Hope someone can help me. I had overclocked my gtx 260m memory from 950mhz to 1100mhz. It run stable with no artifact using ATITOOl scan for two hours. My max temperature was 67C. I keep reading on the forum about how you should not overclocked your memory pass 1000mhz. So is it ok for me to run it that high? My overclocked speed is 600/1600/1100.

So is it a bad time to buy the M15x? I mean with throttling issue. I was thinking of just getting the bare minimum specs with the 1080p screen. Heavy gaming is for my desktop but I just want something portable (somewhat) to play like rts and watch movies etc. The thing I don't like about the M11x is my lack of control over parts and things I can fiddle with and have access to. The M15x seems to be a good laptop what wil allow me some room to play. I just can't get over the throttling. Any advice?

M15x throttling isn't as serious as it is made out to be, i can only speak for myself, but i haven't even seen any throttling with games and apps i use. i'm a heavy multitasker and the M15x has yet to let me down. its true thay in synthetic test the M15x does throttle but no game or app will ever push your computer that hard. i say go for it the M15x for sure is the best laptop i've ever used and i'm sure many others would say the same.

Is it also true that at bare minimum specs the M15x will not throttle? Cause all I want from it realy it to play a few games in windowed mode while I'm bored outdoors; maxed out Crysis 2 is for my monster at home lol. What kind of battery life would I expect with i3 and the 240m? Thanks man

This throttling is not a problem at all as it can be fixed by Rivatuner + throttlestop.

yeah, but i'm just telling him that he may not even need to do a fix, not all people run into throttling and the fix should only be done when need too. also 240m has 1gb video memory too, if anyone want to order with 240. and 240 has no throttling problems at all.

Just curious, what laptop case do you guys have for this beast. Should I bother looking for a 15.6 inch size case or go straight for the 17 inch?

M15x is the size of a regular 17" laptop but thicker. no 15" case can hold this beast and only a few 17" case can.

I have a Targus 15" that it BARELY fits into... It's a tight squeeze but the amount of cushion this thing has is phenomenal and i've yet to find another backpack under $50 that provides the protection that this one has.

On a system that's running i3 and the 240m, what kind of battery life am I looking at with the 9cell? How about during gaming non intensive games (ie, age of empires III lol)? thanks much

I'm seriously considering the low end M15x for more fun factor.

I just installed my OCZ Agility SSD w/ TRIM today and it is amazing. No Lag time whatsoever. Win 7 boots up in half the time. Programs open up lightning fast and my FPS at highest settings on 2 games so far has increased by at least 10-15 FPS but that could also be because of Throttle STOP and Riva Tuner or maybe a combo of all 3. Greatest investment you can do for your m15x is a SSD.

When I run the benchmark, my keyboard goes crazy and flashes yellow and red. Does this happen to anyone else?

The ONE time I can't find the video.... Arg...

I saw a video form CES with two identical Alienware M15x laptops One with a 160GB G2 Intel SSD and one a 250GB 72,000RPM

    Edit: 7,200RPM :p

The SSD was WAY, way faster. The SSD box had Way smother graphics. And of course the game loaded WAY faster.

Boy, I am Loving my new M15x :)

This laptop is crazy fast :) I just installed Win7 in VirtualBox with 2cores and it boots up in like 15secs. I also have a Intel G2 SSD so that helps a lot too.

Win7 in VirtualBox on my other laptop with a Faster OCZ SSD and a Core2 p8400 2.26Ghz Takes forever to boot. It also runs like crap.

I love this laptop :) Now I can do Real Work in VM's.

    -------------
Just to let anyone passing by know. The M15x is All Medal. The top cover, you know the back of the LCD, That is Medal NOT plastic.

Some games actually use the alienfx sdk (which is very limited) which was provided by Dell. There arent many such games, but its still a nice touch ^^

My M15x shipped yesterday and has an EDD of 2/13, which is Saturday. Has Anyone ever had a Dell shipment arrive on a Saturday? I went with 3-5 day shipping, so I don't see how I could have weekend delivery, unless they shipped my laptop via USPS.

Hi all, for all those M15X lovers you are, I have a question regarding SSDs.
I have this OCZ Vertex 60Gb and I'm getting read speeds of 130Mbps average. Anyone with a similar drive, what do you get in read/write speeds with HD-tune?
    Cheerio!

    Hi Inappropriate, you! again :)
Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller (6.1.7600.16385) MSAHCI with firmware 1.4 for Trim.
Does that mean the speed is limited by the controller?
If so, how did you optimize it for your intel?
    Thanks for your help

seems like you have the right controller and yes the controller does effect the performance of your ssd. i not really familiar with your ssd and have to do some digging for more info. in the mean while try to find mandrake, he should be somewhere in this forum, pm him he is the ssd man around here. also have you tried crystal disk mark, seems more reliable to me.

ok did some digging, seq read speed is rated for 260mb/s so you should atleast get over 200mb/s. i'll see what else i can dig up for firmware. but run crystal disk mark first to confirm speed.

ok did some more digging, what series of the ocz are you using? the solid 2 series have a a read of 125 mb/s and write of 80mb/s. so if this is what you have then you are right on point.

    Sorry, was watching Naked Gun.
Thanks for all the digging man, I'll have a look at crystal disk mark.
I am quite sure I have the most recent series 2 OCZ Vertex SSD which, according to the specs has read speeds of up to 230Mbps.
I'll attempt contacting Mandrake like you suggested, although I don't know what he could add to what you already said.

Depends what you want. I wanted something as slim as possible to fit this beast to bring to school, because i find big bulky napsacks to be Fugly. lol... After alot of snooping around, i picked up a Belkin Slim Backpack for 15.4 inch laptops, and i have to say, its probably the slimest laptop bag ever created, and quite stylish too. And yes it fits the M15x, just barely, but it fits :). People will have no idea your carrying this monster in such a tiny backpack, its awesome. I managed to fit the M15x along with the power cables, mouse, and 2-3 120page copybooks, a water bottle and my ipod, but this was basicly the max. And padding is also decent all around, and double cushion on the bottom, so your laptop will survive quite abit :). Here's the link:

    http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=375643

There even the Energy Collection for 17'' laptops that you might want to check out, that will probably give you some extra room. But if you want the smallest package for the M15x like i did, get the slim back pack.

If you don't care about size, price, and want pure quality: Targus makes excellent bags, along with many others, but theres a whole thread for that...

Also, thought you guys would like to know, I surpassed the 2 hour mark running on battery power alone today with my 6cell battery :D :D :D. Something like 2hrs, 8mins :p. You just gotta know what sucks up the most juice, n disable it :). Oh yea i was browsing the net and running microsoft word at school :). BatteryCare has a nice feature that disables Win7 aero theme on battery mode automatically, which apprently uses GPU power to support it, so shutting it off buys you quite abit of battery life :)

Mine came with Firmware 1.3 and I got a significant boost in write speed by upgrading to 1.5. A word of warning tho, you gotta do the upgrade on another PC. To update the firmware you have to be in ATA mode but when I did that on the M15x it would not boot up and I had to clear the CMOS. The update worked fine on my desktop PC's eSATS connection.

    Hi,
I currently have the panasonic uj-235 drive in my hand.
Any guide or tricks on how to pry open the central console ,Especially the part that goes under the display over the hinge without breaking the ribbon cable or scratching the unit?
Also Should I call the DEll Technician or replace the optical drive on my own?
