Or whatever they call them.
Just curious, which one you like the most?
-
Space black... The reason why is because in my opinion it looks great with whatever color you choose to have on your AlienFX theme. I love the Nebula Red but I feel that if I had the red, i'd probrably keep the alienfx theme red permenantly just so it would match. On a positive note the Nebula Red with Alienfx green theme would be quite festive during the winter times!
-
I personally prefer the black color better too but it is because everything else (palmrest, bottom, back) are all black while the silver and red both have black palmrest bottom and back; one solid color appeals to me better than a mix. Plus, black looks more professional.
-
Red red red red red.
did I say red? -
The black is a fingerprint magnet. They show up least in silver. The red is gorgeous. Someone posted several pics of it in multiple angles and I was hooked! Fingerprints don't show up too much in red.
-
I was cautious when i purchased red but let me assure you, any photos you see do not do this color justice. Its really incredible looking. You have to see it to appreciate it.
EDIT: This is what sold me on red. Look around the 2:30 mark -
Red, red, red... RED!
But I prefer black
-
Red here. I almost ordered black, but, after I finally got the machine, red is the only choice for me.
-
Yeah they aren't many pictures that do it justice. It was one beautiful piece of art. When I unpackaged it I just had to hold it and gaze at how gorgeous and vibrant it looked.
Best 100$ spent. -
Indeed, the nebula red looks way better "in the flesh" so to speak. I love it!
-
Red looks the best.
I got black becuase you can never go wrong with the color black though. -
Red looks great, but black works with all the LEG colors.
-
Besides, you can always replace the lid to any color
-
Yes! Mine is black AND silver..

I have Space Black currently. It's nothing to write home about and it does collect fingerprints quite easily. If I could go back and change my M17x I would have chosen Lunar Silver. The Nebula Red looks butt fugly IMO.
-
How much did it cost?
-
I almost got the silver because of the fingerprint issue with black. But silver is such a common color for laptops. To be honest, I was skeptical about the red too, until I opened the box... It's a stunning metallic deep red hue.
-
Red is nice till your mood changes, you might hurl the lappy out if the window one day just because of it
I prefer to stay neutral, especially since I'm spending 70-100 hours per week on this machine. -
That's a lot of fingerprints accumulated on a neutral black machine after 70-100 hours per week. I think seeing that many fingerprints would make me see red, so I'll stick with the nebula red.
-
Personally? Silver. Red. Black. In that order.
I purchased a Lunar Silver m17x when I upgraded from an red XPS m1710.
I prefer the Lunar Silver because I thought it looked a bit classier. Black was a bit plain for me and I considered red but I'd had one for years so decided on something different.
Edit: There's also already a thread on pretty much the same topic here. -
I really like the looks of the red, however before we divorced I bought my ex a red XPS m1530 (which she still has) and I don't want to go down that road.
And besides, I like the uniformity of the Space Black, which I have with my M11X.

I too was on the brink of ordering in black simply as i was thinking "looks more professional", then i thought....hang on a minute....its not like im taking it to a clients home to sit infront of them and discuss figures etc!
That said, it made me change my mind to red - i dont like silver as its too common place (most lappy's that are cheapo's come in silver dont they?) and the black seemed a bit too "stayed" for a gaming laptop - so red it is ......she should be arriving in less than a week so i cant wait to see how it looks in the flesh!
Regarding the Alien FX lighting, as far as i know, arent they all just plain ole black on the inside once the lid is opened? - i mean just cos the lid and a few other bits are red, surely any colour scheme will go with regards to the lights once she is up open and running (unless you wanna run round the back and look from there
)
RED RED RED as youre a long time dead................. -
My older alienware was black and I loved the color but it had a rubbery feel to it and I never really saw any fingerprints. I think the new ones have a different finish.
If I ever get a newer machine it will be red or black. The silver reminds me of the old Dell Inspiron I gave my folks.
Color-scheme doesn't really matter, as the other poster pointed out, the inside is all black.
It would be a toss up for me... Red or Black. -
I've got a nebula red m17xR2 it looks great but im wondering what the black one looks like. We have a cosmic black m11x in the house, its okay ( no nebula red m17x
) But im wondering what the soft touch m11x looks like.
-
I bought it for $200 from Del but I've seen them on ebay for $100.
This is not the common silver you see on laptops. It is a metallic color but that doesn't show through in pics.
I went with black so I could change the color of the lid at anytime and still look like it came that way. -
How can you even think about pulling the screen apart
But i saw your pics, they look good
probably red and black for the next system
-
This thread is useless without a poll. D=
you can find a bunch for less than that even.
$84.99 shipped -
Yes, there has to be a poll.
-
Lunar Silver for me. Cosmic Black is a dull fingerprint magnet, and I'm not a fan of red (Nebula or otherwise...) or wasting money on laptop colors
.
Anyway, Nebula Red does not go with all AlienFX colors, and I like the two-tone effect of a Lunar Silver exterior and black interior. -
Yup, i can't find the right colors for it, so i went with a combination of colors
-
Once you go Cosmic Black you'll never go back.
-
I kinda liked the nebula red but it was too bold for me and I was really afraid of liking it for the first few weeks and then getting bored and biting my fingers with regrets. So black or gray it was, I liked black better.
-
I like the red but for $100 bucks, I rather have the money in my case. So I just went with the place black, since it goes with everything else I have and it's free.
-
I bought it because
1) Red always=faster
2) ATi colors are red
3) *hopefully* Red will make it's resale higher. -
Haha, you're so right. Despite my favorite colour being red, my OCD twisted my arm to go with black because it colour coordinates with everything. But since the inside is black--even on the Nebula Red version--the only section I need to worry about is the front--thanks to the awesomeness of AlienFX that won't be a problem. This now allows me to put some racing striped on the front of it.
Thank you, steviejones133, for making me see the light. -

