    Hi,

    Now that is odd...

If your Car rims are made from Magnesium alloy, you have to pay extra.

    Why?

It is lighter and stronger then “normal” alloy. :)

(And more expensive to make as magnesium is very volatile as row material).

ALthough I prefer it to be aluminimum like for the Macbook Pros...feels more luxurious dunno....Anyway, magnesium is better than plastic anyway

From clicking on accept payment to having it in your front door, is about a month and a half give or take right?

Also has the new BIOS update came out yet with the hot fixes?

Nivaku - I placed order last Sunday (18/10/2009), it shipped today (24/10/2009), so it's far less than 1 month. Your mileage may vary though :)

And yes, I fully agree with the people asking for calming people down and not jumping to conclusions (they will send me a returned item, or "build quality is not going to be good").

Dell is a big company, I'm sure that they don't just wait for someone to place an order to start building it. It would be a business suicide to do it, especially for such a high-demand product as the M15x right now.

The way they usually work is:

Dell will collect orders until they have a full Truck load. (Servers, Laptops, Printers..)

UPS then collects the secured Truck load from Dell’s Ireland head quarter.

Only after your delivery arrives at the UPS UK distribution Centre, your parcel

is logged onto the UPS system.

That’s why it can take up to 4 days until you can trace it via the UPS website.

From here it goes to the Regional UPS distribution centre, and then it goes to your Local UPS depot.

I would not believe that Dell sends out box by box.

Half of the boxes would “go overboard” in the Irish sea  , as we are not talking

    about low cost items here.

I have the 260m with only 3GB Ram (soon to be 6Gb) at 1066MHZ with the 1600x900 screen. Batman for example runs at avg. of 52 FPS at 1280x720

I'd give you my 3dmark scores, but am currently in the process of upgrading to Vista Premium (just got my upgrade disc).

Wow. That's good stuff. I have an M15x coming with the same specs as yours. You mentioned average frame rates in batman at 52 fps--are there any spots where it slows down to the point that it is unplayable? I read that the 1066mhz RAM, while slower, performs substantially the same as the 1333mhz RAM. So I ordered the 1066. Batman is one of the games that I want to play on my new system, so I am wondering if you find the performance acceptable given your specs.

It's fatter (1.9" vs. 1.5"), and I think it's tad wider and bigger overall. It's almost in the 17" size bracket.

Well ive used it for a few days now since i picked it up from UPS on Friday.

Hawk and GRID workd flawlessly at max settings (i repfer 4x AA/AF) at 1920x1080, also worked perfectly with my xbox for windows PC controller.

Only down sides to other a perfect mobile gaming rig, not enough USB slots (3x) and displayport instead of HDMI. Tho depering on how well the DP -> HDMI adapter works with sound i will retract, also DP cables and adapters are rare as rocking horse **** in the UK thats why im giving it the thumbs down. Ordering adapter tomorrow.

The black finish is very nice on the metal case it looks great, i have mine glowing mostly green at the mo and im pretty happy overall, looks the busniess and plays as well as youd hope and expect ;)

Anybody that wants some pics of any part of it, id be happy to take them.

The screen area onthe lid is all overly shiney, not just the actual (and almost small by comparason) 1920x1080 15.6" display. So shiney in fact is actually very hard to see anything with the amount of reflective light. In the dark however or dim light the screens display is vibrant, bright and extremly responsive. Im not sure if theres somkind of filter availble to reduce this super high gloss finish to more of a pallatable matte finish without dimming the LEDs awesome vibrancy.

My main rig is a OC i7 with an intel extreme SSD as the OS drive, so i can tell with some experiance that with only a 7.2k 250 gig conventional HDD in the laptop atm, with an SSD this M15x would be pretty sick.

I have a VAIO Z and I love it. Granted they are 2 very different machines in that you can't really game on the Z.

If you want any kind of portability and battery life then stick with the Z. I was very underwhelmed with the M15x.

Those are nice pics. Is that mat under it plastic or fabric? It's always better for the computer to be on a completely flat space. Any little wrinkle on the fabric could interrupt the air flow. Also fabric collects dust.

Plus I just think it would look more elegant with it right on top of the wood.

