi.inf file. I found the portion of file that listed cards and added the 10-12 new lines via notepad and saved in file.
Go to add any of the drivers, all tell me same thing "the graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware"
    Tried,
    347.88 notebook
    Video_driver_7xy5t_win64_344.88
    Mr..Fox 344.75 desktop mod v2.0 (wouldn't open)
    352.86 notebook (Nvidia website)
All say same warning. As said before, I am not good beyond the hardware portion of machines. Software/programing not my knowledge base.
at this point willing to peer to peer for anyone brave enough to assist.
    Gratefully Davandpet.

    Hi All,

Go easy on me as a first time poster.

Been reading the threads and becoming more and more confused o_O

Currently have a m18xR1 with hd6990 GPU, ones failed and running on one. Now have in my possession a single 880m and would like advice on how to set this up once the card has been installed.

The confusing part for me is the understanding the vbios, which driver should I be using, disabling of x,y,z before installing modded driver, removing the old driver, etc.

I have read @GodlikeRU guides but he has stopped short of what is required once it has been installed.

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

Just to add the 880 came from a 17r5 2013.

    Hey,

Sorry if my guide looks hard or incomplete to you. Ask me any questions that you have :)

If you want to install 880M using NV100W heatsink then it's plug'n'play. If using AMD100W heatsink then modding guide is in my signature but you already read it yup?

    Hey GodlikeRU

Your post are fantastic, easy to follow. Only bit I am a bit unsure of is this bit

' You also should look carefully on the welded copper part and use electrical tape when you think it's neceessary to avoid sticking metal parts to the GPU metal parts '

Other that that I'm ok to follow.

The main bit for me which I cannot find a guide is once you have installed the card (non sli in this case), what is the next steps?

Do I need vBios being non sli?
Do I need to upgrade my laptop bios?
Do I need to disable various before driver install?
What point do I need to install driver?
Do I need to remove all amd driver and revert to he integrated card?

Any pointers in this area would be most helpful .

As for the electrical tape, when you mod the heatsink you should check if the new part that you soldered isn't in contact with other metal gpu parts as it can cause short circuits. If you see that in some place it could be in contact just use normal tape for electrical things that will not pass electricity through.

    1. You can try if it throttles, you also could have newest stock vBIOS so you won't experience throttling. If you experience throttling then just flash vBIOS from my signature.
    2. Don't know but you should install unlocked A05 just for comfort
    3. Nope, plug'n'play :)
    4. When you put the cards in the slot/slots and boot to windows
    5. Yes exactly but install unlocked A05 first as you can switch between IGFX/PEG in unlocked bios without needing to push FN+F7

This was exactly what I wanted, thank you so much for your guidance.

Think I now have the picture in mind of the steps although it is never straight forward as of most upgrades. :)

Do I use Mr Fox latest modded driver? Also once that has been installed, can I then update the driver as normal or do I have to continue with modded drivers?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hey,

There are 3 modes in the bios:

SG mode - Optimus, external GPU and internal are enabled - Display is tied to IGFX and external GPU just renders the screen - you probably was using this
IGFX mode - only internal gpu
PEG mode - Display is rerouted to external GPU to ensure maximum performance and no lags in display - You should use this mode for everyday gaming.

When you have SLI you should not use SG mode, if you want to use internal GPU then switch to IGFX, for gaming switch to PEG. When mounting new card switch to IGFX, mount it, then switch to PEG to ensure that laptop will boot. If it booted to windows then just install the drivers (Mr. fox ones for first time) and play ;)

I don't know if the SG will work with the one 880M but I don't see why it would not. You can try SG mode in the BIOS.

Good luck with mounting new gpu ;)

    Hi,

Had to abandon yesterday due to an issue with the heatsink and soldering. Will order son thermal glue instead.

Anyhow tried to boot to internal graphics but no matter what mode i tried it will boot up until the windows logo. In the end dreaded repair mode commences and the stats to loop. Only then when I put it back to PEG back onto the HD6990 does it then work. Culd this be a driver issue although when i try to install the internal grahics driver it says its not possible. Using win 8.1.

