It's common knowledge that many Dell techs have no idea what they're talking about at the best of times, let alone before a product launch where information is being intentionally withheld internally. Of course they'll get Ivy Bridge.

i7-3610QM - $0; no price change from SB
    i7-3720QM - $150
    i7-3820QM - $350
    i7-3920XM - $900

Wow! I'm impressed at the low prices! The 3820QM is $150 lower than I expected!

I chatted with Dell at 7:05 this morning. Here are two quotes from the Dell rep:

"i understand what you would like to acquire however we do not do upgrade on processor. what you can do is to return the system that you bought and then order a new one with the newer processor."

"i apologize if you were informed like that but to tell you honestly, we actually dont info on upcoming updates on our system. so the rep might not have explained it well but we really don't have info say, new update will be coming."

Today at 7:55 AM, from the Direct2Dell Blog:

"While there’s a lot to be excited about with these new laptops, I’ve saved the best for last. Those who’ve ordered one of these three updated laptops and whose orders haven’t shipped yet, we’ll be upgrading your processors from second generation Intel Sandy Bridge processors to a comparably-priced third generation Ivy Bridge processor automatically!"

Wow, they didn't increase the prices at all. I think I'm going to order one.

I'm still having a hard time deciding between the M17x with 7970m and a desktop with a 7870, but the overall cost ends up being more or less the same if I take into account the M17x coming with Win7, a built-in UPS, and a built-in 2nd monitor...

Interestingly, as of 8:30 AM CST neither the rep I chatted with or the rep I spoke with on the phone knew anything about an upgrade to the third generation processor. They both told me that it's not official unless it's on the dell.com website. They both told me that my order would be shipped with the second generation processor and that I needed to cancel my order and place a new order to receive the new processor. I'm assuming that the news hasn't trickled down to them yet, so I'm going to trust Bill and Direct2Dell and give them a little more time.

    A little bit disappointed here:
So much noise about today and basically nothing happend so far.
I mean M18X-R2 = M18X-R1 with IvyBridge and maybe in summer with 7870 or 680s.
So what was the big anouncement. What are the changes of the M18X-R2 besides Ivy and nextgen GPUs. No new screens (RPG, 16:10), no new design, no new innovative cooling system,.... - whats really new about M18X-R2 besides the CPU and GPU upgrade???
    Did I miss something???

i'm also waiting to get the confirmation. I ordered mine two days ago (saturday) with 2860QM and I fully expect mine be shipped with 3820QM (with 8MB cashe)...

since they should have already moved the production to Ivy Bridge by now, it would be inefficient (as well as costly) to keep two lines of production(sandy and ivy) open side by side.

No nothing incredibly new this time round :/
Tbh it is more of a refresh than anything else(cooling system is fine tbh )
As for design ..it takes time to come up with a new design give them time chassis don't grow on trees XD
A new screen would've been awesome but we still have the old one as far as I know D:
Edit: A friend pointed out the product code and SKU for the lcd have changed to 692708,[230-12516] from 566186, [230-12024]
This could mean a change in screen maybe Bill could check :D

The cooling system has been improved due to the fact that the CPU's and GPU's have all gotten more efficient - there's no need to change the design.

Technically that's not an improvement of the cooling system but rather of the cpu and gpu improved cooling system would imply that if you used older processors you'd get lower temps I agree with you if you think the current design is pretty awesome
~but an improvement never hurts I mean companies like Dellinware higher product/industrial designers and pay them through the nose so I doubt they're sitting there not coming up with stuff :D

    Nice find!

Bill, could you tell us the difference between these parts? (maker, screen type, gamut coverage, luminance, etc)

I understand you might not know these specs, but maker and model number would be enough. We'll take care of finding the specs from there. ;)

hey guys, since it's out that every1's Notebook of the new Revisions hasnt been shipped yet, get automatically the Ivy bridge.

Thats pretty cool, i asked my Alienware Chat Partner again and he said HE CANT CONFIRM this. I even showed him the Link but he doesnt has any Infos.

