After Google searching for HQ pictures of the silver model, I can see the metallic silver in the paint.
Therefore, for me, I would choose silver to avoid the fingerprints at the expense of the being able to use any color as the alien head against the black lid color.
The red color just screams mug/rob/steal me if you are using it in public places.
Of course, I would like to see a medium-light blue metallic paint option.
-
I wanted the red real bad, but since Im taking this lappy to college it probally stands out too much allready, and I dont want it screaming steal me. So I got black. Its a subtle color that doesn't attract on lookers as much.

Edit: Sorry for the double post, my internet connection is acting up. Admins can you remove this one please. -
Yeah, there is the factor of attracting "too much" attention when carrying around expensive hardware.
And yes agreed on the blue. With blue lighting and the blue alien themes it would look stunning. Lot of people would be in line to get one if it came, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Med blue metallic pic a few pages back... -
Almost every color different to black or silver will get too much attention, its like a price to pay for be kinda different; I order mine in Red too, when i decide to get this machine i though about two things: I don't want weak hardware and i don't want a laptop model "EveryB0dy H4v3 1"; by "fortune" on my country and state laptops like this technically doesn't exist ..
-
I ordered mine in Red. Silver was too plain. Black is too basic.
But you would not catch me driving a red car.
Never liked red cars.
When I first saw the red M17x (3 am in the morning on QVC HD) it was love at first sight. Go figure. -
Red or Silver are two tone against black trim, black is mono tone.
-
}
LOL, same here, i will never drive a red car
Ps: My ETA its 09/07, really close to your own
-
What QVC sell's Alienwares? I would have never guessed that LOL. How much was the system they were selling and what type of specs, if you remember? Just curious to know haha.
-
Yeah, but you will get yours first.
I hope everything goes smoothly with your laptop delivery.
They were real basic laptops.
QVC was not offering the I7 mobile processor at the time.
They may still have them on their website.
I did go over to take a peek. I think I got a better deal from Dell.
Or for a giggle check out what Amazon offers. -
Once my warranty expires I'm thinking of getting mine painted that awesome blue I saw pictured earlier in this thread.
Once I get back to HI I'm sending my m5500 off to get it painted white. It's going to look really cool contrasted with those black rubberized grips.
-
My blue is awesome?
-
Your blue rocketh!!
-
Metallic blue would be better.
-
I think all the colors are slightly metallic judging by the flash pics of each. The red and silver clearly exhibits slight flecks that tell me it's a metallic and some of the black ones seem to show it too. Perhaps it's a trick of the light so I'll stand corrected if someone says I'm wrong

The nebula red definetly has a metallic look to it....its not solid block colour as it looks kind of different from different angles....it really does look nice (even if i do say so myself as i chose that colour!) -
persoanlly i think spending 100 dollars on a color is the biggest waste of money on a laptop period. People are always complaining about xxx proc for +100-200 not worth it for the small mhz bump but then they go and spend +100 for a color which does absolutely nothing for your performance. I'd much rather + 100 for +130mhz then +100 for +0mhz and a color
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Yeah i agree but as its free in the uk, why the heck not have it
-
the3vilGenius 3vil knows no fear
Yes its free in most country. Also not everyone is all about performance. I would pay 100 more for a color that i like, if im gonna spen 3K on something it better look the best it can look. but thats different for everyone i geuss
-
Exactly, your already paying a few thousand for a laptop. You better be dang happy with it.
-
Yeah, it'd be so much easier though if we could see the colors in person to know for certain which we'd be happiest with. -
So now we need to have color samples orderable from Dell?
-
The Dell website needs to show high quality pictures of the various alienware models in the different colors. I had to Google search in order to see the metallic paint that people in this thread said existed on the silver model. Looking at the Dell website shows a dull gray/silver.

Well we do have the return policy
-
can we have some pics of the Lunar shadow please? And if someone has already posted some, please link me to them. I can't find them anywhere for the life of me.
Have done google search, but the images are too small/ marketing stuff. Not much to go by.
Thanks. -
13 pages and not one photo
-
Black, keeps the "OEM" look and also looks better with alienFX imo...
-
There are some gorgeous photos of the black here.

