Maybe they will add it later, but it just seems kinda out of character for this laptop to not have the top of the line graphics card from Nvidia and/or ATI in it.

Just foolish... If you want more power go for the M17x!

A single 4870 is completely reasonable.
I am disappointed they didn't offer it but oh well -
Some things you may not notice about the M15x:
1) They shrunk the left CONTROL and ALT key
2) There are not visible screw on the hinge of the M15x.
Unlike the M17x, all the screw are hidden except the nameplate. -
-
Maybe if they launched with the 280 and the 4870 it would have stole to much of the M17x's thunder ? i7, LED , 4870 ? sounds like an awesome machine
.

^
Yeah, so someone order a cf M17x and sell me a 4870, please.
PLEASE?? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
And Alienware not giving those options to "protect" the M17x is kind of stupid, as that is still a multi GPU system vs. a single GPU system -
How much do 280s go for? If the M15x has enough space to handle it i may consider buying one if i get the M15x
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
they are around $500 to $600 but hard to come by (would have to be the MXM 3.0b version)
We all complain, but the difference in performance will not be much between a GTX 260m and GTX 280m lol
edit: dam, I have posted over 100 times today. All this M15x excitement has got me going! -
Im sure they will upgrade to 280/4870 after a few months
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
not if the MXM slot is limited to 65 watts from the 75 it SHOULD be
-
Yep you can pretty much OC the 260m to 280m clocks and nearly match it's performance. The lack of those 12 or so shaders will drop the performance by a few percentage but nothing to really write home about. Now SLI 280 on the other hand demolishes anything. -
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
well yes, that is why SLI 280m is in my system now haha (I would hate myself if i got only SLI 260m
)

The M17x only has one fan on each GPU as well....so the per GPU cooling is the same between the 2 models -
I'm never going to be able to choose
So many opinons and here and so many things to consider. I think I'll make a topic concerning my interests and see which one people think suits my activites
-
It should be able to upgrade to any mobile 5000 series card when they release. 5850 would be a reasonable guess with it's rumored ~40w TDP.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
it really boils down to this
You either do more gaming or more CPU stuff
For gaming, get the M17x
For CPU tasks, get the M15x
They are pretty much the same size and both are heavy so nothing else should effect your decision much (maybe the screen ratio difference) -
^
Is it really that black and white? -
No, the M15x will def be more portable.
Watch the video again a couple of times - it is def slimmer -
However, I do agree with you that for more hard core gamers should go for the M17x. And the rest go for the M15x, for it's portability and battery life. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
to me it is
I am not picky about things like screens -
Look, the fan and heatsink assembly look IDENTICAL to the M17x by looking at the service manual.
Case closed on that -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the M15x has WORSE battery life than the M17x for the record
And I am not trying to say the M15x is a 17", it is just just much larger than you would think of when you think 15" laptop
I agree it will be more portable for most people. But for me, portability only means battery life, I am not too weak to handle carrying around an M17x (regardless of what laptop I have, it is going into a backpack) -
It says 2 hours of battery life but does he use stealth mode and is he using the 9 cell? I would highly doubt the max battery life is 2 hours either of those, that would be a possible deal breaker for me
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
that is the battery life...it is an i7 cpu haha
And no integrated to fall back on, so an inefficient discrete gpu for very low power use
The M17x, as silly as it sounds, gets a better battery life -
Lets not forget though that driverheaven was using the i7 920 vs the 820, and there was no mention of stealth being on. Maybe that could squeeze out another 30 mins? Thoughts?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
still not enough
-
I have heard that the i7's are not bad on power.
Take what you read on driverhell with a grain of salt -
It's a 15.6" laptop that's why it's bigger than a regular 15" laptop. -
oh great.. now I am having second thoughts. *sigh...* /walks away to sad charlie brown theme./
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
The M17x with SLI on still gets about 1.5 hours
The M15x with the discrete powered up (not stealth mode) gets about 1.5 hours as well....so 1 vs. 2 gpus -
I understand that it is an i7 machine but dell and AW know that making the m15x have less battery than the m17x would defeat the purpose of making it more portable
I am going to bank on saying he did not use stealth seeing as he didnt mention anything but balanced settings and that it was a 6 cell vs the 9 cell, I also assume the 240 would bring better life as well (not sure if anyone besides me is considering that option though haha) -
The whole 4870 deal threw a big wrench in my thinking
-
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
you know dual 4870s is calling for you Sleey0
You can sell one of them to a M15x owner for testing -
I really want a smaller-ish system, though.
I want someone to sell me a 4870 -
-
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Well the Area 51 m15x was made by Quanta, who probably owns the rights to smartbay, not dell/AW
The "all powerful" models are made by flextronics, different ODM
And the reason there is no binary gfx option is Intel. They have not made an IGP for i7 chipsets yet and have not given Nvidia the rights to make chipsets for the nehalem architecture at all (or any Intel CPU with an integrated memory controller). It is indeed a shame that a 17" will out last a 15" in battery, not that I mind -
Quick question....I'm interested in the new M15x but unsure which screen to order. I wont be using it for blu-ray watching. I plan on playing games like WIC, Dragon Age:Origins and Starcraft 2.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
which ever one you can afford then
for me, more resolution is always a must -
i plan on gettin it as soon as i pay off my card.... ive been waiting and watching and reading for the past couple monthes...now is the time mauhahahahah!!
-
-
So, am I the only one who has placed an order yet?
lol -
from the looks of it yeah .. Im sure alot of people want to get first hand word from a member what they think before they pull the trigger themself.
