How long are you getting in balanced mode? I'm actually surprised that a rig that stout can get over 2 hours, period.

It just seems like Dell knew we would think it was anodized aluminum and that the battery life would still be poop with the 9 cell

I would have waited a bit longer if they would have just not rushed this model to come out

The stuttering problem would bother most people. Have you opened up the power profiles to see what the processor power management settings have been preset to? Take a look at the maximum processor state option. On battery it should be set to something like 50% while plugged in it should be 100%. I've seen those set to some strange values from the factory.

The i7s are just power hungry CPUs sadly.. After i saw the Clevo review of the battery life on that machine i knew the M15x wouldnt fare much better.. Hopefully a couple bios updates will sort out the stuttering under power saver mode and in turn give you a few more minutes of battery life :).

They definitely aren't Atoms for sure. From the reviews I read they should use about the same power (maxed out) as the older quad cores. On paper the i7 looks awesome, but you have to trade off on battery life.

here's an important question for you lucky m15x recipients: can you tell if the HD bay will accomodate a 12mm 2.5" drive, like a 750GB drive or one of the 1TB drives coming out? most laptops only support 9mm, but the macbook pro 13 actually supported the 12mm ones...

Well, I've been looking for this laptop a lot,and I'm hoping to upgrade to this system before the year ends, it all depends on my wallet for the next months lol.

So i've been wondering about the user's complains about power modes, but it doesn't strike me as a real problem, cause most probably these will be solved through bios updates.

What really bothers me is battery life, i don't know if it would work, but disabling the gfx card from device manager should cut off the power shouldn't it? It's a measure i'm willing to take on trips or whenever i need a longer battery life.

so if it isn't much trouble could i ask sleey0 or somebody else with the time to test the battery life, with the 260m disabled from the device manager?

I apologize if i said something stupid, i'm a bit noobish.

The 2:15 hour mark is really just fine for me. Right about where I want it actually. I wasn't expecting anything phenomenal out of it....it's a gaming rig, whether you think it is or not. I don't need a TON of portability, but it's enough to get me through a class or two (and I have outlets available in most rooms) and for weekend D&D sessions and stuff though where I need books on hand at random times, it's perfect.

Well seeing the complaints it is fairly discouraging to get this notebook. I might just go with the Asus republic of gamers notebook later this fall.

I know people with the Asus G51Vx which has the GTX260m undervolted their GPU to increase the battery life. Maybe someone can also do it with the M15x to increase battery life.

People are nuts in this forum. For example instead of undervolting the GTX260m, Sleey0 kindly put a 280m on it...

People can have priorities so different. lol

Bubbamel did you call dell to see what the deal with stealth mode is? You said if it wasn't for the battery life youd have kept it. What is the difference you had in balanced and powersaver? I get only about 5-10 mins less in balanced and see no studdering at all. Im still really pissed about the stealthmode not working seems like a major thing to miss. Other then that and the scratch that it came with I'm greatly enjoying this thing.

I got the "we will look into it" line. I really do want to know what is the function of the stealth on this laptop. When on balanced, it is not too bad, but I do notice some lag (getting concerned about this). As soon as I try powersaver, it is almost unusable for me but does add a "whopping" 15 mins. *end sarcasm* :D Sorry to hear about the scratch though Uroboros. Interesting, I am starting to notice some missing keystrokes. (had to fix many words before I posted) <----currently on battery (balanced)

Yeah I just checked the dell page again to make sure I'm not crazy it clearly says "If you are on the go and need to run on battery life alone, select Stealth Mode to reduce power consumption."

Clearly something is amiss. I'm sorry to hear its not running very well in balanced mode I am not experiencing any problems with it other then the studdering in power saving mode and it misses key strokes when in power saving.

Ok, im only on page 140 or something so someone may have said this already but the i7 boards dont have integrated gfx, so the gpu cant be turned off.

That is correct, but I was under the impression that stealth mode underclocked the GPU and CPU to draw less power, therefore increasing battery life. Maybe stealth has not been unlocked by the current bios?

Wow bubba i spoke to soon on the missing key strokes, I see exactly what your talking about, I thought it might just be a new keyboard sticking a little bit but when you plug it in it stops completely. Man I really hope a few updates/drivers will fix this because I dont want to have to send this back I love the screen and feel of the laptop too much I just want it to work on battery. Interestingly enough I was actually gaming on battery power early getting really good framerates and didn't even notice the missing key strokes thing until I just tested it in word pad.

Wow I mean it really cant type right without the being plugged in no matter what mode its in, I'm calling Dell tomarrow afternoon and they better tell me what I want to hear.

Ok, to see if you have the key problems, run the computer on battery only and switch the vista power settings to either balanced or power saver, then try typing a sentence at your normal speed, and see if you have a key stroke problem with lag. :D

Well bubba were in the same boat. I really really like my laptop and the thought of sending it back bums me out hard. Cant imagine giving this thing up but in its current state it is UNUSABLE with the battery. I cant even type properly in normal high performance mode on battery life it misses about 1 in 10 key strokes on battery. Ill be calling AW at 2 when I get outta class. Is there a way to skip dell and get right in contact with some people at AW because I need answers not some crappy indian tech support where they have never seen or touched an m15x.

Plugged in this thing is amazing, games like a beast, quiet, and most importantly for me the screen is beautiful.

Well, I've read through the last 20 pages or so, and the two main complaints seem to be the stealth function not working properly, and the magnesium casing instead of an aluminium one?

Now in my case I will have the laptop plugged in 95% of the time, and while plugged in there don't seem to be any difficulties, am I right?

And the laptop will be brought along quite a lot, so the lighter casing (compared to aluminium) will actually be a pro for me :)

I bought this laptop because I needed a mobile powerhouse, and the Clevo 860cu was around 10% more expensive when configured the same way as the m15x (€1681 vs €1.800something), and the build quality seemed to be better (handles heat better, sturdier, etc).

With these things in mind, do you think I will be satisfied with my purchase?
All this negative talk kinda scared me off a bit :(
