->Is why I'm looking at getting AW, asus and msi laptops seem nice but the serial numbers on them are killer. ><

Considering the Lenovo Y580 will be rocking the GTX 660m, I can totally see it happening for the m14x.

Yeah, pretty much what this guy said. I'm guessing the m14x r2 will have the 256-bit/192-bit version of the GT 650M. The 640M has like 256-bit memory right?

I disagree. Got a kick discount. I won't have to wait for the next company visit to Vietnam (to get the laptop brought to me here), and it will tide me over for the year and half until some truly awesome chips come out. Definitely better bang for buck than when the R2 comes out, and it will still handle everything fine over the next 18 months.
Still yeah, it would have been nice if they had announced it at CeBit, just so i could have known what I was missing out on ;)

From what it seems in the processors, from what I can tell not a big difference in terms of power, but energy consumption is greatly reduced which sounds like a huge bonus for laptops. Also the onboard graphics are about 50% better.

New graphics cards seems like they will be twice as efficient. Doesn't necessarily mean twice the performance, but sounds like lower temps and reduced fan speeds? (Correct me if I'm wrong on that last bit, but definitely boasted to be twice as efficient)

Hey guys I just found this video about the M14x R2---seems legit

    Alienware M14x R2 - YouTube

and on this site it says it will run two cards at once..what does that mean lol?

    http://www.benchmark.pl/aktualnosci...vy_Bridge_i_grafika_AMD_lub_Nvidia-38716.html

Just a thought----I dislike when people on forums say "why do you need 16gb of ram 8gb is more then enough" or " the upgrade in processors will make no difference. The current Sandy Bridge processors are more than enough for gaming! Most are actually overkill, in fact"....stfu, why do I have a 400hp car if 100 is enough? because I want the power, because I want to say that I have an ultimate machine WAY better then yours... THAT'S WHY!!!

That's fine and all, but I hope you're buying the RAM elsewhere and not from Alienware and other companies with their insane prices.

It's just saying the top model (M18x R2) can have dual GPUs, as expected. The M14x R2 certainly won't.

Dell has awesome prices! Idk what you're talking about. I mean, where else can you upgrade from 4 to 8 gigs of ram for only $400? What a bargain! Lol

Well you got time to wait. Depends on if you need a machine right now. If you do, go ahead and buy one, but if not, I would try to wait for the refresh. Hard to wait I know though. :p

I agree. I just bought an R1 because I need it pretty much right now, but looking at the specs for the 600m series, I think there's a good chance they could squeeze in a gtx660m into the m14x. And that would be a very big jump up in performance, 640 Gigaflops compared to about 300:
Comparison of Nvidia graphics processing units - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gt555m has a TDP of 30-35 Watts, whilst the GTX560m is 75. If what they say about Kepler is true, and it has twice the thermal efficiency of the corresponding Fermi chips, then the GTX660m would almost fit into the existing GT555m thermal envelope. That's not even taking into account the fact that with the R2 they will have learned a lot and improved cooling efficiency.

So definitely will be interesting to see what comes out at PAX East!

Well Nvidia are claiming "twice the performance per watt". That fact was highlighted by the Dell rep earlier in the thread and I don't think they would make that claim without it being mostly valid. The word online is also that lots of vendors are coming out with 600m refreshes due to the super low TDP. So yeah, I think there really is a decent chance that the gtx 660m could come in at 40 watts or lower.
Edit: I guess that doesn't take in to account the TDP of the DDR5 remaining unchanged though.

my guess for the m11x r4

i7 3667U 2.0ghz - 2.9ghz turbo + gt 650m...... really dont even thing about putting a 640m cuz we can probably just get a 14 inspiron or xps.
it fits into the thermal design of the laptop now, either way, significant improvements

they really need to change the screen or atleast give an option to upgrade it

for me now its a race
    m11x r4 i7 3667U + better be gt 650m ?192bit? maybe????

and clevo w110er with 35w quad and the gt 650m 128bit, both would be better than my m14x right now haha.

i could probably get more for my money going clevo on this one.

    Hi everybody,

first of all, I just want to apologize for my bad english.. (my second language..)

just have a small question for those of you who follow more then me this computer evolution buisness. I had my last computer for 3-4 years and didn't follow up enough to be feel confident in my future purchase.

I'm kinda shopping for a new computer and I ended up realising that I need a gaming laptop. (I need it for school and gaming and I dont wanna have 2 computer)

I wanted a Alienware forever and I look a bit around and end up building this:

I was tore between the m17x and the m18x but I opted for the second because I prefered the possibility of dual gpu and the alum case over the 120hz screen.

I called to order it and got a "super" deal.. She ended up offering me this at 2976$ before txs. (I wanted to pay no more then 3k$ including taxes.)

But the big question is.. shoud I buy it now or should I wait.. Will the prices really drop in the near future. I'm I overpaying a bit?

I don't need it for tomorrow but want it before D3 come out (around may 15). I can wait for others games, but can't wait playing this on my new laptop.

    Thanks for your help.

    Pat.

The upcoming XPS15 will get a GT630m or GT640 meaning the XPS17 will have a better GPU option meaning the M14x R2 could get the GTX660m.

Or is there anything in between of the GT640m and the GTX660m??

We will now in a couple of days.

It depends on many factors like salary and cost of living. Here in Canada, not only do we get paid less we are also hammered by higher prices.

The 1600x900 screen hasn't been available for the M17x R3 for a couple weeks. Think they dropped it or are just out of stock? Not that I would want 1600x900 on a 17.3" screen; just curious.

    Talking about the screen resolution.

I wonder if there will be a M11x R4. If so, it will probably come with a Kepler GT 640M. Going to be a lovely little machine if they could have a higher quality screen, and lower the fan noise levels.
