I am using 8.16.11.8681, The soundcard is not "irrelevant", it acts like a GPU, it handles all sound processing, therefore the CPU does not have to waste processes on sound, and you can use EAX.

MW2 runs very impressively for me. I realize the 260M is the equivalent of an OC'ed 9800GT, and that is more than adequate, considering that MW2 runs on the COD:WOW/COD4 engine......

There is no way MW2 runs faster on your system than mine (unless your GPU is clocked significantly higher). My C2D is overclocked to 3.5ghz and the GPU is @ 600/1550/1000 when I play. It may be adequate @ 1920x1200, no AA, some options turned off, VSYNC on but it certainly isn't fantastic. I consider a min frame rate of 45-50FPS to be good in an FPS. Since the system drops it down to 30 or lower on some heavy scenes, it does put a severe hamper on aiming and movement. -
Ummmm sorry but it is DAMN obvious that it was developed around the console. Half the features from the first were dumped, and a good portion of the configs that you can do can only be done inside a running game. One being mouse config. When the producer adds mouse configuration as a feature.....sorry there is a reason the game is controversial. Hell 9 x 9 is a deal killer alone for me. I would not touch that game if it was given to me.

I don't think it is technically a port, but its development is certainly centered around a Console version.
When I first went to lean left and right, I threw a few grenades. I was shocked to see that MW2 removed leaning from the game (Q & E).
I'm playing through it for the Single Player campaign on Veteran difficulty, definitely not interested in Multi-player. I guess if you really wanted to play Multi-player, you would have to buy it for Xbox and use it on Xbox Live with a keyboard or mouse. -
It might be stand alone development but it definatly doesnt play like anything but a lame over hyped console game. The multiplayer is geared towards noobs IMO and no im not trying to "spoil" it for anyone, the user reviews speak for themselves. Scores nowadays are based more on who developed the game rather then the content itself. I could really care less who does or doesnt spend $50 on a game, it just sucks all the revenue that goes for boring multiplayer titles like this. Game of the year...really? This is getting way off topic so im not gonna acknowledge anymore CoD is leet posts.
-
I agree, the entire CoD series has been overrated and MW2 feels exactly like a cheap console port. Unfortunately that's the trend now because most top PC devs have shifted to consoles for their primary development while PC's get the leftovers. Valve is the only worthy holdout at this point and it's only a matter of time before they switch over. Don't worry about OT talk, this is an "owners lounge". -
I finally did it guys, I placed an order on an Alienware M15x

Wow, lots of haters. Personally I have been a gamer since I first loaded F-15 Strike Eagle on my Apple IIe in 1984, so I guess I have been gaming for 25 years. In my opinion, yes there are a lot of things that could have been better in COD MW2, but guess what? I am not on the development team, so you get what you get. I think the game is superb, rich in detail, correct weapons, uniforms, and gear. The multiplayer is great, although I am a sucker for the Battlefield series. I do miss the l/r lean, it would be a nice addition, and maybe in future updates they will bring it back. The single-player is deep immersion, like playing a movie. This forum is clearly not a gamer forum, most people on this forum appear to be MMOPRG players or casual players, or use their M15X for non-gaming purposes, so discussing the finer points of great games with some people on this board is like beating your head against the wall (some are just elitists and cannot be debated with). Right now my drive is loaded with Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, L4D2, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Bioshock and Rome: Total War (one of the best games ever made). Just this year I played a lot of games with great depth like Far Cry 2 and Resident Evil 5, and just like I said before, I am not on the development team so I play what I get. Like Abraham Lincoln said: "Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be"
-
Wow you must really think highly of yourself J-train. FYI I've been playing PC games for >20 years but that doesn't make my opinion more qualified than anyone else. It's funny, earlier in this thread you accused me and another poster of being elitists because you didn't know what CUDA was yet now you're thumbing your nose at this forum because apparently we're all MMORPG players, elitists or simpletons not qualified to discuss the "finer points of great games" with you.
-
@ J-Train: What the hell... so if some of us plays MMORPG's, that doesn't classify us as ' gamers ' ? yeah okay. * rolls eyes *

My first ever laptop was a 3000 dollars compaq..top of the line with 4 mb of ATI video ram
That said..its strange how someone's M15x run MW2 choppy? my G60VX (I know resolution not high) but at 1366 x 768 run MW2 everything max on my P7450 duo core, GTX 260 , everything runs perfectly with super fluid frame rate and 4X AA. Wonder what could cause an AW to run it choppy a 1024 x ??? resolution?
unthinkable.
Fedex is set to deliver my AW on Tuesday by 1630 hours..can't wait
PS: AW M15x design vs Macbook hm... kinda hard to compare....its like..beauty and beast... I'll take the beast any day... at least you can have a bumper sticker says MY ALIENWARE SMASHES YOUR MACBOOK
Just aw this web site..guess Asus is trying harder to get a piece of the gaming market now

