For me Pommie, I had to get it because I have had some laptop harddrives go out on me and it is not fun. I guess I paid for a little extra peace of mind. :D

hey guys, does anyone have any idea how much less power a ssd drive consumes compared to a standard hdd? the reason i ask is because i want to get as much battery life out of my M15x as possible (i ordered it with the 9cell), so if i can squeeze out another half hour out of the laptop...it'd be worth it for me.

the SSD is the single biggest upgrade boost you will notice the most. even the fastest sata drives are almost 10 times slower.

    Hey Ryuken,

I just ran up Dragon Age with all settings maxed, 4xaa, stealth off (duh). Max temp I hit was around 52 on all 4 cores.

Sorry bud - looks like you have an issue within your machine.

it should be in the device manager. even without a driver windows will recognize the card. if you are in the u.s. and its not on the invoice its a pretty good chance you don't have it.

I guess I'm going to have to Dell out first thing tomorrow morning... womp WOMP.

I find it weird that such a feature which is listed as a standard would be left out of the invoice... even though it was, I don't get why they advertised it but are not pulling through with it.

Isn't it in the bios? When you start up, hit Del key over and over and have a look into the bios, see if you can see a switch for turbo. Maybe it's F1 for laptops, either F1 or Del.

Ok, if my memory serves me correctly. Turbo mode is "turned on or off" based on the load on the chip. The chip/chipset determines when turbo mode is activated. It is not something that can be turned on of off (at this time) on the M15x. Hope that helps. :D

Think you're right, remember reading something about that. It's just automatic depending on which cores are in use or whatnot, that when 4 can't be utilized, it'll kick back and start turbo mode, and increase the Ghz or whatever the lower amoutn of cores in use. Something like that.

so for i7 820 (1.73ghz) the maximum turbo is 3.02ghz, is this while its running as a core2duo or a single core? if its the latter then what could be the speed if it runs as a c2d.

iam sorry if it doesnt make sense ;-)

ya...you're definitely not making sense lol :p

core2duo is a 'brand' of processors, not a 'mode.'

anyhow, 3.02GHz would be referring to the single-core turbo mode.

ps, just because the core is one thread won't mean that it will 'turbo up,' the core must still be cool enough.

Turbo is on by default and it can be turned off in the bios. I tried overclocking but there are no bios settings I could find to do it. You can overvolt the ram but my laptop didn't boot up when I tried it.

Hey froogle, what program did you use? did you run the HWMonitor?
If not, tell me the program to check it on my M15X to see if it will still
register like 60degress Celsius which is totally weird, running programs like
    IE8,skype and remote connection.
I will also check it with SIW.
last question how to check if stealth mode is on or off?
Thanks for the alarming info..oh man.......

I asked my sister today to open the laptop.
1.)Put to high performance on battery
2.)Opened HWMonitor, initial read varies from 40-43degrees in 3minutes
3.)Ran AVG fast scan mode and temperature goes up to 53degess.

Hey everyone, I would like to ask a question about the latest m15x.
Has anyone encountered the jerky music playback in your m15x through the audio out? Please help me! I am having a serious music playback issues regardless what music player software you are using, itunes, wmp, vlc... The music files seems ok on the other pc.

P.S- By the way, I didn't experience this problem when I was using Vista. Now I am using windows 7. Is there anything to do with the drivers? Apparently I have no problem playing it through the build in speakers. But not with the audio out. :( Any help is much appreciated.

I think everything should be fine after installing the codecs. That usually fixes my audio problems. Then again I am on Windows Vista. Please do inform us of any further problems and we will try our best to help you out.

if your audio out default is set to the speakers you are connecting to
    abd it does'nt play right
and if it plays fine on your laptop speakers i would say the problem is not a codec but either the audio out connection or the cable is faulty

I just ran SIW. SIW not only shows you what IS going on, it also shows you what DID go on. When it's running it logs the min and max temperatures under the Sensors item on the menu on the left. So, I ran SIW, then fired up Dragon Age and went monster bashing for a while. Then I shut Dragon Age down and looked at what SIW was telling me for min and max.

Stealth mode is off if the stealth mode light is dimmed. If it's bright, it's on. THe stealth mode light is the touch button at the far right of the row of touch buttons.

Ryuken - I just ran another test for you.

I ran up Flight Simulator X, switched it to DirectX 10 mode, and maxed out all the detail sliders - not even the mighty M15 can cope with those settings too well. There's a mission in that sim called "Sitka approach". It's basically a Cessna flying over mountains and then sea, with lots of ground and water traffic, clouds, haze, sun, reflections etc etc. I loaded it up and walked away for 15 minutes just letting it fly. I also zoomed the view out since that has an unhealthy impact on frame rates since there's more to draw.

Max temp on two cores was 60. The two others hit 57. The temps dropped on all 4 cores to 47 within 5 minutes of exiting the game.

    Hope that helps.