But does that really count for EVERYONE worldwide that we get the CPU changed if our order hasnt shipped? Since all get manifactured in China anyways.

Just emailed my rep about it, i had to give him the link too and explain, he replied this...

    "Hi Will,
    Thanks for the mail.
The R2 version is fully forward compatible with future “Ivy Bridge” processors.
We are not doing any automatic upgrade to Ivy bridge processors in DELL UK."

Worrying...might ring up and ask to speak to a supervisor :p

You should talk to a supervisor judging by the above post if not you might as well reorder just incase

Just went on the chat thingy with a rep and they said that the screen has defo been changed to " generation 4" but he didnt know any specs..exciting stuff

Judging by that dellinware is ready to dish out them 7970ms

Sounds like sales talk to me (i.e. worthless). Sales reps usually have no clue of future plans, it's already good enough when they know the present well...

Besides, they will say anything vague that will improve the likelihood of a sale. You asked whether the screen had been upgraded, so he thought you didn't like the current screen, so he said something which might suggest a better screen, but not necessarily so.

Guys, relax and allow Bill some time. It is only 10:15AM @ Dell on a Monday. Technically, I think tomorrow is the day more things will happen. Regardless, if you ordered a Sandy Bridge based system and expect an Ivy Bridge based one to ship, good luck. I wouldn't count on it. Again, most of the current mobile chipsets will not support a simple CPU swap from SB to IB so there is more to it both in production and cost. Either way, Dell uses the "just in time" production process that is very lean/efficient so parts are not sitting on shelves collecting dust.

    My 2 cents,
    Scott

TL;DR, but I read it all anyway. Holy cats, you guys were busy over the weekend. I was dealing with baby sitting 3 of our nieces and my youngest, who has thrush. He's a fussy baby right about now.

Aus will be coming with the rest of APJ on May 2-ish if nothing slides. The top AMD GPU's will come about a week later if nothing slides. Target date for those GPU's is the same in all regions, but the dates can slide either way depending on factors beyond the control of engineering and the corporate launch teams. (That just means that a country manager has the final say when a part is made available, but we've done our part here in corporate.)

Stop it! "Dell seeks to achieve a balance of the finest available components available while insuring blah blah blah..." :)

I think Allan knew the details all along, but because he was told to maintain the company line, he was just doing his job.

Will hit those today. Thanks for the links.

Bill was hoping to enjoy his weekend, but it was tough with my little guy having sores in his mouth and throat. He's at the Dr now. Pretty sure it's the same thing his big bro had at the same age. He should be fine by this weekend in case anyone was concerned. :)

One easy way is to take that SKU number (xxx-xxxx), and search for it on Dell.com. Sometimes you will find the product that way, and it might have the Dell part number there on the page somewhere right below the picture. In cases where you don't find it, DellChrisM, Dell-Jesse_L, Federico from Alienware support or myself can use internal tools to look it up for you.

People are particularly particular about GPU's and CPU's. Historically this hasn't been the case except for the most geeky among us for other components. However, with the advent of SSD's, this is becoming old school thinking, and we should revisit the topic here at Dell. However, I'll say that the more components we don't commit to by vendor name, the more flexibility we have as a system integrator to sub in parts based on availability. Cold, hard fact, but that's the reality of the situation. If we say "320GB HDD," we can theoretically sub in any 320GB HDD regardless of RPM or vendor. If we add "7200RPM" to the description, we've limited our choices (which I believe we do on HDD's. This is just an example.). If we say "320GB, 7200RPM, WD whatever model name" we have really put ourselves in a bind and given our supplier a unique advantage in knowing we are locked into their component. We also run the risk of long lead times if demand for that component (or failure rate) is higher than production capacity.
    *marketing insights

False. Orders will be auto-sku'd for Ivy Bridge (already were all along) with no price change. No cancellations required. Too costly to run the business that way.
False. Nothing to do with supply chain. All to do with driver qualification.
Wildly false. Wayyy toooo costly to announce a product and respin the mobo a week later. This was a tap dance to cover a gap out (situation where the previous line of stock runs out before we offer the next revision). Some regions may have some Sandy Bridge stock to sell off, but that is strictly by region, and how they do this will vary.
Not disparaging you for guessing. That's what a speculation thread is all about. Any tone-y-ness you may read from me is more directed at the source.