There's nothing beautiful about a macbook, I think they're very plain looking. MW2 runs perfectly fine on my M15X at 1080p with high details so it must be that particular person. You're gonna beat me by a day, my new system is coming on Wednesday, it just went into shipping tonight. -
i have held a M17x and MBP and i will say the M17x is not only stronger and better designed but it smokes it in performance
i will have a very lengthy review of it and i will update my review of my M17x over my break after my finals next week -

New system? What's wrong with your current one? -
proably got it to test and see if the new one was any better or its one of the 2 he is selling overseas
-
plug it in ........

Nothing, the replacement system I got has a 256gb ssd + 2 yrs complete care and it cost me less than this one. The other 2 (total of 3 ordered) are for resale to international buyers. -
You guys and your dag nab it new fangled tech toys.
When I was a kid all they had was lines in the dirt and you had to draw the ball being batted around. Let me tell you a refresh rate of 30 seconds was impressive. Ugg from the cave next to us had a refresh of 1 minute but that was because he wasn't parallel processing with 2 people to draw the lines.
Overheating was an issue though. Especially around noontime. That sun would really wear out the line drawers. The following year a new water cooled model came on the market. Mrrcook would run down to the lake and get the drawers a handful of water. Performance really picked up after that.
EDIT: On a more serious note. I've done a search of the forums and haven't seen any mention of this...the system comes equipped with an IR port on the front of the system, dead center between the two speakers. So I'm wondering if anyone has tried to use a media center remote with this thing to see if it works?? -
Greetings everyone,
I got my M15x last monday and have been installing all my popular apps like Newsleecher, Everquest 2 and Dragon Age.
With the 256 GB SSD the games fly (read speed is around 245 Mb/sec. write speed 190 Mb/sec.) level loading in Dragon age is within 2 seconds and around 3 seconds in EQ2.
Unfortunatly I have 3 defective pixels
(2 red allways on and 1 always off pixel).
I have contacted Dell and the generic E-mail response was boot up with D and power-up. I will keep everyone posted. Alienware website shows that a pixel in the dead center should be a reason to replace the screen.
-
don't let them do anything other than replace it. ill be receiving my third(yes THIRD) M15x on monday due to lcd issues. the one i'm typing on right now has a single stuck blue pixel and i cant help but stare at it. its simply not acceptable.
if my replacement has any issues whatsoever i will no longer be owning an M15x. i've spent about 20 hours on the phone and i'm pretty much done with the whole situation.
i also agree with the previous post about the E2E. not only should they have opted for real glass they could have squeezed in a larger display considering the size of the bezel. -
This should have been a 16" system but I bet nobody would touch an M17x if they had done that.
-
Urgh guys I need help.
First off my keyboard seems to miss keys when I'm typing in firefox and games. Has there been a fix for this yet?
Another issue I'm having is that sometimes while just using the trackpad and keyboard something glitches out and my keyboard goes to hell. I cant type anything without it being randomly erased, and it seems like there the left arrow key is being pressed every second somehow. If I open any confirmation window that has "accept" or cancel" I can see the highlighted box constantly toggling between the two options or more to the left. What the $%^&.
When this happens I also cannot open menus until I restart. For instance when I try to click on the start menu and make the short journey to shut down the window closes. Same with right clicking something.
This is VERY annoying and I do not know what is causing it. Can someone please help me out.
Thank you

MediaCenter Remote - IR Channel 6 works with the M17x. There is a thread concerning the M17x Remote capability HERE. Might be the same device/controller.
-
i'm assuming you actually read most of this thread and have already checked/updated the bios, and touchpad drivers?
if so it sounds like there is something wrong with the keyboard to me. when its toggling or making the cursor go left try pressing the right arrow and see if it stops. you might want to call tech support and get them to torture you for a bit so they can send out a replacement keyboard. -
These are the systems (with the desktop i7's available in the UK) - they all seem to be the same chassis, come with 3 years warranty. Dimensions and weight similar to M15x (despite being 17')..

On a second note, do you have specs for the ones you are selling - and also how they will be sold? Also, will the warranty apply to a UK resident? -
new IDT audio drivers as of 12/1. may or may not help anyone.

I totally agree with you, as I have stated earlier when talking about the touchpad problem. When uninstalling the synaptics driver and using the generic windows driver, you see an improvement, but its still laggy.
The touchpad works very smooth in ubuntu, which suggests that it's a windows driver problem. So we can just hope that the next synaptics driver will fix it. -
I just installed the new Intel Matrix Storage Manager drivers hoping they would fix the issue with the laptop restarting instead of shutting down, for the record it did not fix it. The only difference I've noticed is that now when it goes through the Windows is Shutting Down bit, the webcam activity light turns on. Any ideas why this might be?

