Mine was past 10k new as well with just 2 GB of RAM. But last month I only got 9100. When did you last run your 3dmark?

    Hi,

I'm thinking about buying one of these awesome-looking m15x machines, and I have a few questions that I hope you current owners out there can help me with...

    1) I cannot decide on LCD choice; I'm thinking about getting the 1440x900 display because I think think it will be brighter and sharper and more readable (isn't 1920x1200 just too tiny for a 15.4" panel, it was pretty tiny on my old 17" Dell XPS M170..?!)... What opinions can you offer on display panel choice..?

    2) Is anyone running Ubuntu on their system, and does all the h/w run, i.e. keyboard lights, GPU switching, etc..?

    3) For the more recent owners, are your systems free from problems reported by initial models..? (e.g. overheating, keyboard flex, etc...)

    Thanks in advance...

    ponx.

I'm definitely sure the keyboard flex issue is gone. My keyboard does not experience that issue and it's been 4 months already. Of course, I can't speak for everyone here but I'm sure the more recent m15x's do not have this issue.

The overheating, on the other hand, has been addressed with the newer versions of the BIOS. BIOS version X34 and X36 have updated fan profiles so they run more faster and more often. If you care about how loud your fans run, X32 BIOS does the job fairly well without the added noise from the fans (that is, if you do not have the extreme processor).

I'd say the 1440x900 display is good enough. I haven't had any problems with it and I definitely did not regret not getting the 1920x1200 display.

I may not be a owner but i recommend the 1440x1200 unless you are buying this system only for gaming.

    1920x1200 on a 15", that's taxing your eyes, isn't it?

I have it on 17", I get used to it after about a week, I found vista is better with the fonts at this tiny size. But at 15", I think you really have to lean forward to read this forum without zoom.
If you have to zoom to read, then what's the point of 1920x1200 ?

Not really, it's fine for me. I'm on WUXGA 15.4" m15x. The real estate kicks *** though.

Yeah, everything works from the start from a fresh install of Ubuntu.

Sound only works when you use the headphone jack.

However, you would have to install GPU drivers. And binary GFX doesn't work too well. It confuses Ubuntu. haha.

Ok, thanks for all that people, it's a real shame I can't see the displays for myself on dislpay in a shop or anything... Though is an even bigger shame they are not offering an LED backlit version of the WXGA+..... :-(

@dhoang417: So when running Ubuntu, what if you installed it with X3100 gfx, then rebooted into Geforce, would xorg crap out...?? Also, do you like the 1440x900 screen you have on yours..?

@Oceanus: Just out of curiosity, when did you get yours..?

@Anyone: Anybody got the 9800GT in theirs..? Does it rock..??

    ponx.

Yeah, that's what I meant, when I said that Ubuntu gets confused when you use binary GFX. You can only install either the Geforce driver or the Intel Gfx, but not both because when you switch graphics mode, the xorg doesn't know which driver to load. So, I just install for one of them.

The 1440x900 is good. I used to have a matte 1900 screen and it made uncomfortably small for me to read. And the colors aren't as vibrant as the clearview of the 1440.

The 9800M GT = 8800M GTX. They're both very strong cards.