Black, if they would offer the other colors with the plastic parts in some other color than black I might reconsider but they don't. So it's definitely black. The silver is too light colored it's almost a heavy metallic white viewed at certain angles.

Over here in the UK, there is NO CHARGE to select Nebula Red.....undoubtedly Dell have included the price somewhere else in the build though but def. no charge for the special edition colour scheme -
Have seen nebula red and cosmic black side by side. The black aluminum looks like plastic. The red looks like a high end automobile.
You can't differentiate the plastic from aluminum on the black because they mesh together as there is no contrast between the plastic and aluminum.
The red looks striking 20 feet away. You can see a striking contrast where the aluminum is cut out for the plugs and where the aluminum meets the keyboard.
Striking contrast between red aluminum and peripheral jacks.
Black laptops are a dime a dozen. Red is different than any laptop I have ever seen. The red is brushed so it has a very metalic look to it. The black is very dull. -
Black but the red is a close second. Have a 1710 in red/silver and it's "ok" but black just goes with whatever screen, key colors I haven't to be in the mood for. And a bit of the right polish (since it's aluminum ultimately) should help keep the fingerprints down a bit. We'll see on that.
Kind of curious on two fronts, would be nice if the silver came a tiny bit darker, kind of a deep medium silver would be interesting. And why not blue? Anodized blue in a midtone could be quite stunning, especially since everyone is showing off those Alien FX blue lit setups. I guess colors could get out of control, but a simple black, silver (deeper like the m6500 sort of), red and blue seems to hit the basic primary color sweep.
Just a thought, but still black is something I've always appreciated in my gear, phones, cameras and whatnot. -
I'd definetely go black every time. It gives a look that's far more sophisticated, and in my opinion higher quality.
Plus, black casing goes well with pretty much whatever AlienFX you're using whereas the red might not work as well with some colours. -
That was my thinking when sleey0 was thinking about his m15x getting colowared(where has he dissapeared to btw?), that black or white was the only way to go. But really don't even notice the outside colors all that much.
-
Not to crap in the thread or anything, but I'm going to get my Area-51 m5500 painted white. It's going to look awesome with the black rubberized grips contrasted on the outside lid.
-
Red on my new M17X, wish they would have had blue anodizing.
LeeU -
YES QFT!!!
-
I suspect the blue might be a lot more popular than you'd think on the surface of things. The trick would be to get it to a fairly deep medium blue. Most "cheap" anodized blue alu tends to come out too light. That wouddn't work so well. But if they can get the red that deep color, I suppose a blue could come out the same.
Well food for idle thought anyway. -
The blue that is on Aeroquip fittings would be about right.
LeeU -
A deep blue would be very cool, and, in my opinion, would go with more colors than Lunar Silver.
But, in the case of no blue I would go with Lunar Silver because:
*Red is not my favorite color so no point spending extra $100 for me.
*Photos and video of black make it look like dull plastic.
*Two tone on the m17x can look really cool.
*The inside's going to be black anyways (which I like). -
Red isn't mine either but this shade of red will vblow you away
-
Hahaha, it probably would, but I'd better not think about it too much because I need to save those $100.
If it were free like I hear in the U.K. it is...yes, perhaps then.