Does anyone's M15x run at 100% without any problems?
I just want some piece in mind in hopes that mine arrives without any problems. This waiting game is killing me. -
That is your opinion. I have noticed that you make a comment on just about every post on this board. SO yes you are the elitist I was talking about. OBTW, can I have your autograph?
Sorry Roxy, that doesn't qualify you as a FPS gamer. MMOPRG players are a different kind of gamer altogether. My apologies.
Oh, so you were a console gamer from the start? I was talking about computer gaming....
Just for the record mine does (I am sure someone will claim that mine does not) I have zero complaints about mine.... -
tried using the old IR remote from my xps1530 but wasn't able to get it functioning,,,if someone has a suggestion or two to try, I will have another go at it

HI, ordered the m15x with 500gb 1.6ghz 260m 1 gb, dual 4gb mem etc about6 days ago, its been shipped out already and is due to arrive wed.
How are they at the moment anyone got one recently? and are they good when it says shipped? or do they delay after that?
Thanks -
Anyone here got 3dmark06 to run more than one time? After the first run mine keep poping up "system error info" everytime i try to run it now. I install the patch and it didn't resolve the issue.

Just for the record, you're not running your M15x at 100%. -
Explain.....

Technically Panda, I am running at 105% (running a mild OC with RivaTuner), following Joker's "tutorial" is like running your machine at 150%. The system ships from Dell running at at 100%. 100% being the system running with the drivers and settings predetermined by Dell engineers as being "optimal", therefore 100%.
-
Hahahhaaaaa! Predetermined by Dell "engineers" MWAHAHAAA! Ah thanks I needed that. As if you could believe a Dell "engineer" knew anything about laptops is hilarious. I seriously think having a degree isn't mandatory to be a Dell "engineer".
-
I agree, a Dell Engineer does not understand what performance is, however that does not make my statement any less true. 100% is the way that the machine arrives from the factory. OC'ing and tweaking puts your machine over the 100% mark. Let me give you an example. I have a 2006 Mini Cooper S. It has 172HP Stock, that is 100% of the engine performance. If I add a cold air intake, rechip the puter, and make other adjustments to the engine or drivetrain, it is running above 100%.
I think what I just did by making the previous comments was the same thing as baiting a hook and throwing it into a pond. All of the "leet fish" took the bait. I tend to spend more time actually using my PC rather than tweaking it. Just like my car. Its curb weight is 2679 lbs. and has 172 HP, that is just fine for me, could I tweak it and make it run faster? Sure. But I would rather drive it than tinker with it. I also realize that "tweaking" it might invalidate my warranty, so I don't bother. -
The throttling issue is not a result from "tweaking" J-train.
-
Hi sorry to interupt, but has anyone got some answers? waiting on the m15x and they said it was going to be 28th but it seems after ordering it and a woman there said they would prioratize the order, it says its been shipped.
I rang them and they said wed. that means its been within 10 days. It had a lot of upgrades.
It seems really fast, do they put things back after shipping anything out, its with ups, here in the uk is where its coming. UPS said its at amsterdam at the moment. it went through the phases of production really fast.
Questions are.
IS it likely they delay the shipping?
and How are they coming out of the factory at the moment ok?
also, would it be the new M15x or the old m15x, or is it the M and m 17 that are like that?
Thanks -

If you didn't read, everyone's M15x throttles under STOCK clocks.
Again, I'm always surprised when consumers are willing to take defects in their products happily for their hard earned money.
This is probably not an issue for normal usage, but it can potentially be an issue down the road for "normal" usage. When that next Modern Warfare 3 comes out and you realize your computer is using all 4 cores and GPU maxed out, I hope you're not crying to Dell when your GPU's performance is cut in half.
Cry now before it's too late for them to care. -

Call their automated answering machine - it will give you a tracking number.
By the way, I know you're in the UK and all, but that just means your English should be even more intelligible right? -
Hey there! I will tell you my experience being a new buyer and have already gotten my system sent home. I am not at the laptop because I am out of the country right now but I did have a relative open it over webcam and run some tests to make sure all is well.
Ordering:
I ordered Nov. 21st and it arrived Dec. 1st. Very fast and I was concerned but they got EVERYTHING right. They didn't screw up the nameplate either
I am very happy with the response my relative had. Build quality according to them is rock solid and feels great
It seems that they are coming out of the factory in great condition.
I hope you are posting pictures when you receive your new laptop and congratulations!!!!