I have a feeling that since the laptop went to single card that's when I was unable to go to the internal GPU. Will this be an issue when it comes to upgrading the card? Also how do you mount the new card using IGFX then over to PEG?

Managed to get into IGFX after updating all indows updatesbut it is painfully slow and once window loads I'm unable to do much as its that slow.

    Any ideas?

Yup works perfectly, if I was to guess I would probably say its win 8, which if I was to rebuild will work fine which I really don't want to do.

Think I will just got for the install and if it don't work then look at either going back to HD6990 and building windows again.

If I was to straight install should I be able to see the 880 in PEG and go from there? Or is it a must to go IGFX first?

You never need to use IGFX unless you want to use the Intel HD Graphics for some reason. These machine were never really intended to work in SG (Optimus) mode. The only settings they were designed to use are IGFX and PEG. Using SG mode works OK with 980M if you don't despise Optimus like a lot of us do, but I have never been able to access the discrete GPU for 3D performance/gaming with older video cards. The discrete GPU is visible in the BIOS and in Device Manager in SG mode along with the Intel iGPU, you can flash the vBIOS on your discrete GPU and install drivers with it set to SG mode, but gaming has never used discrete graphics in SG mode with any GPU except 980M for me.

If you have two GPUs installed the FN+F7 key combo switches from PEG to IGFX in Windows. With one GPU installed this typically does not work in Windows and you have to manually flip the BIOS from IGFX to PEG to switch. Be careful with other settings on the video configuration screens. If you set some of the options wrong the machine will no longer boot and will need to be blind flashed to recover. (Clearing the CMOS in the normal manner will not reset them.) Only mentioning that to discourage experimenting with those settings. If you're not 100% positive what the outcome will be, do not change any of the other video configuration options.

    Hey,

IGFX was only mentioned by me to ensure safe boot. You can install your 880M and boot with PEG without changing it.

@GodlikeRU , @Mr. Fox thank you for you explanation in these settings.

As I like to experiment I've already had to do a CMOS reset which luckily for me worked out well.

Think I have a handle on this now and will attempt to upgrade again once the glue has arrived.

Some earlier M18xR1/R2 owners had very serious problems getting 880M to work right and never succeeded. Two of them I know of got frustrated and bought a Clevo just like I did with 980M SLI. @GodlikeRU is actually the first success story. I think the vBIOS version he has must be the reason. You may want to consider using that one if it is not the same as the one on your GPU.

Mr.Fox. I had never tried this driver as I had gone between the modded 345.20 and the stock releases from Nvidia so I decided to install this driver last night. I was most recently on the stock 353.06 and was making out ok as I was playing COD AW and can run that game extremely easy. When I installed this driver I noticed a major difference between it and your modded 345.20.

the major difference is that it hardly ever throttles. Cards are at max stock about 95% of the time and when they do dip, they only dip a little. Lowest I saw was 888 and 911. With the modded 345.20, I still got major, consistent throttling. They also run a bit cooler. Never going over 73 while every other driver including the 345.20 allows them to hit 80.

However, the negative is that despite my cocks being generally much higher with this driver, my fps are slightly lower. With the other drivers, I get 50-80 (average low 60's) depending on my throttle level. With this driver and almost no throttle, I see 45 -70 (average in low 50's) and the visuals don't look quite as good. That is a big fluctuation for not having throttling issues. I guess that is because it's just an older, less optimized driver? Also noticed that the clocks never drop below the stock 953 even when I switch back to adaptive and nothing is running.

Anyway, figured I would let you know. Looks like you were really onto something with this driver regarding the throttling issues. Do you think using geforce experience to optimize the game settings will help offset the decrease in performance I am seeing or is it just due to the age of the driver? I would love to stay with this one and my full clocks but not if I actually get less performance. Anyway, thought it was interesting and wanted to let you know for what it's worth.

@Awhispersecho - thanks for letting me know how it worked. It could be driver optimization or the SLI profile is less effective with COD AW. What you might try is using NVIDIA Inspector to export the profiles for COD AW and any other games you play with a newer driver installed, then reinstall this one and use Inspector to import the newer profiles that you exported. That works really well for some games, but not as well for others. Using GFE may help accomplish the same thing.

