my windows experience score is 4.9 and im using the newest driver. also just realized that my optical drive wont even accept a disc FML. every time he comes something else s up
-
also nice job caduceusnz, totally agree with your throttling statement. -
oh sorry 4.7
Processor.....4.7
Memory.......7.2
Graphics......6.7
Gaming.......6.7
Hard Disk....5.9 -
Hmm throttling perhaps?
Everything else sounds normal. -
well i have gpu-z running during the assesment and there is no throttling....that i have seen
-
score just jumped to a 5.9
-
Then stealth mode could be on without you knowing?
I dont know, I'm not a pro but 4.7 is a lame score for a high end computer..
EDIT: Lolwut? This is more like it?
What have you done? -
your cpu score seems low, what cpu do you have????? can anyone with 720 confirm this score.(4.7)
edit: 5.9 seem right, what is cpu score now? -
cpu score is now 6.9, i just re-ran it who knows what changed.
-
There is no way i7 gets 4.7 as my pentium D gets 4.5
-
i guess crysis would be a good game to run while using gpu-z to test for throttling? any other suggestions?
-
so is everything good then, yeah 4.7 for cpu was funny, i was like what the hell.
also i recommend just enjoying your laptop, don't waste to much time trying to find throttling. -
Ugh ive been checking my email and order status like every 5 minutes lol hoping that my m15x got shipped. Its officially in boxing stage, been in it since this morning. Whee I can lay in me bed and play that game... ugh sorry im just way too excited now

Boxing takes 3-4 days usually.
Sorry.... -
-
So when is this machine going to get an updated and more powerful graphics card, such as the 5870 or gtx 285m?
-
-
there are compatibility issues afaik -
when the cpu is at load, actually does't even need to be at load it can throttle, this thread explains it better.

Hi peeps i have a question for u guys and gals out there, i have been trying to play bluray files on lappy from H/D but the picture keeps blocking up so to speak all the time , i have codecs from cccp website that work on my brothers sony laptop fine, i am trying to use media player 12.
everthing else works fine, i dont have a bluray dvd player on this system.
any help on this would be appreciated -
-
I use PowerDVD 9 which I am very happy with I must admit. I am not aware of any free programs which enable blu-ray disk playback. However, if you want to play High definition content on media player, I suggest you download the K-lite and HDTV Pump codecs along with Media Player Classic. Also, on the driver DVD supplied with your alienware, you should find a version of powerDVD8. Good luck -
Hi,
I only just joined this forum as I have an inquiry concerning my laptop to which I found no answer on the web. I received my M15X with a 7,200rpm Hard drive which only rates at 5.9 in the windows index and as a srious gamer, I craved for quicker load times in my games as well as overall on my system. Therefor I purchased an SSD from OCZ and slapped it in there. Easy process, rapid setup of windows 7 Pro, installed chipsed, trackpad and video (195.62) drivers. After which I installed a few codecs, changed my browser to chrome and installed Steam along with Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare. Now!Thats where the troubles start. Running Windows 7 index for the first time, I get good scores, with a minimum of 6.8. The games run smoothly, at 40 + fps at max res with max settings and varying AA settings. Then I plug my display port to HDMI adapter to connect to my Samsung HD screen and all of a sudden it all goes wrong. Framerates drop to 15-25 fps (measured using fraps and in-game console) which makes the experience distastful. So here's what I tried; Uninstalling the video driver and re-installing the same one and then a driver from laptopvideo2go, none of both fixing the issue. I ran the test and the scores for video performance had dropped to 4.3, compared to the 6.8 found prior. Then, rage taking over, I formated and re-installed my OS (2-4 times) and I got the same error every-time. Then I threw my other HD back in there and it works fine with the exact same drivers installed. Another fact is that when I shutdown my laptop with the display-port connected, it will restart every-time! Quite extroardinary I found. Sorry this post is so long, hope I didn't waste your time and if I did, did so by raising your interest for this weird issue.
Any clues or advice from people with the same issue (if any) is welcome
Kindest regards,
Mike. -
Sounds like you are running both displays at the same time. You have to go into setting and set it for your external display only. Sorry i would help more but i'm away from the laptop at the moment. Using iphone rite now
-
Best media player known to men and doesnt require any codecs to be installed -
-
Good ol' VLC, always here to save the evening when WMP ruins it! 8D
-
Hey Inappropriate, I just find strange that this problem only occurs on the SSD, I see you have an Intel yourself
I contacted OCZ and they seem quite keen on changing them over. See how we go from there. Sorry I'm only jumping in and out of the forum at large intervalls but I have this dissertation due in a week and I have barely started writing it :/ Until next time, best regards.

