Yh temps have been awesome so far at least gpu side, it was running like 62 at max load during benchmarks or similar.
If you mean readily accessible to change out and replace? Yes especially witht he tear down videos and the full manuals.
If you mean readily accessible to be bought .. Im not so sure on that end, don't know how the spare parts work
-
-
Yes, I was speaking of readily accessible to change out and replace. I'm sure 3rd-Gen mobile processors will be easily bought on Ebay in 6-8 months.
Edit:
A couple more questions: will there be an aftermarket option to install something like the 2x in 1 bay mSATA embedded-"Super Raid" 0 device on the MSi GT70? Context
Also will there be an HD3D 120Hz option for the 7970M? -
Guys i had a small doubt for ram , what is the difference between between a dual channel and a normal thing
like which is better 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz or
12GB DDR3 at 1600MHz ? -
It is generally better to go with a binary multiple (2^x) number for the GB of RAM in your system because it is more easily indexed by the integrated memory controller of the CPU. Rule of thumb: When presented a balanced choice, pick the binary multiple.
Dual Channel, in simplistic terms, is like RAID 0 for memory. It makes memory speeds faster, and lowers strain on the IMC from the restricted bounds that arise from using 1/2 DIMMS of a dual-channel specified pair of sockets. A single stick of memory forces the IMC to recognize the empty DIMM slot as a void space, and avoid it when assigning memory space, adding more unnecessary instructions when advancing cycles of RAM.
Edit:
TL;DR: Go with Dual Channel, go with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32... GB of ram, avoid odd-numbers and odd-number multiples of sticks (1, 3) -

8GB DDR3 at 1600MHz will be your best choice, probably. 12GB is better, but you likely won't ever need that much, especially if you're just gaming. -
is there any chance we'll see RGB panel in M17xR4?
-
That you should probably wait for Bill to check with the engineering team imo. Also it might be me but that link isn't working for me
-
Fixed the link " Context", also is there any word on an HD3D 120Hz option for the 7970M? -
Optimistic Prime Notebook Evangelist
So far the 3D bundle, including the 120Hz display, only works with Nvidia cards. I don't think this has been confirmed, but it looks like this will not change for the R4. -
For the m17x I dont think you can presuming mSata uses a different port from the general 2.5 Sata as there are only 2 hdd bays
M18x is advertised with 3 drive slots so there is defo a possibility of after market msata raid there -
About the same chance as an alien invasion

Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
and the chance to get IPS on the M18X ?

Do you mean those green little ones landing in my backyard?
edit: I think they have a Dell logo in they clothes... -
I'm talking about the other ones, you know, the ones that never land because:

EDIT:No alcohol discussions, please. -
oh erm i can't wait to see benchmarks of 650m because I'm hoping it can play gw2 cough cough
But for real I was disappointed when I saw a 650m make it into an 11" notebook. Really AW you couldn't do better in m14x?
-
Quick question: I've been doing some thinking: would it be better to grab the M17x with a 660M or 675M and the 3d Vision bundle (I want that 120Hz screen, and I've been developing using CUDA architecture for a while now) and then upgrade to a 680M or 690M when it comes out later; OR should I get the 7970M now and live without 120Hz?
-
yeah i have the clevo p170hm which is great had it for 8 months bought it because it was over $1000 cheaper than the m17x with the same specs(clevo $2200 m17x $3300 in australia)
they are great laptops juust more simple in design etc(not ulgy though the 270wm is)
are u going to use the 3d if not just get 7970m 3ds a gimic any way the only thing i do in 3d is watch some movies(have a 42" 3d tv only $400) you cant game for long before getting sore eyes and i forget about it after 10-20 min -

It all depends on what you want. Personally, I really enjoy the 3D, especially in games like L4D2. If you go with a 3D system, I highly recommend the 675m so you can play with good frame rates.
The 680m or 690m will undoubtedly be expensive to obtain as an upgrade, and will likely be out late summer.
As far as AMD goes for me, I pretty much have the same opinion as Mr. Fox. I've had terrible experiences with ATI in the past, which makes me hesitant to choose a radon card. I may eventually, we'll see.
I respectfully disagree with this, I think 3D adds to the experience, depending how it's used. I've gamed for 2 or 3 hours in 3D consecutively before and never had a problem. -
Ah. I don't necessarily want it for the 3D, just the 120Hz refresh rate. I've compared refresh rates of a 60Hz vs. a 120Hz television, and the difference is remarkable. It makes (for me at least) a much more comfortable experience for my eyes, and the smoothness is impeccable.
Edit: In regards to Little Washu:
I think that is a good plan, and I, too have had horrible ATI experiences in the past (though probably at the fault of the manufacturer of the actual card). However, I have heard wonderful things about the performance of the 7970M, and I wish Dellienware would offer an option for AMD's HD3D.... But, nVidia's 3D vision and drivers and etc. seem to be more reliable.. I'm so torn. -
Optimistic Prime Notebook Evangelist
Ah, in that case your frame rates should be fine. Assuming you want the 120Hz screen and want to order soon, I would recommend the 675m with as much accidental damage service as you can swing. It's all up to you on what you want most, but you can always have Allen give you a quote.
-
Hm. Allen? Also I replied to your original post over on the previous page in an edit. Why the additional damage service?
-
It has been said the 7970m is a 'game changer' for ATI when it comes to notebook video card performance. So far it has been reviewed as "One of the best mobile video cards, if not THE best, ever tested". The reviews speak for themselves. I've always been a fan of NVIDIA, but this 7970 just sounds like a complete beast. Only time will tell!
-
The 690m will be a Dual GPU card, and most certainly expensive beyond belief.
-
690m? dual GPU on a single board? on laptop? *laughing hysterically*

