I misunderstood the message at first. I thought the 6cell was the smallest one (6vs8 cell). I guess they make a lower cost version similar to the XPS15 which had similar offerings. I still dont get why this is a problem though. Since you get the options. You can choose how you want your system. Also from what I saw in a video where they disassembled one of those machines. The chassis seems to be top notch. No other brand apart from Asus can offer that at this time.
I was at IFA last week and I could see a lot of gaming laptops (Acer, Aorus, Gigabyte, XMG (Clevo)) and the majority of these laptops felt just incredibly cheap. This is one of the main reasons why I buy Alienware, the chassis quality just feels good, no flex, good materials, no plain plastics etc. The new line certainly looks to up that game with beefier cooling. The ideal combination between performance and actually being a laptop.

Although Dell will offer a cheap entry package like their other models, I can not see a single reason not to offer or use a unlocked i7-6820, (1070) with the smaller battery package. The only disadvantage with a smaller battery beside the battery life, is perhaps that this smaller battery can't tolerate use of a possible hybrid bios functionality.
If you looked in the review of the new Acer with 6700Hq + 1070, you could see that this machine had a power usage up to +-223W. This with stock gpu, and all know 6700Hq can't be overclocked. -

I would much prefer if the AMD graphics is the RX480, not the RX470...
Remember that RX mobile = polaris, and R5/7/9 mobile = rebrand -
But the RX470 IMO is a total waste to even offer in a new refresh... -
...that's scary, did you know that for instance the Asus ROG GL502 drains from the battery WHILE being plugged to the 180W PSU (I know it's weak) ? So when you're playing, if your battery is depleted the performance will drop, and your battery life epectancy will be greatly reduced if that's the case.
So I hope the 1070 will not drain from the PSU + Battery -
Of course they prefer to sell you a new expensive battery package right after the warranty expired for the battery.

(i.e. the power system while plugged in will not be dependent on the battery for power.)

Guess we will never know until we get our hands on the machine though.wickette, CaerCadarn and iunlock like this. -
Can anybody translate the video from this page: http://de.ubergizmo.com/2016/09/13/alienware-15-17-hands-on-video.html
Best I can tell watching with no sound is that the guy really likes to fondle AW laptops from top to bottom. He likes em little and big. Well that's my version of his video, how far off am I?

Not saying it doesnt wear out your battery faster. But it is not like it would die in a month. -
Let just hope AW won't pull us the famous no man's sky multiplayer prank...when they promise something and then roll back.Last edited: Sep 16, 2016 -

It is probably just a config option - as I am sure they make these in mass in factories in a certain way - to cut costs they probably have made it this way.
Similar to how in the UK, I can't order an XPS 13 with 16gb ram without going for QHD -
The XPS 15, I can't order with the bigger battery (unless refurb) without the QHD screen - again makes no sense other than from a cost perspective. - and some other combinations, are not available for no technical reason - but simply to cut costs for Dell. Too many options/customization points add costs to Dell right?
I am sure they thought, people who go for the more powerful components, may aswell get the bigger battery so - when not on AC, there battery life is comparable to those on the smaller one with weaker components. Makes sense to me?DarkKnight919, rinneh and micman like this. -
I could not open the configurator. I want to see the prices. Curious.
Link me the configurator -
The page was taken down. For the time being, most likely.

Also, if they offer 1080, how much additional would that be? $600

Nothing on 15 or GTX 1080 (since the GTX 1080 would be an option in November most likely).

Never expected Alienware to be the one chasing thinness. Will be interesting to see if the 17 can adequately cool a 1080.
I'd also like to have it confirmed if the 120Hz is a TN or IPS. -

About the only thing new is getting an under the skirt peek at the bottom of the new design.

The 13 is a complete waste of time and money, if it's still running ULV processors, or dual cores at all really.

I'm looking to get a new laptop, and it seems Alienware has now reached the top of my interest list, as they seem to be the only one offering a 15" machine with a 120hz panel.
Does anyone know when these will be available for purchase? -

Hey,
just came around this youtube video showing the barebone in mighty 4K ^^ : (it's from Germany)
The guy is saying september 30th so I guess European will also be able to order the AW15/17 on that date, we'll see.
The chassis looks more bulkier than I thought but still it's sclearly well built and that cooling system looks quite strong ! -

I just find it strange that IPS isn't in any of the marketing, or on the official page, of Dell's own site. It will be interesting to see who is making the screens.
Does Dell still sell parts? I'd love to buy one of this 1440p/120Hz screen for my own use, if it turns out to be of high quality. -
They sell parts, but don't expect to buy them in the first couple of months when the laptop line launches.

Noob question. The 4k screen, how's the input lag for gaming? I play Street Fighter V so that's important.

I game at 1440p...IMO 4K gaming is not the best choice for notebook gaming as you'll get the best of both worlds at 1440p. 4K up until Pascal wasn't practical due to hardware limitations.
Most people are OK with 60fps...however, my very minimum acceptable fps is 100fps. Anything below that is like 30fps to me.
::iunlock:: -
So the best screen I should get is the 120hz then? I just want best of both worlds. -
Input lag varies person to person, @DeeX can't stand the 25ms even from the 1080p -
Also, what's the input lag for the 120hz version?

However, I can say that the overall game play and results are the same for me.