It works on my M18x R2 with 680M in SLI. I was having some difficulty figuring out what driver to use. I know this is an old one but it works well for the games I play. Heck, this 680M SLI is beating my 880M pretty hard and it's staying cooler as well. I *really* like this machine.

Run DDU and install the latest driver after that. Don't just run it cause Mr.Fox's drivers are modified desktop ones so you won't be able to just run GeForce experience or install another driver on top of that. Remove it first with the help of DDU and move on.

It's near impossible for your 680m sli to beat your 880M even with a hefty overclock. Either your 880M is broken and can't stay at full clock speed or it's throttling and losing performance due to huge heat output. Either way, if this is the case, throw that disgraceful 880M out the window.

All I know is that with the 680M SLI at stock clocks I never go below 70 fps in MWO at the highest settings. With the 880M I see it drop into the 50s at times and I reduce some settings to get it to run smooth. The 880m is holding its clocks thanks to Svl7. It is not throttling due to heat as I rarely see it go over 80c thanks to my cooling mods.

Like it or not, those are the facts.

@PC GAMER that is not accurate. 680M SLI is every bit as awesome, even more than, the 880M SLI. With svl7's vBIOS mod and gradual (very slow coming) driver improvements the 880M GPU is much better than it used to be, but it's still not a great GPU and doesn't perform as well as it should. It was one of NVIDIA's many recent engineering mistakes. Even with heavy overclocking I have seen very few examples of 880M SLI benchmarks that can match my 680M SLI benchmarks.

@deadsmiley comments about what a great GPU the 680M is are very accurate. I had 680M SLI for a long time and overclocked the crap out of it before 780M SLI and I would take a pair of 680M cards over 880M any day of the week. They are awesome. Their only area of weakness is 2GB Dell and 4GB Clevo vRAM capacities. But, the Dell 2GB 680M cards consistently outperform the 4GB 680M cards because they overclock better than the Clevo GPUs.

With the 780M SLI driver throttling issues I have on anything newer than 345.20 I am starting to wish I had 680M SLI setup back. At least they work right with the latest drivers.

Can changes on newer Nvidia drivers for Gtx880m affected your gtx780m to be as crippled as Gtx880m ??

I am not sure what you are asking. Drivers released after 345.20 make my 780M SLI unusable and worse than 880M.

What I meant was that Nvidia might have made some changes in their latest drivers who were in favor of Gtx880m and newer graphics. Gtx880m work better than before. Gtx780m sli perhaps are not prioritized in the latest drivers from Ngridia. Everyone knows that Nvidia **** in old graphics card. Some things are changed in newer drivers as you probably think/know.

GTX 880M always work bad if you don't have newest vBIOS as it throttles on old one.

One thing I would like to point out is that the 880M will "run away" with very high frame rates at the main menu and while loading a map. It is so bad that the GPU actually overheats. I combat that by capping the fps at 60 for the game. I don't need to do this with the 680M SLI as it behaves well. Not sure why these things are so different. I have lived with the 880M for about a year and a half now. It does the job but is rather finicky about setup and definitely about which driver is used. I found that once I had it running well, don't mess with it. Don't try new drivers especially. I had the 880M running very well on a specific driver and after a few months I thought it would be good to try a newer one. It was a throttling train wreck. I went back to the previous driver after using DDU and it was never the same. I couldn't get any kind of stable overclock. I even reinstalled the OS in desperation and that didn't help. So I just settled on running stock clocks, which was actually difficult to achieve. I would be very skeptical of anyone telling me this on a forum if it wasn't my first hand experience. 880M is a very odd bird.

Just for clarification I was comparing a single 880M vs. 680M SLI.

Yeah, i guess I was overassuming. The 680m sli appears to be a good 20% faster than the 880M which is pretty good.
@deadsmiley , indeed the 880M can be a real pain in the arse sometimes but when it does work, it's a pretty awesome GPU. I personally love my 880Ms, they work flawlessly in game but do throttle a bit in benchmarks. I wouldn't trade them for the world, too damn precious.
