Yea 1440p would be fine too lol. Just saying won't be gaming at 4k due to the limitations of the card. It's so hard when both options are good options and I WANT IT ALL GOD DAMNIT lol

For these 15 inch models, it may be lack of enough of panels. I have read that most of the hardware manufacturers as screen manufacturers and the like, are unable to produce enough. There are a couple of articles on this theme on the internet. I have also posted this in the forum. But I can't find it now :(

This is correct. All brands buy from 4 screenbrands (LG, AUO and Samsung, and sharp) and their stock is limited.

So the point is that they are limiting the cpu options because they know no one will actually buy them as they do not really have any stock of gsync panels. However, I thought the wait for the gsync was for certification and they have been sitting on inventory.

Anyone have any experience with 2242 SSDs? Looking to add one to the 15 once I get around to buying it.

There only two reasons i can see for the cpu limitations. They either dont have enough 6820k's or they figure the market who is willing to pay extra for it is willing to pay even more for the top of line version. Im thinking it more of the second option, i really feel like its a "well if you want the best, you need to spend the cash and buy the best" mentality. They went from pretty much letting you pick whatever combo you wanted, to locking certain features behind a certain model with upgrades you might not want but now need to buy to get a certain feature you want.

Except they are not letting you buy the best. The product is a gaming laptop. The best configuration is the gsync monitor with the 1070 and the k series. I would understand if it is limited to the gsync monitor which is the best monitor they offer but they are only offering the k series with the **** UHD crap which is not for gaming.

    Just ordered the AW15
    i7-6700HQ
    16GB DDR4 at 2400MHz
    1070 nvidia
    15.6 FHD 120hz gsync

I haven't owned a gaming pc in a long while, I'm hoping to play battlefield 1 with good framerate at high settings.

Once we get the latest Nvidia drivers, you will play battlefield 1 with good framerate but in ULTRA settings not just high settings ^^.

Will get mine tomorrow Yay finally :D

Its good to hear this. I had concerns the cpu might not be strong enough at ultra and will bottleneck. The dell site doesnt allow the 120hz monitor used with the top cpu unfortunately.

    Congrats on the purchase

Thanks :), Do not worry about the cpu bottlenecking, very very few games will be bottlenecked by it on top of my head : Total war : warhammer, Flight simulator X/Prepar3D 3.0, and really specific games that have a very specific optimization and resource management. ALL games focus on the GPU and not on the CPU, even for physics calculation now, and even if that's not the case the 6700HQ is plenty powerful.

You would only get marginal increase in performance with the 6820 stock tbh. It would only matter a lot if you overclocked it and, and this is only my opinion here, overclocking on a laptop is not ideal I'd say. The thermals would go ballistic and that in turn will negatively impact product life, especially the battery.

Looks like my suspicion about the G-Sync panels requiring a different motherboard might be true: https://twitter.com/aw_umar/status/788360798129098752

Also, Umar being a little cryptic, but I'm guessing they're going to be announcing Kaby Lake soon: https://twitter.com/aw_umar/status/788360044916019200

In other news, I finally ordered one last night. Found there were some errors in the Australian configuration tool that made it relatively cheap (for instance, 8GB 2667MHz RAM costs $100 less than 8GB 2133, and the 256GB SSD costs $100 less than 128GB), combined with negotiating 10% off with a sales rep, so I got the following:

    6700HQ
    2x8GB 2667MHz
    GTX 1070
    256GB NVMe + 1TB
    99Wh battery
    120Hz G-Sync 400 nits 1080p screen

Came to $2835 AUD. Estimated delivery is Nov 2.

I was originally going to wait for an unlocked CPU, but basically figured that without the savings above the 6820HK would end up costing ~$600 more, which just isn't worth it to me. And I don't expect Kaby Lake to be available for at least a couple of months, with likely minimal improvement, so I'm happy enough with the 6700HQ.

Edit: Looks like I jumped in at the right time - overnight they've fixed the configuration tool and the build I spec'd up now costs over $600 more.

Depends, some thermal pads can leave sticky residue behind when removed, others are a pliable material that doesn't adhere but just acts as a sticky putty almost. Not sure which kind this would be.

for ssd you can just buy cheap ebay pads and it doesn't leave a sticky residue, only a very thin layer of oil (this is used to conduct heat)

easily clean off by just a dry tissue, maybe bit of alcohol if you want to be 100% sure

I'll be coming off a Macbook Retina display to this Alienware tn 120hz screen. i am praying the colours aren't as washed out as other screens I've had over the years.

I know refresh rate is big in fps gaming but colour reproduction is important as well

I rate colour reproduction and how well it maintains the image at various angles to be my highest concern, if I want an amazing screen I'll generally plug in something externally

You should read the last ~10 pages, all infos of the AW 13 have been already discussed.

It will be released on November 1st, shipped with quad core CPUs (most likely Skylake i5) and maybe Kaby Lake ULV dual cores. The top-end GPU will be the 1060 (no infos of the RAM amount or shaders yet) and probably on the low-end configs with the 1050 (TI).

My Alienware 13 OLED has 0 burn in, but I also employ a few extra techniques: Nothing in the background, trash can hacked into the start menu, start menu that auto hides, backgrounds that change every so often

    New AW 17 Pascal owners?

Please do a thorough and honest temperature/FPS test once you get your rigs dialed in ... 1080p and 1440p models both ... pretty sure I'll be going with the 1440p 17" AW but have yet to see and in depth and detailed discussion of temps ...

    Thanks!

And the screen is good too ? Do you have 1080p or uhd ?

Random question: How easy is it to upgrade SSDs/HDDs on the new Alienware 15? Does it void your warranty if you try? I've been back and forth on this and the Sager, and with the 10% off coupon that just came out for the AW, it makes getting this a bit easier, especially since i really want the 120hz screen. But storage is incredibly expensive on this, so I'm curious if I could upgrade the M.2 or the HDD without voiding the warranty. Does anybody know?

my 4k 15r3 is set to arrive next week and i was so excited to get a quality 4k display with 99% adobeRGB but now this...

btw if Mobius 1 is reading this, can you pm me about dell's return policy wrt restocking fee and return shipping? thanks!

Might depend on region, but certainly for Australia (and AFAIK everywhere) it does not void your warranty, and is relatively easy. Dell even provides a video themselves to show end users how to do it.

Restocking fees are easy to talk out of. Just say you are returning to buy the same model with a different LCD.
If they give you trouble then complain about something, like the LCD being inferior.