@tigerwhistle
Thanks for the link. Awesome pics. Any pointers on the lunar shadow ??? -
I have the Red, It does look awesome, almost too much so.
Everytime I take it out I feel I am making myself a target for a pinched laptop lol - Everyone notices this beast
-
pmassey31545 Whats the mission sir?
Black! Kinda reminds me of a Stealth bomber (or UFO).
-
Thanks for the link
-
Well, I have the Lunar shadow and I definitely like it. The AlienFX colors don't matter because when the laptop is opened and you're on it, you shouldn't be seeing more than a small silver border and the rest is black. The only thing it should maybe affect is what color you decide to make the outer alienhead (It is linked to the inner alienhead power button by the way).
So I think if you like a color, don't let yourself think "AlienFX compatibility" is a reason not to get it. I nearly thought it was myself, but that's because the AW website has all the models on a 3/4 view, when you have it on a desk it won't be.
No problem, though the real help is Luci5r because he took all those nice quality pics.
-
@ ^^
Can you post a couple of pics of the lunar shadow please? Just 3-4 will be enough -
Definitely would like to see some lunar shadow pics as well.
-
Black. Hands down the best. Red seeking too much attention. Black is stealthy and sleek (besides being a fingerprint magnet). Red is too much "look at me".
-
Well, this video was what made me decide Lunar Silver was cool.
YouTube - New M17x -
@TigerWhistle
Looks really cool. But I doubt if lunar silver and lunar shadow is the same thing. Shadow seems to be a little bit grayish. You said you have a lunar shadow right? -
That silver is absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the video, probably just convinced me to get that color for my M15x.
-
Oh, whoops. Sorry about that. Lunar Shadow is for the m15x and Lunar Silver is for the m17x. I got an m17x so I have Lunar silver. I am not sure but yes, I do think the coloring options are a bit different. (I keep forgetting, but I do think that the name changes for a reason.)
I'm glad Piscian pointed it out, but you'd probably best check out some photos of what the m15x's Lunar Shadow looks like.
It's probably because for the m17x it's all anodized aluminum, and since for the m15x it does not say so, I'm assuming it must be plastic?
Did a quick look and here's an okay vid for getting a good glimpse. Nothing near as good as the m17x video though.
YouTube - Unboxing the Alienware M15x (Around 3:30 to 4:00 there's some okay glimpses.) -
Yes, the silver in the M15x and M17x don't look the same.
-
not plastic but magnesium-alloy
i chose the silver myself because i wanted the 2tone effect while not restricting myself in the colours i would use for the lights.
otherwise i would have gone red. -
I dunno, judging by that video they posted they look the same to me. I hadn't really seen any great shots of the Silver color at all, and although I know the material is different for the M17x and the M15x, I can't see a difference noticeable enough to make me reconsider.
-
When I order mine next month I'm going to go Nebula Red. To me the silver looks a bit generic (too similar to a MacBook, and I'm an Apple anti-fan), and the black sounds like it's a major fingerprint magnet. (Red is also a free option in NZ.)
I don't think that the red will clash with the AlienFX colours - as others have said, the red is on the outside and the inside bit you look at is black. And I don't mind the attention - I'm going to be taking the beast to LAN gaming tournaments and the machine is designed to be shown off. -
I'm going with Nebula red with my M17x. Reasons: I'm a brunette and red is my color, lol! Just teasing. I think it's flashy and looks great.

i just got my M15x in cosmic black and i think it looks great. i have heard that the black is a fingerprint magnet, but im not to concerned. thats what microfiber cloth is for.
ive seen silver and i actually thought it looked a little bland, and red is a bit too over the top for me (plus, i think i was better off putting the $100 into a component).
plus, with the black, any color scheme works well and nothing looks weird. i dont regret my choice at all. actually, i think id be happy with any of the three options. -
Wait your power cable attaches on the side?
-
I like the Nebula Red best.
Then the Cosmic Black. -
It's an m15x so I guess it's just like that? (Took me a moment to realize for myself and I wondered if the m17x had two power slots.)
EDIT:
I went through the old thread for this ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/388278-alienware-m17x-black-silver.html), and found the posts with the image links since there were quite a few there (with less overall pages too, hmmm).
I think a lot of these are for the m17x though.

Update about my Nebula Red. This thing attracts ALOT of fingerprints. Have to clean it every day, but that's the price you pay for beauty.
