As long as it uses the same MXM 3 Slot, then yes, it should be. But, until we actually see one and get the physical specifications, there is no way to know for certain.

On clevo forum they said there is a new standard now mxm 3.1 but it is backward compatible with 3.0b.

Good.
Resell value on mobile GPUs are quite good compared to desktop parts. You can get about 1/2 the retail value of the new Part back. Makes upgrading cheap, IMO, especially for top-end parts. -
Precisely! But still got to choose the right moment to sell them though
-
You're helping me prove my point. Yes, the stock 580M is also a hobbled desktop card.
The difference is, the GTX 560 Ti is a 170W card, and had to take a 30% downclock to fit into the GTX 580M's 100W TDP. The 7870 and 7850 are already there, at 93W and 116W (which is what makes them amazing, the performance per watt). Neither of these cards will also require that massive downclock; they do not have to follow the same ratio as the 560 Ti -> 580M transition. So if a full 7850 is made the 7970M, boom, that's nearly a 50% lead over the 580M right out of the gate. Do you now understand from where my performance speculation is coming?
All of that said, my speculation is based on the belief that AMD is still shooting for its flagship mobile card to sit at/around 100W, thus nearly the full power of the cards can be taken mobile. If they want the 7970M to be 75W, then you may be closer to accurate. -
It could happen, we will just have to wait and see, there are engineering considerations beyond just the TDP (size, especially in relation to power cleaning, being the biggest one). However, if they manage to pull it out and deliver a full speed desktop card in a laptop that will be impressive indeed.
It is all just speculation at this point, and my bets are still on it seeing a pretty significant downclock for the mobile version. -

I would be surprised if AMD held back on the mobile market.
A mobile GPU makes much more money than a desktop version.
Why do you think Nvidia was happy to launch the fully unlocked 460M when the 450ti desktop card was partially disabled?
The only reason AMD would not would be if the vast majority of chips were leaky and hot, but none of the reviews of the 7870 point to this. -

I will remove post after i don't know where to post this im relatively new, i need to know whether i could get a better deal or if i should go ahead and pay for this one -
It's a decent price.
Since you live in Ontario - if you can travel to Niagara Falls, USA for a quick visit, I can tell you how to get one for much cheaper. Shoot me a PM if interested.
I know a great US-only rep. Also, Dell Outlet USA can get you one for 1k< if you're lucky. CBIUSA is an excellent US address mail holding facility in N.F. USA. -
any news about m11 r4?
-
No, but I want it to replace my R1, don't expect it till late June/July though.(since the Ivy CPU was delayed till June for it.)
-
more 'info' on the M17x R4
Alienware M17X R4 - More info - Dell News and more
looks like its still retain the 900p as default config i guess -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
meh my biggest regret on this machine was not getting the 1080p screen. You can tell the different pretty easily between them with the 1080p screen looking much better. guess thats not changing till possibly the R5.