Well once more since no one wants to my question! when is the m15x going to get a refresh with a rgb led screen and ati 4870 or 5870?
-
no idea, it hasn't even been mentioned or rumored or anything, the 5870 is a maybe like 50 50, no mention on the rgb led, and the 1080p screen is already very nice. and i doubt the would put the 4870 in there i read somewhere there would be a compatibility problem something about mxm or something, but the 5870 will work in it just hasn't been announced.
-
Ok thanks, how much do you think the 5870 will cost? How good is the 1080P screen is? Well once you go RGB LED you don't go back believe me, it is just amazing.

Aloha guys,
I am inches away form buying one of these. Going to put half the money on my prepaid card now. The other half tomorrow.
I was wondering about Keyboard quality. Like key travel, clicky-ness, overall feel?
Also, about overall build quality. Especially, quality of the Hinges?
Are the hinges 'Medal' or 'Plastic'?
------
Sorry if these questions have already been answered. I googled alot. but this 3 part thread is vary long. -
About the SSD questions.
I have a OCZ 30GB Vertex and I, and all other owners, have nothing but good things to say about it. I'm going to get a 60GB form Amazon for $225 with FREE shipping.
They have TRIM ! They are Faster then the Intel SSD's no-matter what you may read. They are vary high quality. The Best on the market. They are also cheaper then the Intel SSD's
To top it off. OCZ has The Best costumer support you will EVER find in any company. Just go check out the OCZ forums of there SSD's. You'll read what I'm talking about.
(Just don't buy any SSD other then OCZ Vertex(or newer) or Intel.)
P.S. YES SSD's are CRAZY Fast! You'll never go back to a mechanical HDD. -
I read that SSD have fast read speed but have a significantly slower write speed...
Either way, i ordered a SSD 256 gig on my Girlfriend's XPS and they do read crazy fast. Never bothered to test the write speed since she's always on it though, lol. -
Ya, your right that is the case i.e. fast read, slow write. with Most SSD's
However, that is what makes the OCZ Vertex and the Intel drives so good.
Vertex
Read speed >250MB/s
Write speed >220MB/s
----------
Aside from the maker of the SSD. The big thing that you need to have is a flash Controller with Cache and lots of it. That is what produced the fast Write speed and stopped the studdering problem found on older SSD's. The Turbo Vertex has two flash controllers. You also need a SSD that supports TRIM.
Edit:write and that is enough about SSD's this is a M15x thread. I said what I wanted to say. Others can put their option if they wish.
-
It's spelled WRITE.

Hi Guys,
Currently I have a choice to make.
Dell is sending me an m15x replacement .They have sent me 2 quotations
One with Core i7 920XM and 4gb RAm and the other with 8gb ram ddr3 1333mhz with 820QM
Which quotation shud i choose Extreme Edition CPU or 8gb ram? -
I'd go for the 920xm..
-
Dude, go for the 920XM. 4GB is more then enough RAM. Also, you can easily buy/install more RAM down the road. However, replacing the CPU, while doable, is certainly much more risky and hard. Like maybe you will would have trouble getting the heat sink to line up just right. Also, the price of 4GB RAM stick should drop in the future. Some say that 8GB of RAM will Slow down your computer. Like when Windows Boots it writes all the RAM with 0's so that would take longer.
If you get a SSD then there would be no need to have more stuff cached in RAM because the SSD is so fast -
Yep, what ^^ said. The 920 is a $500 plus upgrade. You can get 4g RAM for much less....
-
Simple choice indeed, the 920XM is the way to go 8D

First impressions:
Assembly was top notch, the only complaint I have is that the venting on the underside feels too weak. I could easily see putting it down by accident on a set of car keys and cracking the plastic on a vent - not good
keyboard is nice, it's not "clicky", but it has a definite complete press feel, it's very quiet. With headphones you could play a game and the machine would be very quiet even in a library or restaurant, I doubt the fans even get that loud.
Didn't check on the hinge material, but if feels very sturdy. One thing I like is that the pointed design with a point in the center of the lid is very useful for opening it up with one hand. Small point but I think you will see what I mean, you don't feel like you're putting any torsion on the hinges.
Screen has good, vibrant color, however on a totally black screen uneven lighting is apparent. A small issue in most cases, but... makes me glad I opted for the RGB LED
The folks I showed it too were all impressed, the AW machines now are serious head turners, if that's your thing.
My only other quibble was that along the top edge of the lid, there is a *slight* impression along it that it conformed slightly to something, likely the casting. I notice things like this most others miss, so DON'T worry about that. I also like to straighten pictures, so that tells you where I'm coming from and noticing defects in television pictures, etc, that others never noticed. That being the reason, design IS one of the reasons I opted for the Alienwares. The m15x is so cool, I could easily be happy with it, I just like the options on the m17x once the i7 was available. -
So, it looks like I belong in the M15x owners club now. Yay me.
Mine just shipped and should arrive in the next 3 - 5 days, I'm told (though the estimate on my shipping confirmation says it'll arrive on Feb 4).
Is there any kind of list of "standard tests" I should try out to the laptop through its paces, make sure everything is a-okay and (more or less) performing up to snuff and the same as everyone else who has an M15x?
