lol, i always wondered why the DIY method was never mentioned with the whole silver m15x discussion. AW makes it fairly easy to take apart the system.

however, i've never asked, does AW void your warranty if you paint it?

That power brick does look on the large side. Any idea if it's the same size as the M1730's? It looks a little flatter, though. I'm hoping that it's smaller.

I wonder who'd win in a fight - a guy armed with the M1730 power block, or one armed with the XBox 360 power block...

 

i wouldn't be shocked if people trying to get refunds on silver m15x skyrockets right now.. along with the 360 view leek and the shots of this that black matte looks TIGHT! i bet it feels good on the hands also now that is a Agrade laptop

 

I know it look cool. I hope mine comes soon. Mine basicly the same setup but has a core 2 2.4 cpu. Next Month I will have my geforce 8800 by the time the laptop comes.

 

those are excellent piccies, well in regards to the size, i'm going to be used to it due to me having a m7700, i actually think the m17x is smaller and lighter than that. hehe!!!

It's not only the same size as the m1730's but it looks like it is the same one.

whats wrong with the touch pad did u put the sticker on it... looks like it has bubbles lol... u should be fine just using teh matte paint as touch pad right?

seems like the motherboard is mounted facing upwards the other way around than the m15x... mabye that was the reason for the delay.?

it seems to have alot less vents on the base than the m15x... all quite interesting indeed

thank god i didn't order the silver m15x i would be kicking my self so hard now that black paint is amazing!

 

And Silver is Sooooo Last Season...?

Mind you it looks cool with the skullcap!

I hope the m17x looks as good with the skullcap and black finish

yer oodle i think SKullcap silver will prob look the most err "aggressive?" of all the options..

personal i would like a skullcap black matte... bit if i can only get rip.. ill go for that i dont think skullcap will show up much with black less shadows reflections etc


the thing that really makes the black matte for me is .. contrast of bright colors against black... and the silver alien head standing out more.. as well as i expect it to feel alot higher quality than a gloss finish on plastic.

the silver attempted to look 2 much like a mac book pro.. imo.. they should have done blue and black or green and black.. mmmmm

Lol I agree about he contracting affect of the Head vs "bodywork", black makes it stand out much more.

I'm not sure about the skullcap for the m17x, i'll wait until i see it, no problem with Ripley though...

Could you imagine having to wait for more colors,lol? At the rate AW moves with changing the color of their notebooks, I would be dead by the time they got blue out,lol

 

hehe yer im not going to wait for bright colors... but they did it with the m9750 so mabye ey?.. mehh blacks good enugh for me lets just hope the alienware network next Tuesday reveals all and shows all notebooks in all colors!

Yeah I put the sticker on it. The matte black does have a very nice feel, but I just dont like the uniform surface.

I am going to take it off now though. After almost 24 hours of using it, I have come to the conclusion that for a 17'' screen at 1920x1200, the touch pad is way too small. So I went to the local compusa and picked up a logitech g5 mouse. I had been eyeing it for a while but not got around to buying it. Now I have hehe.

mmm interesting maybe up the sensitivity of the touch pad for on the road use? the default could be calibrated to 15inch comfort

hehe yer im so superficial.. i almost picked up a m9700 i think it was? in Green this Xmas second hand from the alien ware ebay store.. just because i liked the color and was only playing wow at the time ^_^ mabye once i pickup my m15x and it gets old and scratched ill paint it green my PC case is custom made with golden fan grills and green UV paint on the inside.. mm created in the depths of puberty lawl BLING BLING! kind of wish i had the guts to make my own laptop but components are 2 expensive!

it has quiet a few more ports than the m15x, the best way is to go to the usa alienware site and look at the m17x spec sheets.

Wow, the m17x is much thinner than I expected.
How are the temps and the noise levels?

 

to buy a high end gaming laptop with 8600 cards is like buying a ferrari with the engine of a lexus in it.

 

An extra USB and firewire, and the optical audio and s-video and TV slots... I like. I want it when it comes to the UK lol... if my 'rents release the funds needed. The s-video should help with projecting issues...

I'm assuming that the HDTV plug has an adaptor that you plug your coax into? Or does America use a totally different kind of cable?

What's the difference between headphone and audio-out jacks?

As far as heat and noise...
I dont have any exact temps, but my configuration does not feel like it gets searing. I've been playing World of Warcraft all day on my lap so far, and I havent been burned. It may be hotter on the inside, I'm not sure.

The noise level isnt that bad. Its quieter then a whisper when idle, and under the stress (lol) of WoW, it is somewhat of a louder hum. Nothing headphones will not block out though.

So this DEFINITELY doesn't have the light pipes? Could you try running the patch and see if it is there? I doubt it but maybe...

 

Don't patch what aint broke... The light pipe is NOT on the M17x.

 

Well, I don`t expect it to get hot, we are talking 8600M GTs here. Good to hear it`s quiet!

 

the light pipes are physically not on the m17x so its impossible to get lights around the lcd of the m17x unless you glue some christmas lights on it...

 

lol. i wouldnt be surprised to hear of some AW consumers who really would go that extra mile to get all their "bells and whistles"

No Lethal Lottery. The smart people buy low end and upgrade high end. You tend to save some money and have spare parts if something faulty happens. Oh not to metion if the laptops with the 8800gtx are on back order mybe buying low end will speed up my delivery time.

shoot think two 4gb of ram $100 vs $350 I dont need more then 120gb when the 320gb will be out in the normal market in no time. Total of 440 gb With a option to buy 2 500gb hard drives and leave the stand alone 120gb hard drive.

I am already buying a 8800 gtx before the laptop shows up. Then buying 1 more 8800gtx when I get more money.

One thing I will do is take pictures next to two systems a Pro-Star and Alienware area 51 5550 laptop. One 17 inc one 15 inch.

Your current notebook isn't exactly ugly but i see what you mean, it's not as nice as the m17x... (IMHO)

I presume noone has answered this because they either think it's too obvious, don't care, or don't know.

either way, the fundamental difference is that the audio out jack is unamplified. usually, it's immune to the "master" of the mixer (as this control is usually done by whatever device will be doing the amplification). headphone is for exactly what it says. headphones. audio out would go to a set of speakers.

Can i be a complete pain in the arse and ask for something a little unusual, can you remove one GPU and see if the laptop works? Just trying to find out if it HAS to work in dual sli or if we can use just the one card in it. Cheers
