Finally bit the bullet, got 10% off through EPP and begging with Dell Canada, so 1799 + tax Canadian. Probably not as good as the deals in the US. The only two things I changed from base config were to upgrade to the i7 720, and the GTX 260m.
Thinking of calling back and adding 1 year accidental...

Thnx for the help inappropriate... rep+ for all of this...It is a clicking noise.. and it is only when u start pushing it and does not remain through out the motion of the screen. And I have already installed the latest drivers but still the laptop restarts. The other M15x which I have does not restart when you shut it down, it has the older driver i.e. 186xx.

yeah i'm not sure what making the clicking noise. but try to use ccleaner to uninstall your nvidia driver and clean out the registry then reinstalling. there is something with the old driver that is causing this issue, with certain machines. yeah i used the old driver fine for a while but then a month into it the restart problem started happening.

    Personally I'd recommend 32bit

Having 64bit will only use up more ram and won't give you any real benefit.

Unless you plan on upgrading your ram soon - in that case go for 64Bit..

Otherwise it just takes up more space in your disk and ram for no benefit.

the command center power options didnt work whatsoever, so i totally uninstalled it and dont use it... also, i play wow, and im only getting around 20fps when i play solo with no other player models around. i checked the drivers and windows says theyre updated...

Check the stealth Mode. You might have it turned on. I would recommend installing the OSD mod created by "inappropriate name". It clearly states whether your stealth mode is on or off.

yeah, i noticed that afterwards. /facepalm.
but when i still had command center installed, i couldnt turn stealth mode off when it was on. anything i can do about that or should i just not use CC

stealth mode doesn't have anything to do with cc. only your osd work with stealth mode. just reinstall cc again and all should work fine. if the stealth button don't work, then turn off , take battery out and press power button for 10-20 sec. and put back and turn on again.

yeah i think it more the hinge making the sound, i think it is normal. its a pretty heavy lappy. also i just noticed that on my laptop the top right corner of the screen seems loose, you can kinda press it in and out, but on the left corner its really tight and can't push it at all. can you check if you have that too.
    thanks

no the fans shouldn't be on all the time. so check your cpu/gpu temps. the older m15x has a tendency to run hot. yes you can upgrade cpu, but maybe an ssd would be a better choice, you will get better overall system performance.

hi guys i live in dubai, i just buy the M15x i will used for gaming and work (illustrator, photoshop, After effects, Dreamweaver). i'm very heavy worker so i think the computer is perfect for me with his bad boy look :p i dont care about the weight of the laptop coz i dont take out a lot only 1 or 2 time per month, i was rendering some animation on after effect, it was very fast no heating, i think the laptop is more then a Gaming laptop it's like a workstation.
i would like to know if it can switch between the dedicated GPU and the inboard GPU if it have one.

    My system:
    720 Qm 4Gb 1333 500GB Disk GTX 260

there is only a single gpu card in the new M15x but if your doing something lite than you can use stealth mode to down clock your gpu.

Hey guys im new to this site so its 2 bad my first post is a problem >.<

Anyways my problem is when I start to play some games (i.e sims 3) my screen will flash and then go black and freeze. From there I cant do anything except force a restart. I read up and some said that this problem is due to my gfx drivers.. But I just received this computer 2 days ago.. you would think it would be up 2 date right? Anyway I tried to get drivers but 2 no avail at alienware.com. I tried manually searching for the driver and creating a MYHive account but my package never came with a invoice therefore I have no account#...

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Called Dell about my dead laptop and managed to convince them to send me a replacement instead of a repair. Should be back with an M15x in 2-4 weeks.

    Hey,

    First things First: Welcome!

okay, now lets discuss your problem. I do hope that you have an allpowerfull M15x. The invoice for the system comes seperately in your mail. Another issue is that you should not go to alienware.com but to dell.com for support. Alienware support (myHive) is only for older alienware computers. Now that dell has taken over its dell.com.

So, looking at your problem, please make sure that you are running not on Stealth mode (its the small button on the media bar which looks like a speedometer)and you are running on AC power. The drivers which came with your system should work.

If you confirmed that stealth mode is off and you are running on AC power, then go update the nvidia drivers. This can be done on nvidia.com for the latest video card drivers. Also try different fames and (or) install Furmark (google for it) and see if the same thing happens when running a benchmark. If the problem still occurs, you might have a faulty hardware part, which will most likely be the graphics card.

What dell will ask you, is to do an alienrespawn and try again. So you might as well do it (NOTE: it will delete all your data). If that doesnt work, you will have to call Dell and arrange a fix, which will most likely be exchanging your gfx card.