techPowerUp GPU-Z Validation mng36
is this for real?
and what about this eDP....will this help in weight saving...i.e lighter (weight-wise) displays? -
No. 7900M's are 28nm. "Blackcomb" are the 6900M's. 1120 shaders = 6990M.
-
yeah you are right...i guess it was the GPUZ not knowing and assuming it to be a 6990m, but notice the
Pixel Fillrate: 25.0 GPixel/s Texture Fillrate: 43.7 GTexel/s
Memory Type: GDDR5 Bus Width: 256 bit
Memory Size: 2048 MB Bandwidth: 128.0 GB/s
can these specs change with OC's -
eDP is what the M17x R3 already uses for 3D it allows much more bandwidth and higher res support.
At the moment, laptops that use it are the R3 when selecting the 3D display and the M6600 when using the RGBLED IPS display. Switchable graphics is missing when using eDP as it bypasses the iGPU as a) it doesn't support 120Hz and b) it doesn't do 10-bit colour for the IPS. With Ivy, the new iGPU should be capable of all these and therefore, a move to the eDP by Dell is logical and the graphics switching will likely still be present
-
I sure hope so. It's hard having to choose between 120hz and switchable graphics.
-
switchable....always a first for me IMHO
3D great for the enthusiasts....if perhaps..there was a way to have have both...i might be tempted....if the price was good
otherwise FHD & switchable FTW -
-
The industry is slowly switching to eDP as the new standard...
The upcoming Clevo EM models all have Optimus 2.1 support except the 3D/120hz screen model...guess the HD4000 simply can`t drive that refresh rate just like the HD3000... -
-
what is a processor clock? is this new or a variation of a shader?
-
That's just what the program calls the shader clock.
-
With the 128-bit bus I'm afraid it's not even going to threaten the 480M.
-
FHD and BD on the M14x R2 please please please.
-
thanks for the clarification
-
hey update... i have been told by a "little birdie" the new M17xr4, might actually sport some new LED's or colors and something to do with the ?structure of the palm rest as well..not entirely sure on that last bit 'o info
-
That's crazy talk man. Look at the GT 640M benches, then add GDDR5 and higher clocks to the equation.
Have we so soon forgotten that the 128-bit GDDR5 5870M was marginally slower than the 480M? -
Do you believe in a chassis change for the M11x considering the fact that some ultrabooks now are packed with an impressively powerful 640M ?
-
TheBluePill Notebook Nobel Laureate
A 640M would be the logical choice still for the M11X, it can run that much cooler and faster, making the M11X all the more stable. Maybe with some other hardware changes they can even include a smaller power brick or thin the profile further.
Otherwise, you never know, a 660M might make its way into the M11X.. That would be epic. -
I think the 660M will be for the M14x but definitely, if they could pack the M11x with a well cooled 640M, make it a bit thiner, with a smaller bezel and power brick then it would be awesome ^^ .
-
GT 640M is about 30%+ weaker than GTX 560M, which is still weaker than 480M overall, so even if you add the gddr5 and higher clocks, it still doesn't impress.
You are mixing AMD to Nvidia here. The GTX 560M is even 192-bit with core 775Mhz + GDDR5 and still slightly weaker than the 480M. So, yeah, in my book there's no reason for a party just yet. -
Knowing the new ASUS ultrabook UX21A will have a FHD IPS screen in 11.6 inch the M11x R4 cant stay behind right?!
-
I wouldn't ask for Full HD -- 768p would be enough for that size. But when you pay 3-5x the price of a netbook, you expect premium components in ALL categories, or at least the option to get them.
-
I think thats very wishful thinking.. As a matter of fact, the clevo 11.6 inch gets a 650m maximum, and there rumours from resellers, that clevo is still deciding between a 650m and 635m, which probably speaks for the 650m getting hotter than the 635m (speculation)
I think the m11x will also get a 650m at best.. but probably just a 640m (clevos cooling certainly looks better) -
can't wait for the m14x revision...new GPU please!
-
Can't wait for a M18x revision... with higher pixel density display options please!
-
So when are we getting the said m18x ?
-
There's some hope! There are quite a few new laptops (mostly ultrabooks) coming with high res IPS panels. The tendency may result in lower cost of these panels as more and vendors join the race.
-
What's the next notebook logical resolution after 1080p, assuming manufacturers stick with 16:9?
-
2560x1600? No way the current cards can handle this resolution though.
-
TheBluePill Notebook Nobel Laureate
3840 × 2160, which is 4x the resolution and at laptop sizes, similar to Retinas PPI. -
sick pixel density
-
iPad3 is 2048x1536, which should be fine even for the HD4000, IMHO.
-
Is there some upcomming event where the new models can be revealed?
-
2560x1440?
-
P150hm with gtx 485m was handling modern game with my dell 3007 just fine.
-
I was holding out for CeBit for these to be announced but no love there.
Would the next window be PAX? Will they definitely only announce it at one of these events? Time is critical because I live in Vietnam and need to get it brought over by a diplomat when they make their next visit here.
I'm looking to buy an m14x r1, and I suspect the price will drop immediately once the r2 is announced, but the window to buy an r1 is closing rapidly as the next diplomatic visit is very soon. Anyone have any very solid idea? -
i say check the dell outlet or on ebay for some refurbished
New M17x R4, M14X R2 and M18X R2 are coming - Speculation thread.
