It would be nicer if it was black. At least they didn't put blue flames on the back of it.

According to the benchmarks in a review (posted a few pages ago), a fully decked out M15x could only squeeze ~30 FPS on Crysis Warhead at "gamer" settings 1280x720 with no AA and 4x AF. Kind of sad, but then again Crysis is the heaviest game you'll find.
EDIT: Link -
Yeah the clevo looks cheap and the xps I played with felt and looked kinda cheap too but saying the clevo looks good is rediculas. I've wanted to buy one several times but I look at them and cant doo it. too damn ugly for a $2500 laptop
-
Well Asus engineers are fairly retarded and put this giant fake (sealed) intake under the chasis of the 51 instead of opening it up and letting it filter in cold air. As a result, they ship the 260m underclocked at 500/800/1250. Anyways, I've OC'd it back to reference speeds and it performs admirably. L4D runs at 1080p, 8xAA, 16xAF and is almost always pegged at 60fps with occasional drops to 45ish. I'd imagine the m15x with it's i7 should give better performance since Source scales well with CPU performance. Crysis Warhead runs at 1080p + gamer settings at about 20-30 fps depending on the scene. -
Just priced out the same M17x I have only with 4870's and no BD.
$2100
That is how much I am paying for the M15x.
Hmmmm -
They should've run it at 1080p, the fps wouldn't have dropped by much. On my machine, 720p with gamer settings barely yields a few extra fps compared to 1080p but looks noticeably worse (thanks to crappy LCD scaling). -
If you've got an M17x with a 4870, then just wait till DX 11 hits before buying again. I'll be getting the new clevo with dx11 once they hit in 2010. -
-
-
How are you paying $2100 for that? the cards alone are 700. add t9600 and your in $3k range.

the pm55 should support XMP? maybe finally that beautifully kingston ram will get utilized haha -
-
You are right, drake.
PM's might work better......
Doesn't change the fact that I am torn -
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Mandrake, what you think about PM55 getting XMP support?
Since I know you have been on the cutting edge with the laptop memory haha
edit: you had to post that right before me haha.....Hopefully the BIOS WILL support it, maybe it just defaults to the max setting, whether it be spd or xmp? -

Indeed. That CPU loves its memory bandwidth too haha, the more the merrier!

Thats a tough call man . On one hand you have i7 and LED but on the other hand you have Crossfire and more screen space . Both are so similar sized that i wouldnt even take that into consideration . In the end i would get the M17x personally . I think after a couple weeks you might find the M15x not what you had hoped for and youll be back to ordering a M17x . Then again since you dont keep anything for more then a week or 2 you may want to get the M15x out of your system to say you atleast tried it and by that time who knows what else will be out.
I think the main thing you wanted the M15x for was a smaller more portable machine and i dont get that vibe from it at all myself . Its a PIG for a 15inch. -
Thanks quad!
Looking at that video again the M15x is def thinner in the display (look when he opens it).
I don't think it will be that big, really. I am going to let my order ride and test-drive the new m15x. 1. Those 4870's aren't going anywhere and 2. I'll let someone eles figure out if they are DDR5 or not
Again, quad, thanks and you rock! -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
you know you are going to have to do all the performance tests for us haha (regardless of which you get
)
-
I detect some sarcasm in that reply but im cool with it.
-
We dont even know what the 4870 can really do yet. Last night someone said it was on par with 280s and wouldnt be worth doing if that were true. Also moo said the 260 is very close to the 280 i bet very much so if you oc'd it with the noob guide. So basically the performance to price ratio between the 260 and the 4870 is probably noticable but not for 700 bucks (400 more for xfire vs the 260 sli)
-
IMO, let C2D die. It's time for i7. The closer integrated architecture will work more seamlessly. It's not just a faster processor it's a more efficient system as a whole.
-
Until we see the clock speed and specs of the 4870s even speculating is a waste of time honestly . They could blow us all away or be dead even with the 280s . So all we can do is wait for now and see . I Would have ordered a machine today but the person buying my M17x /cough still hasnt paid in full and i dont want 3 laptops here quite frankly .
-
.
In then end were not struggling for CPU power as much as GPU power so a fast set of cards even paired with the Qx9300 or what have you is still going to be a monster.
They really should have just held off on the M17x till i7 was ready since it would have only been a few more months. I get an itching feeling i7 will be coming to the M17x faster then we are expecting it to .
-
I wasn't being sarcastic, quad. I was being serious. Don't matter!
Just that I appreciate you as a forum member
And that video does show that the M15x is quite slimmer than the M17x. -
And thanks for the compliment as alot of comments directed towards you are all in good fun.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
yes, the nehalem architecture is much more powerful than the core 2 architecture. I openly welcome progress
-
-
Im happy with the idea of getting a 260 at this point. Seeing as how the M15x has 65w for GPU I bet down the road some good 5000 series card will be available for this. 260 isn't the best but everything should be more then playable.
-
That driver heaven review was more like a glorified preview i thought .
-
I think the 65W power limit might be a hindrance in the future.
What if the newer cards are rated at 75W? No upgrades, that's what!
-
-
A glorified preview with terrible pictures at that.....
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
We need to see if the full 75 watts can actually be supplied or not. The voltage would be the same, so they would have to actually limit the current (which is not nearly as often done - and hopefully isnt done here)
It is hilarious though the M15x gets 2 hours or so at best, where 3.5 is common on the M17x haha -
. They must have only had the machine in hand for an hour lol.
-
yes. Sleey0 see if your spare 280 will work in the M15x.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
they just are not us is all. that (p)review is for the "normal" (read: ignorant) computer users
Alienwares "usual" customers. Remember, we are the enthusiasts and are far outnumbered by "everyone else" -
Isnt he sending the M17x back in place of this machine or are you holding on to both ? .
-
I wouldn't put it past Dell to limit it so you can't put the big gun gpus in there
-
I wonder why they did not put a 280m GTX in the M15x like they did with the original m15x putting in an 8800m GTX. The 260m GTX is fine for play most games, but it doesnt seem like there should be any issue in putting in a 280m GTX card in the M15x in regards to cooling or space.
-
-
Nah.
just the card. I do have someone interested in the machine if do decide to sell it, though. -
-
Better let them know where its been before hand.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
clevo probably didnt think twice about it either haha
AW should be offering both the GTX 280m and the 4870 as options for the M15x -
The person interested was going for a base 260 machine anyway.
He thinks the single 280 is a bonus
