I misunderstood the message at first. I thought the 6cell was the smallest one (6vs8 cell). I guess they make a lower cost version similar to the XPS15 which had similar offerings. I still dont get why this is a problem though. Since you get the options. You can choose how you want your system. Also from what I saw in a video where they disassembled one of those machines. The chassis seems to be top notch. No other brand apart from Asus can offer that at this time.
I was at IFA last week and I could see a lot of gaming laptops (Acer, Aorus, Gigabyte, XMG (Clevo)) and the majority of these laptops felt just incredibly cheap. This is one of the main reasons why I buy Alienware, the chassis quality just feels good, no flex, good materials, no plain plastics etc. The new line certainly looks to up that game with beefier cooling. The ideal combination between performance and actually being a laptop.
-
Yes you can configure how you want your system. I can see this...
Although Dell will offer a cheap entry package like their other models, I can not see a single reason not to offer or use a unlocked i7-6820, (1070) with the smaller battery package. The only disadvantage with a smaller battery beside the battery life, is perhaps that this smaller battery can't tolerate use of a possible hybrid bios functionality.
If you looked in the review of the new Acer with 6700Hq + 1070, you could see that this machine had a power usage up to +-223W. This with stock gpu, and all know 6700Hq can't be overclocked. -
It's a complete JOKE to even have AMD as an option at the same price of the GTX 1060? That's another one added to the joke tank lol...who buys AMD? Like really...eh...Kids...
Either it's their à la carte strategy to make more money....another example is their new extended warranty pricing....what in the world? That's just complete madness.Last edited: Sep 14, 2016 -
I would much prefer if the AMD graphics is the RX480, not the RX470...
Remember that RX mobile = polaris, and R5/7/9 mobile = rebrand -
Yea that'd be a tough one as a RX480 would change things up a lot compared to a 1060. On paper the RX480 looks slightly better specs wise, especially in the TDP department, but with real world performance the 1060 still edges the RX480. Tough call though. Heck, one benefit would be having a much wider range in monitors to choose from as they all seem to be FreeSync. Annoying I know...
But the RX470 IMO is a total waste to even offer in a new refresh... -
...that's scary, did you know that for instance the Asus ROG GL502 drains from the battery WHILE being plugged to the 180W PSU (I know it's weak) ? So when you're playing, if your battery is depleted the performance will drop, and your battery life epectancy will be greatly reduced if that's the case.
So I hope the 1070 will not drain from the PSU + Battery -
Same **** in Msi and AW as well. A so called Battery Boost aka Hybrid bios. A Crippled design because some OEM's go cheapo or decide what is best for you and your hardware
Of course they prefer to sell you a new expensive battery package right after the warranty expired for the battery.

Reps confirmed in chat this will not have a "hybrid bios".
(i.e. the power system while plugged in will not be dependent on the battery for power.)
Mark was involved in the chat.
Guess we will never know until we get our hands on the machine though.wickette, CaerCadarn and iunlock like this. -
Can anybody translate the video from this page: http://de.ubergizmo.com/2016/09/13/alienware-15-17-hands-on-video.html
Best I can tell watching with no sound is that the guy really likes to fondle AW laptops from top to bottom. He likes em little and big. Well that's my version of his video, how far off am I?

Such talk will hit back hard if Dell and Azor retry Hybrid bios in the new Echo models. It does not bode well when Dell does not want to offer buyers the more powerful 6820 and 1070 with the weaker battery. There is no reason to block such an option in their hardware configuration. Whether the desire to steal more money from you or... You know.
-
They probably have 2 versions of the chassis. Not need to think of conspiracy theories. They offerthe small battery version for really cheap.
-
It's a solid hypothesis, after all the CPU are soldered. I really really hope the won't put hyprid power this is so dangerous for the battery pack it will start to die after 1 month Oo...and changing your battery,...it's not free !
-
Its not that dramatic at all. That hybrid power thing (aka just a too small power supply) just ment that under maximum full load the powersupply was just a few watts shy and thus some juice from the battery was being used. It doesnt suddenly kill your battery, Express charging however did more damage to the battery unfortunately in combination with hybrid bios.
Not saying it doesnt wear out your battery faster. But it is not like it would die in a month. -
Ok thanks for the heads-up, I never saw hybrid power in action, all my past laptops had a sufficiently robust PSU ^^.
Let just hope AW won't pull us the famous no man's sky multiplayer prank...when they promise something and then roll back.Last edited: Sep 16, 2016 -
If you dont use your notebbook on battery at all it is not dramatic, but let me tell you this: When i got my Lenovo Y700 last year in oktober the battery would last ~4 hours on video playback. Now i can barely watch 1 movie (~1,5 hours) before i have to connect the PSU. I would not buy any notebook that drains battery while plugged in.Papusan likes this.