Exactamundo. The base config of the M14xR2 with the Core i5 will be the only global config to have an SB. That will not change. If anyone ordered this config based on implied messaging expecting an Ivy bump will need to ask sales to change the CPU SKU and pay a slight cost difference.

Both of those SKU's come back as invalid for now in my tools. The tool I'm using is from the Recommended Spares List, which tech support uses to dispatch parts. It is not always up to speed when products first release, but it always catches up shortly thereafter. However, these 2 SKU's are in the wrong format, and will always come back invalid. The proper format is ###-####, not ###-#####.
No need to escalate to a supervisor. The R2 is not "forward compatible." It's "present compatible." That system was never designed to support SB, unless this is the M14x you're talking about, which has the base i5 as an SB, and always will. So the 14 has 2 mobos- one for all the IB's and one for the base config's i5 SB.

I think I might have ordered to fast(I literally ordered in the first 15 minutes that the R2 rolled out), or I picked the wrong processors because while everyone else has already updated mine still say Sandy Bridge. I think I might have to ring up Alan once he is free and either cancel or somehow get my order changed, I am pretty sure it is too late for me because the order is slated to be "in production."

According to Bill, ordered are already SKU'd for Ivy Bridge. You should be getting the 3610QM. I don't think anyone who ordered with 2670QM or higher would be getting SB at all.

I basically have the same config as you, and mine still says 2670QM.

Dear Bill, i just want to chill out since even after That Announcement the German Support seems to doesnt know even a little thing...

Ordered 26th April, Expected Delivery 6th June

One Chat said, i would get the Ivu bridge according to that Date, 2 others said ill get Sandy Bridge or they got no Information even though i've posted them the link.

So what will happen in Germany -_-

Since you can't order the new Revision with Ivy Bridge still.

You should be fine. The only SB on any new Alienware (there may be exceptions in different regions, per my previous long post) is the 2450M. That is the CPU in the base M14x config, and it will not change. It may disappear at some point if we run out of 2450M's, but that's pure speculation, and nothing you should bank on.

Your order should be upgraded at some point. If it's not within the next week or so, I'd reach out to Allan on the sales assistance thread and let him look into it. It's basically impossible to ship a new Alienware out with SB, save the one base 14" config. If you wind up with that system, they basically downgraded you without your consent, and you'd have a heckuva strong case to escalate with.

Thank you very much. He's doing much better now. His fever broke at 4 AM, CST, Saturday morning, but the sores are still there. He wouldn't drink juice, milk or formula all weekend because the acids in those irritated his sores. Strangely enough, he drank a ton of Arizona Iced Tea Green Tea. That also solved a side symptom of constipation, and boy, did it ever. That caffeine worked its magic.
You're most welcome, and thanks for the well wishes.

I would definitely talk to your rep if you have an order already in. You will want to hold off for the 7970's until we have an official announcement up. I'll try to keep you in the loop. As it is now, you should see 7970's roll out on platforms, where they are missing, roughly a week or two after the platform launches. That time frame is subject to change. It's a driver qualification matter, and sometimes issues that one fail-out solves cause a new issue that pushes the date back again. Hard to predict with exactness.

Valid sku, but doesn't appear in RSL just yet. It should be updated soon. RSL is a tool for dispatching parts for warranty replacement, so it might not get updated until the first orders start leaving the fulfillment center in Nashville. No reason for tech support to have sku visibility until then. Allan may have different tools sales he uses to look at shipping sku's, but I guarantee you he will prioritize this question way down the list, as he's up to his eyeballs in quotes right now.

You will get Ivy Bridge. If you check the order details again next week, and it's still showing Sandy Bridge, let me know here, and I'll get someone to look into it.