    Nice setup though.

thanks for the advice: they are fabric and althought they didn't seem to affect the cooling I completely did not think about them as dust collectors -- they are gone and you were right: much more elegant on just the wood itself.

    Hello everyone,

I've started to play around with my new m15x by doing a clean install of windows 7 (not with the update coupon but with a win7 dvd i bought a couple of days ago).

So basically everything went smooth and my wifi card was working well just after the install.

Bad things started to happen when i downloaded all the downloads available on the dell's website for the m15x.

Since then, my wifi doesn't work anymore.. I mean, it appears in the system components, but it can't connect to my wireless network for some reason.

I've had this issue in vista and I don't remember how I found the solution.. I think it was in services.msc via the run command but I don't know exactly..

I think I will do another clean install of win7 tonight when i'll be at home, and avoid installing the network card drivers..

By the way, despite the command center and nvidia 260 drivers, what should I install from the dell's website please ?

ps: windows 7 is fast and nice :p

I had the same problem with my M17X after a clean install of Win 7. To fix it I had to disable the onboard ethernet port. Then my wireless would start seeing available connections. Does the M15X use broadcom wireless also?

    Ok I will try that...

But I think I will need the ethernet port sooner or later...

Can you do it actually ? Or are you wifi only ? I'm pretty sure there's a fix for this.. If I can't get both to work at the same time, I'll reinstall windows7 (I don't mind it took me 20min yesterday, pretty fast imo)

No Darkhan, the M15x uses the Intel 5300 wireless card. :D

Edit: Any info on bios? I will cancel the Envy I have on order the minute I hear there is a bios that really fixes the stuttering. :D

All you need to do is go to your network properties and disable your local area connection. If you want to use the ethernet port, just go back in and enable it.

There should be a fix soon, assuming this is the same issue that you have on yours?

    Yeah i tried, but nothing..

i don't understand why it was working perfectly without touching anything just after my clean install.. as soon as I installed dell's driver, it stopped working lol :p

I will try again tonight, if it doesn't work, i will reinstall win7 without doing the network drivers update after this..

By the way, if somebody else did a fresh OS install, could you help me on deciding which driver from the dell website i should install and which not ?

So far, two drivers seem important to me:

    - gpu (260m)
    - command center

Maybe i'm missing some drivers, but everything else was working fine after the win7 install.. no sound / keyboard problems..

i need your advice though :)

    WOOT!

finally i went to the step of actually ordering the m15x.

    I had a area-51 17" 4 years ago, which i changed into a DELL xps1730.
since i am traveling a lot, i need a desktop replacer. But i am getting tired of the weight and size of the 17" gaming laptops and figured id go with the 15" now.

There is only one catch tho, i am from norway. And prices in from the UK with added tax for norway (being outside of the EU) are insane. I ended up ordering from the US and having it shipped to a friend there. (i am visiting in a month + so i can pick it up at his place). Price difference is wild tho, ended up paying about 4.2k dollars for this one, which in norway would have cost me about 7.1k. i **** you not.

oh well. Here are the specs. I can't wait to get this beauty.

    1 Alienware M15x, Cosmic Black
    1 Intel Core i7 920XM 2.0GHz (3.2GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache)
    1 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz – 2 x 4096MB
    1 15.6-inch WideFHD 1920x1080 (1080p) WLED
    1 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M
    1 256GB Solid State Drive
    1 Personalized Nameplate
    1 Genuine Windows® 7 Professional, 64bit, English
    1 Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
    1 Internal High-Definition 5.1 Surround Sound Audio
1 Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11AGN Half Mini Card
    1 Primary - 6-cell (56Watt) Lithium-Ion Battery

praying for the BIOS update to be done by the time they assemble it.

don't worry that much about the bios update, i'm pretty sure it's coming soon since a lot of people have some issues on their new lappy

as far as i'm concerned, when i had an asus, there was a little tool very simple to use, you just had to indicate the bios update file, click update and boom, bios updated after a restart (~5min max) :D

I did the same thing like you. Installed a fresh Win7 and all Dell drivers. Everything worked fine for me, though. Even WiFi. I suggest installing at least the chipset drivers, they are very important.