A larger killer of laptop batteries is heat. My old GIgabyte lost a lot of it sbattery health within 2 months of use because it got so hot while gaming. The temps where around 95c under full load. THe battery was next to the heatsinks. Terrible design. Anyway, after 9 months of use my Alienware 15 R2 has 1.8% battery wear, But I have this since day one. Around 20 cycles.

It is probably just a config option - as I am sure they make these in mass in factories in a certain way - to cut costs they probably have made it this way.
Similar to how in the UK, I can't order an XPS 13 with 16gb ram without going for QHD -
The XPS 15, I can't order with the bigger battery (unless refurb) without the QHD screen - again makes no sense other than from a cost perspective. - and some other combinations, are not available for no technical reason - but simply to cut costs for Dell. Too many options/customization points add costs to Dell right?
I am sure they thought, people who go for the more powerful components, may aswell get the bigger battery so - when not on AC, there battery life is comparable to those on the smaller one with weaker components. Makes sense to me?DarkKnight919, rinneh and micman like this. -
I could not open the configurator. I want to see the prices. Curious.
Link me the configurator -
The page was taken down. For the time being, most likely.

Did they show AW15?
Also, if they offer 1080, how much additional would that be? $600

Nothing on 15 or GTX 1080 (since the GTX 1080 would be an option in November most likely).

Never expected Alienware to be the one chasing thinness. Will be interesting to see if the 17 can adequately cool a 1080.
I'd also like to have it confirmed if the 120Hz is a TN or IPS. -

About the only thing new is getting an under the skirt peek at the bottom of the new design.

The 13 is a complete waste of time and money, if it's still running ULV processors, or dual cores at all really.
-
IPS, Confirmed

I'm looking to get a new laptop, and it seems Alienware has now reached the top of my interest list, as they seem to be the only one offering a 15" machine with a 120hz panel.
Does anyone know when these will be available for purchase? -
Sept 30th but no details on the panels yet so crossing our fingers the panels are available at launch.
-
Hey,
just came around this youtube video showing the barebone in mighty 4K ^^ : (it's from Germany)
The guy is saying september 30th so I guess European will also be able to order the AW15/17 on that date, we'll see
.
The chassis looks more bulkier than I thought but still it's sclearly well built and that cooling system looks quite strong ! -

don't understand it at all , but just watching the video of the new design got me drooling.
" Dell Internal Use only " ....love the label lolssj92 likes this. -
luckily i can understand german. Overall he just spoke about the specs. That it has become 30% thinner but a bit longer for the cooling. The availability of thr gpus and the large battery.Rengsey R. H. Jr. likes this.

Confirmed, where?
-
Via several AW staff during the launch event that had live chat. One was the lead in marketing and one was head of R&D.
-
I just find it strange that IPS isn't in any of the marketing, or on the official page, of Dell's own site. It will be interesting to see who is making the screens.
Does Dell still sell parts? I'd love to buy one of this 1440p/120Hz screen for my own use, if it turns out to be of high quality. -
They sell parts, but don't expect to buy them in the first couple of months when the laptop line launches.
-
Noob question. The 4k screen, how's the input lag for gaming? I play Street Fighter V so that's important.
Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk -
Around ~23-25ms, but it works pretty well. I play FPS games on my 4K auo all the time. Zero issues. That's just me though.
::iunlock:: -
Can you go 1080p to reduce lag? Is it also possible 1080p 120hz?
Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk -
No the 4K screens if lucky can only go upto 75Hz, but it's rare.
I game at 1440p...IMO 4K gaming is not the best choice for notebook gaming as you'll get the best of both worlds at 1440p. 4K up until Pascal wasn't practical due to hardware limitations.
Most people are OK with 60fps...however, my very minimum acceptable fps is 100fps. Anything below that is like 30fps to me.
::iunlock:: -
So the best screen I should get is the 120hz then? I just want best of both worlds. -
Yea
Input lag varies person to person, @DeeX can't stand the 25ms even from the 1080p -
Can you go 1440p on that screen?
Also, what's the input lag for the 120hz version?
Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk -
Though I do notice a difference in game play from my 4K Samsung monitor (1ms) vs the 4K laptop monitor (~25ms)...it could be the size and perception from a big screen to a small one...
However, I can say that the overall game play and results are the same for me.
::iunlock:: -
People that claim that above 60fps there os not difference annoy me to no end. 100mhz and above is so much more smooth. Even from 144hz to 165 i can perceive a difference.
-
120hz /5ms iirc