I always recommend the additional warranty because if you ever run into troubles, it will more than pay for itself. This warranty beats any I've seen from any other manufacturer. As has been said before, exotic/gaming laptops are prone to issues. Components fail sometimes, and trying to replace laptop parts on your own can be very expensive. Accidents also happen. Most importantly, though, these laptops are too expensive to not have them covered. Recently, I ran into an issue with my R3, and Dell has gone above and beyond my expectations to take care of me.
You can also completely tear down a Dell laptop and put it back together without voiding the warranty, as long as you don't damage it while doing so.
I'm not disagreeing with you there, I think it's great for us, the customers, to have AMD really step it up. This card certainly surprised most of us. Competition is a very good thing. Only time will tell as far as the card, and how well it will stack up against Nvidia later down the road. I'm excited for them to duke it out.
Oh man, wouldn't that be something.

Hey brancarr ... those specs ... specifically the Crucial M4 ... did you request that in place of the samsung 830? If so what is that part number?? ;-)
Dave -
Speaking of Dell part numbers ... is there an easy way to see (or search for) specific items?
i.e. from an specific item perspective ... say I wanted a certain part - other than searching on dell.com, is there a way to find the dell part number for the item?
or from the opposite direction: say I did a configuration and I have the part number (i.e. - 342-4430 ... I KNOW from this forum is a samsung 830 ssd) ... will a search on dell.com or somewhere else show me what that item number is?
Hope this didn't sound like too stupid of a question!!
I was curious because for example, in my original quote I had only a part number but had it not been for this forum I would have never known what "Brand" of SSD I would be receiving.
And yes, I know I "could" get in a chat with a rep to try and find out these things ;-)
Dave -
And furthermore ... Allan ... Bill ... Michael ;-) ... you mention brands on certain additions on the configurator (i.e. in the graphics card section, you mention the Nvidia card or Raedon card) but why not on everything else?
The hard drive section is a good example: no name brands ... just drive size and speed!
Ok ... I am done "ranting" ... all is good and looking forward to any announcements in about 7 hours ;-)
Dave -
don't forget that for the 120hz screen to be oticable is when a game is running at mor than 60fps so or games like bf3 and other demanding games a 675 wont get over 60fps so u wont se the 120hz
-
Well, speaking of tech support, I have some very exciting news from chatting with some tech.
It seems that my personal contact has said, or hinted, rather:
Ivy Bridge confirmed;
Dell does not yet have shipments of IB;
MXM 3.0 on M17x R4 and M18x R2;
Those who ordered laptops and inquired about IB will be notified upon IB release;
You will have to cancel your order due to price difference;
M18x will offer a Dual xFire 7970M option as soon as they get their stocks in;
When Dell gets the shipments of IB, they will revise the mainboards for all Alienware laptops with MXM 3.1 (among other improvements) and add 1 to the revision number, making the M17x R4 we've been envisioning and dreaming about actually the R5.
It appears that Dell is trying to discreetly get rid of their Sandy Bridge stock. -

I don't think that source is correct. Have you read the posts in this thread by Bill? There has been a lot of miscommunication about this. -
Yes, I suppose. It is all speculation at this point, though. That's what the rep told me, but I suppose they could be misinformed somehow? Unfortunate... It will be interesting to see what comes out in the wash.

Actually, I'll be installing it once my laptop arrives. I ordered the M4 from somewhere else.
Well at least the Desktop version will be dual GPU.....I already read about it earlier...Which leads me to speculate a little. Will the mobile version have dual GPU? Lets hope so. If it does, it's game over for ATI unless they can get the 7990 ready and in production in time
-
You gotta remember the TDP and space restrictions on laptops..I haven't read into 690s but if they're like 590s then its basically 2 down clocked 580s shoved in together..
If nVidia'ss 680m performs similar to 7970m(remember these are at 100W the tdp limit of mxm 3.1) then a sli config of 680m >= a 590 -
Did I miss the special anouncement that should occur today?? What was it??
-
Got my own special announcement.. my M14X R2 has shipped this morning! Woohoo!
-
yea where the announcment which should be at 8am CEST? xD
-
i thought they dont ship until at least after the 17!? when i go to configure one it says may 25th
-
ETA until press release/blog is about 4 hours 30 mins if ive calculated the time differnce correctly
Im not cancelling my order until i get official notice that IB wont be shipped with my m14xr2, so far what ive been reading is that the new revisions will be shipped with IB!
Its all pointing in that direction xD
I will be surprised if they ship the refreshes with SB, that would be strange... -
Well I ordered mine with the i5, so I'm assuming that's going to be SB (which I'm happy with cos I didn't want to wait until June for the IB i5).
So yeah, looks like they are shipping with SB.. the i5 at least
Also got the 900p screen and the 2GB 650m, just because no-one could confirm that the 1GB version wouldn't have an inferior core (shaders, clock speed etc). -
well Bill said 8:01AM CEST... its 10:45 right now.. xD
But i wait until its confirmed as well. After my chat partner said i'll get an Ivy for sure since my Approx Ship date is 6th June, the guy at phone said he can't see the information, because they didnt receive the Money yet. (i wont pay until i know i get IB). He could just see it when it get produced (hell yea i cant cancel my order then anymore lol)
so i'll just wait till it gets official... damn i want my 3720qm! -
My m14xR2 is still in the "Production Stage" ive heard i can still cancel my order at this stage, so depending on what news we get today will determine my actions on my order
Ill be checking this forum and this blog throughout today xD

Why would an American employee of an American company use GMT or CEST?

True Story CST fits more to Florida huh?
Seems i swallowed some letters :O

They wouldn't.
I just added the conversion for any other Europeans that were curious.
