    STO is Star Trek Online.

I got my Laptop today. The second I turned it on, I saw a bright pixel. I called Dell Support and he used GoToAssist and took over my laptop and installed a driver and it did nothing. I tech will call me in a few days and they will install a new screen. I am pretty happy otherwise, but I was on the phone for 1:45, so I haven't had a chance try anything yet. I am debating if I should do a clean install of Windows 7 or not.

Damn, getting a dead pixel upon opening a new system is a major buzz kill. Hopefully the replacement they give you is a good one. Make sure you have the manual readily available for the tech in case he's never worked on an M15x (chances are he hasn't).

    Hello Guys!

I just received my Alienware and I'm loving it so far everything is running fine except a few questionable software/hardware, my questions are I just did a fresh install of Win 7 and when I goto my "Device Manager" I'm seeing an "Unknown Device" Can anyone tell me what that is?

Also, "facap, FastAccess Video Capture" is disable does anyone know what that is and why it's disabled in my Device Manager?

Does anyone know how to disable the light around the touchpad without disabling the touchpad itself, and without going into total dark mode?

    Thanks

Hello, all. :) This is my first post on these forums; though, I have been a long-time lurker here. I just wanted to add that I recently purchased a M15x and am happily awaiting it's delivery in mid-Jan. The basic specs are as follow:

    1. Intel Core i7 820QM 1.73GHz (3.06GHz Turbo Mode, 8MB Cache)

    2. 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz 2 x 2048MB

    3. 15.6-inch Wide FHD 1920x1080 (1080p) WLED

    4. 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M

    5. Case (Lunar Silver).

If any of you have suggestions for (over-clocking, upgrading mem./graphics/hard or optical drives) for improving my system please feel free to list them here. I am following this thread closely and you may also feel free to pm or email me.

the first one is the drop sensor: either update the driver or uninstall accelerometer.
the second is the webcam which will need a driver and/or software if you want to use it -- or at least mine did. Couldn't find any operating software on the Dell site for the webcam, so I installed the free version of CyberLink youcam and that seems to work fine plus it cleans up the queary in device manager.

I just clean installed and then installed all the correct drivers from Dell's website. After installing the free fall sensor thing for the HDD, I no longer have any unknown devices. If you still have an unknown device after installing that, then you must of skipped one of the drivers that you need. Make sure you installed them all.

I'm debating whether to get the M15x or the Sager np8690.

Has anyone faced any heat issues with this laptop? Also, how much better is the gtx 280m compared to the gtx 260m.

    Thanks in advance.

I read before purchasing that the M15x touchpad sucked. But, I've heard that bout many other laptops and didn't think they were that bad. BUT IT REALLY DOES SUCK HORRIBLY. I MEAN, IT'S ALMOST UNUSABLE TO ME!

How does anyone use this crap touchpad? It lags and it so slow when moving it.

THANKS MOO! I uninstalled it from the device manager and selected to remove the driver hardware. Restarted, and man what a difference! :D WAY BETTER!

I wish someone would have an organized page with all the problems/fixs for the M15x and M17x.

Since I'm a new owner I really would appreciate tips/tricks for clean installing and getting the most out of this system. So far I really like it! :D

Now since uninstalling the touchpad driver, the light around the touchpad is gone. Also, the OSD isn't working anymore. I guess I should try reinstalling the AW OSD?

Yeah I tried that and it doesn't work for me. I guess I'll uninstall the command center and OSD and then reinstall. Right now, command center won't open the Touch part. I click it and nothing happens.

I'm gonna try the Synaptics driver at the link and see it it enables multitouch support.

I reinstalled OSD and Commend Center and it's still the same. The Touch section in Commend doesn't do anything. And the OSD doesn't work unless I go to the Launch.exe and click it. Then it works.

Tried the other Synaptics and there are no multitouch gestures I guess.

Should I try a fresh install of windows? I should mention that I didn't reinstall using the disc from Dell, I used my own legal copy of W7 Pro. Isn't that the same though, or does the dell disc have special tweaks/drivers for this system?

So when you fresh install do you just skip the Synaptics driver and let windows install it's own?

BTW, Do the OSD and Command Center need to be installed in a certain order?

I installed all the drivers on the site. Is that recommended?

Have had my M15x for exactly a month now, and it is a pleasure to use it, everything is smooth, and gaming is incredible.

    However I got 2 problems:
    1. When I turn on my laptop the screen is totally black, I can't see anything until I get to the Win7 login screen. If i press F2 to get into BIOS, I can hear the "click" so I know I am in BIOS, but the screen is still black.
Maybe it's something to do with me having just updated to the A02 BIOS?

    2. Very often when I have sleep mode on, the computer wakes itself up. Sometimes it's just after a minute in sleep mode, and sometimes it's after 20 minutes, VERY annoying! It's been like this ever since the first day I think.

    / Jonas :)

    My experience with new M15x:
Ordered on Dec. 21st to replace both my desktop (Q6600/8800Ultra) and HP craptop:
    i720, 4GB 1333, 500GB 7200, 1920x1080, DVD no Bluray, 9cell battery, 2 year care.
also ordered backpack and displayport->DVI adapter.

Arrived at my door Dec. 31st (East Coast Canada).
    no bad pixels, A02 bios.
Uninstalled macafee and dell "storage locker".
System running flawlessly. very fast and very quiet. fans spin up only in gaming, )(which I've had great frame rates in L4D and L4D2, portal).

Use at my desk with USB hubs to attach keyboard, mouse, printer, etc, etc., and the display port to DVI adaptor to use my 27" Samsung 1920x1200 monitor. Great for gaming as well as flash development and general windows stuff.

Love this machine and would recommend to any gamer who doesn't require highest resolutions and max AA/FSAA. If you simply MUST have that type of performance, stick with desktop or M17X w/dual 280x.

and, you know I really find the touchpad is OK. I use a mouse 95% of the time, but for just casual stuff - no problem with touchpad. Haven't tried with battery power yet, and likely will rarely use on battery.

    :) :) :)

I fresh installed shortly after getting mine. Did the system have any custom theme stuff other than the wallpapers and login screen? Cause I wasn't thinking and now I'd kinda like them back. Is there a way to get 'em back? I left the recovery partition.

The first problem sounds abnormal to me. It should be displaying in text mode at that point. The second issue...I'd guess maybe some USB device is waking it up, or something like that. Is anything attached? You can sometimes set things like that individually, though I can't remember how off hand since...well I was going to say since I haven't had hardware that does that, but actually I don't really know since I usually shut down instead of sleeping.
