If it's a really good laptop I wouldn't mind it gone, as you said an adaptor or external reader will do the job, in the end it's all about weighting the pros and cons
but thing with the new AWs (and many latest laptops in general), USB-A ports are getting lesser. There's only 2 on the new AWs, 1 for a keyboard if you prefer that, and another for a mouse. You're left with the USB-C, which again you will need to get an adaptor.

From 17R2 . Blu-ray dvd recorder EXTERNAL. From 17R4 SD card reader EXTERNAL. From 17R5 ??? EXTERNAL Keyboard or EXTERNAL display? It is laptop or what?
-
The new Alienware 13 looks promising--gtx 1060 + quad core CPU (if details on their fb are accurate).
Just wondering how heavy it's going to be. Hoping it's less or equal to the previous gen models weight.

Same here. Because I transfer large amounts of data from very capable SD cards, a USB C adapter has been more more practical.

I saw the new 15 and 17 today at PAX West. I got to play on them both. I own a 15r2 touch screen and I will be purchasing the new 17 on September 30th!

I never said I wanted or needed a 1080. I planned on ordering the 1070.

About the SDcard reader phasing out, Seems like normal but nope It's the same Industry's fallacy & tactics to "Slim", the removal of Express slot, ODD. Soon we might loose the USB Type A followed by 3.5mm jack, iPhone 7
Don't try to get it first, wait for the reviews to pour in.

Oh wow you actually still want an ODD in your laptop? I am glad they removed that. More space for a battery. The last time I used a disc is years ago.
-
I am chill. just surprised someone actually cared for that.
-
Have you touched them? The marterial quality are good?
-
I was initially upset that they got rid of the ODD but after not having used them in years, good riddance. I wonder when they will start selling Alienwares without HDD and only with several M.2 SSDs (Next alienware refresh). That change I would welcome since thats one of the biggest remaining component on the computer than can go. Would save weight, size and battery life.
One issue I have with my Alienware M14x is that they used some kind of rubber top surface as a palm rest. Not good for cleaning since dust sticks to it and its very difficult to clean. Also the rubber wears out more quickly. Wonder what they are using on the new ones. -
Question, Is it noticeable that the new AW17 look slimmer than the previous AW?

I'd be all over a quadcore 13 with OLED. I'd sell my x51r3 to get that and go down to 1 device.

I'm sure someone is ready for a minor fail review of the new models and jump on Alienware with a blink of an eye. Their hate is real.

I know PAX is noisy, but did you game anything, and did you hear some fans spinning high?
-
I feel like the new AW15 has potential to be, by far, the best gaming laptop this gen.
Biggest question for me is the cooling. If it can keep the GTX 1070 cool and do so without making too much noise, then AW has my money. -
-
I'm just not convinced that going thinner was worth it.
AORUS uses the same design, and they're not exactly cool cucumbers.iunlock likes this. -

I did game briefly on two of the 17s and one of the 15s and didn't notice any fan noise at all, but there was as you say significant background noise.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
It does look slimmer but I didn't really pick it up to notice any weight difference.

I did touch them to check the typing and quality build and they are the same as the current models though not quite as thick feeling if that makes sense.

i tried to ask them via twitter about the temperatures of the aw15/17 and if the heatsink is again the same in both models but shortened in length for the 15. Does some1 have more "intel" on that?
-
Wow. A thread with very little input from the naysayer camp on the next gen of Alienwares.
Struck gold here.
I don't mind the aesthetic change if it means lowers temps and quieter fan noise to accompany that. It looks more retro in terms of laptop design.
Those new screens have amazing specs on paper but I still don't see much difference against my current.
Perhaps they need to be seen in person for full appreciation.
Anyone have any idea on pricing?hmscott likes this. -

No HDMI input again? Shame i loved that about my M17x R4.
-
They are still quite thicker than the Aorus laptops. Better build as well from what I can see now.
-
There will be a lot more metal in the new refresh, hence thinner yet heavier.

I actually agree want an optical drive as well. I still use discs as I prefer a physical copy of things I buy. If it's available on disc, I buy it on disc. There are still some of us who want a disc drive.
In addition, I still have another 1500 CD's I need to rip and back up. Kinda need a drive for that. -
Clearly the focus here is cooling, their press report emphasizes on the new cooling system that has to take extra space in the back.
So no don't judge the cooling based on aorus which is slimmer and has a weaker cooling system
.
-
What are the odds that the AW 13 will have a quad core CPU?
-
It will probably get a 7500U, still hoping for a real quad core though.
-
This might be the laptop for me, doesn't look like there are comparable laptops which offer option of 99.5whr battery. Now for gaming I know battery is probably useless as you'll likely be plugged in, however, although the 15inch is pretty heavy, might consider using it as a daily driver for work (or do you guys think that is just impossible given its size).
Now, to decide if I want to just go FHD (to make sure I can run my games at 120fps and forgo any scaling issues when using as daily driver), or risk QHD for the sharper screen...
Am I missing something? This surely is a better offering to anything Gigabyte, Aorus, MSI or Sager/Clevo are offering spec for spec right?
Shame we won't have kabylake in time, but what can you do :/. -
I really hope Alienware will start using some high quality thermal paste since they claim the rest of their tech is top notch.
Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkDeeX likes this. -
I will gryzzly cosmonaut or IC7 mine I think. Never trusted generic thermal paste, it's crazy how changing something that cheap can have so much impact
-
How difficult is it to change the thermal paste on Alienwares laptops. I have assembled desktops and dismantled my laptop but didn't mess with the cpu, gpu and heat sink in the laptop till now. I am hoping I will be able to change the paste to something better when I get the new one.

While we're on thermal options, have been using mx4 for quite a while now with decent results.
Is there a huge difference in Temps going with the grizzly option?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk -
Few degrees I'd say.
-
Nothing special then. Might try it on next repaste. Thanks.

Mx4 will last you as long as mayonnaisePapusan and CaerCadarn like this.

Haha, have actually read that today.

As mentioned above, it is funny how something so cheap has such a vital role in a build.Last edited by a moderator: Sep 12, 2016 -
I used MX4 before and changed to TG Kryonaut. Got a reduction of 17°C out of the box! IC Diamond will perform similarly, maybe better if the heatsink doesn't make proper contact.
-
ICD is better for heatsink that's severely warped, like Clevo's for example...
Kryonaut perform similarly (if not marginally better) compared to ICD on a flat mounting surface.Papusan, Rairch and CaerCadarn like this. -
Great info thank you both. Kryo seems the best bet then.

How's liquid metal? Heard it's difficult to install and can short the electronics if not done properly?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
It's wonderful and if you're wanting the best of the best then it's a given that you'll have to take extra precautions in doing it right. (Click on "6820HK" in my signature to be linked to a thread with lots of liquid metal info.)
If this is your first time repasting, I wouldn't recommend liquid metal; instead opt for GELID Exteme which is excellent. Lots of room for error....actually it's pretty fail proof. Squeeze the whole tube for sufficient coverage and draw a smiley face all over the mobo as that'll gain you an extra -10C in cooling.

Still pretty much the same news, expect that it's more concrete that the AW17R4 GTX 1080 will be 180W...so full throttle..
Let's just hope the new design can keep it cool.
