Anyone buy a good low profile bag or case for the m15x. Im not looking for a huge carrying case. More so something slick and protective that can house the laptop/power/mouse.

Its really annoying since I bought the 512mb graphics card but everyone has bought the 1gb. Its too late to change since its allready in the delivery process. Can anyone tell if there really is that big a difference. I did buy the 4gb of ram though with the upgraded screen but still got the original i7.

    512MB 240m GT/ 1GB 260m GTX
    # of cores: 48/ 112
    core speed: 550Mhz/ 550Mhz
    shader speed: 1210Mhz/ 1375Mhz
    memory speed: 800Mhz/ 950Mhz
    memory bus: 128 bit/ 256 bit

Huge bottleneck in performance with the 128 bit memory bus, less than half the cores, and slower shader and memory speed.

    hope this helps

I know right... I called earlier and asked what the status was and I was told it was in the final production stages.... and it should be sent out by the 3rd to get here the 9th...

Still too long... but I know it'll be worth it.

how many days is it taking most people?

I ordered the 24th of Oct and am getting an indicated shipping date of Nov 9th. Of course, I am one of the those folks who ordered through AAFES (Army Air Force Exchange Service). Their order number tells me nothing (broken Dell link to check my status), I e-mail Dell and they say to get the Dell order number from AAFES (?!?), that AAFES gave me the wrong order number...and from the acknowledgement of my order, my AAFES page has said from the beginning "Supplier has received order. Shipping in process."

I should add, when I queried AAFES, they say shipping Nov 9, allow more time for shipping.

Lol...all I want to make sure of is that UPS/Fedex doesn't leave a box on my porch all day that says Dell all over it...like has happened in the past.

I ordered mine on a sunday [ 10/25/2009 ] and it shipped this morning [ 10/30/2009 ] which is today. Even though I paid for standard overnight, fedex will not ship on a saturday so I'm receiving mine on monday before 3:00pm [ 11/02/2009 ] I suppose they do not work during sunday, so that's 4 business days to get my laptop built. Arcade16 also ordered on the same day as I did, and his also got shipped today.

To sum everything up - I'm glad that I did not have horrible experience like some people here have experienced [ waiting for month(s) ]. I just hope that my laptop will not arrive with problems.

Can anyone here lend me any insight on the size of the M15x compared to the M17? I compared the dimensions and it seems that the M17 is only larger in terms of width, which I thought was odd. Is the M15x really "bigger" than the M17?

Same delivery date as mine - they must have moved to a default ship date for certain order days to help keep themselves from slipping to the 1 or 2 month waiting for a machine.

theres got to be somebody that knows something about the orders placed through AAFES. I've talked to AAFES sales and they said they have dell representatives on call from 8 to 430 central, m-fri, but you may have already known this. im gonna try to call tommorrow, hopefully a dell rep will be available.

bought a new Seagate HD and did a clean install of Windows 7. Went without a hitch (almost). I did have to download the latest version of Command Center from the Dell website. I got an exception error when applying changes from the version installed from the resource CD.

Still loading Aion and WOW along with other apps. I went with Norton Internet Suite 2010 for protection. Pretty impressed with it so far.

I just received my M15x couple of days ago. Drools~!
Anyway, I have a question. Does anyone of you try this out? you enter the battery profile in Vista and change the brightness of the profile to 0. See what happens when you restart your M15x with the profile. :D

"The Shirt" any news update on AAFES and Dell?

I'm thinking of ordering through Dell since it's like $700 cheaper then ordering it through AlienDell site.

It comes out to be like $2700 with GPU/CPU Blu-Ray 4GB 1333MHZ RAM FHD Reso Good deal :D

Or are you facing similar problems like The Shirt?

    The Alien has landed!

    First impressions:

Solid little beast, easily beats every laptop I ever come across in build quality.

The Cosmos black with default blue lightning looks less intrusive then I thought.

(I have to see business clients with that machine).

The keyboard is excellent, nice travel, precise, no flexing at all.

I was a bit worried that the Icons might get a bit small with the 1080p screen.

But all is well, the screen is ace.

The wireless networking adapter can see networks 5 houses down the street.

Wireless speed, I get 45mps from my Cable Router downstairs.

First 2-3 seconds, then Fans make a hell of racket but then it's quieted as a mouse.

My Bios is A01, so that should be OK.

Windows 7 Pro shows an installation date of 23th October.

    Problems I found:

Ok, I have only the GT240 with 512 mb ram but Windows performance index of 3 for the Aero Video is very disappointing. (but more on that in a minute).

Processor comes in at 7.1 (not bad at all for the basic I7).

Memory clocks some impressive 7.4 (4 Gig of 1333).

The Hard Disk recorded 5.9 (I would think that is about right for the Standard 250 gig drive).

As many already reported, the Touchpad behaves erratically.

I found the original dell drivers do not change this at all.

In the end, I got the latest drivers from Synaptics themselves, that helped the situation somewhat.

    File Name; Synaptics_v14_0_3_C_XP64_Vista64_Win7-64_Signed_default.exe

I tried to install Dells later Nvidia Drivers for my GT240, still no change in performance. :(

Only after a complete removal, re-boot and new installation of the Nvidia Drivers the performance improved drastically to 6.5 in the Aero performance Index . :p

(All performance index figures where done after a re-boot, but with SQL 2008 running.)

    I removed:

McAfee (replaced with Microsoft Security Essentials, is only 4 meg)

Nero replaced with ImgBurn2.5.0.0 (just 2 meg).

Dell back-up program. (Or is that "Pack-Up"?)

DVD Movie (My M15 is a pure works computer).

    Web cam software.

    Still unresolved issues:

Alien FX errors when I try to change some settings.

I might set my Colours once and for all and remove the FX completely.

Things I am not sure about:

There are 2 extra partitions on the Hard drive.

One is a tiny one, some 30 megs and is empty.

Second one is "Recovery" now that is a sizable 34 Gig.

    That needs to go..

I would like to do a fresh Install but might lose the Alien Start up screen?

Any one used the Installation DVD yet?

Would I get my start up screen, Alien Logo in "Computer Properties" back?

    That's about it

You just have to deal wth their lack of information (well, at least I haven't figured out a way around it yet).

This will be my second power computer through AAFES (ordered XPS 1710 when they first came out), and several other computers over the years. Although it's tough to get any information after your order, the product arrived every time, though slower than most others seems to receive theirs.

I would recommend purchasing through AAFES for anyone who has access. The M15x I ordered (loaded) was fully 1200 less than if I configured straight from Dell (no tax alone cut off over $300 - TX has 8.25%). Just know going in that you have to be patient.

The only M15x issue I see on the AAFES site is the numbers they come up with for silver or red...I don't see too may people paying $250+ to get red over black!

it doesn't look anything like the one on dell's site. more like its silkscreened on and will wear off easily.

I may have missed an earlier post where you listed your graphics card, but was it the 240 or the 260? And, in either case, did it come with the most current Nvidia drivers already loaded?

Ah, that's the one thing I didn't max out...looking at the shot you provided, seems like it would help with cooling and typing form. Guess I can always picke up a 9-cell later. Thanks for the photo!
