We'll see. If the Nvidia motherboard is unable to hold for the duration of our warranties i'm sure we'll end up getting free upgrades

 

One thing that might cause a problem is the PCIe 1.0 speeds for discreet cards when using switchable Arandale.

 

With all this talk of the i7 processor, how does the i5 hold up since I'm trying to keep costs down (and this'll mainly be a gaming and surfing computer).

 

A base M17x would game with no issues. The RGBLED is the only upgrade I consider a must have.

 

its going to be an intel motherboard.
1. nvidia and intel is in a disput.
2. intel will not support sli thats why the first m17x used a nvidia board.
3. in order to put in sli pcb intel (or whatever name brand as evga asus) has to also pay nvidia for the technology
4. ati and intel had a contract where all there motherboard with dual pci-e configs must support crossfire before ati and amd join.


there for. if you where to try the 280m/260m it will work but not with sli.......

 

interesting don. we'll just keep it less complicated and stick with the ATI cards.

Yeah it's clear dell went with the ATi's because Nvidia and Intel are taking some time apart to think about their relationship

 

I have to believe the new cards will come as soon as they are available.

 

If this happens to my machine, I'll be contracting YOU to speak with Dell on my behalf. I am serious. You have an uncanny knack for getting good replacements out of Dell. I am only experienced at squeezing large sums of money--full refunds--out of their system.

Also, I can comfirm they will do the new M17x with an EPP purchase if you call (the new i7 M17x's aren't on the EPP website yet). Also, the sales rep on the phone gave me an additional $200 off if I went with a Dell preferred account, so you might want to ask them about it.

Big thanks to everyone here for letting me know about the refresh! I ordered an "old" M17x on Monday, then found this wonderful forum and was able to cancel my old order in time.

 

You're the first person with an American accent to say this, and as one with a very American accent--literally hints of the south and west--I try to avoid. Fine, I've got good reactions mostly, but some people can get judgemental due to political reasons.

Now when speaking of customer service, I can't say I have complaints. I usually get my points through anywhere without issue, and often get a friendly response. However, I do know that with Dell quite a few of the Indian techs got intimidated. Maybe that's why they handed me a very large refund instead of a replacement. So perhaps it isn't just the accent, but also the tone and choice of words.

Anyway, you're the guy who'll handle my case next time.

It looks like Dell ran out of 1333 MHz memory for the M17x. I don't see it on the configuration page anymore, only 1066 memory.

 

Thats cool, cuz when I order mine, maybe when the 5 series cards are out, maybe sooner, I got 1333MHz laying around

 

Hey all- It was just posted that a single 5870 scored Vantage GPU of P7370. For comparison sake a single 4870 scored 6K and an OC'ed 4870 scores 7K. I'm sure don has the exact numbers for the 4870.

 

Nice, can't wait to OC and reflash the 5870. Probably be doing that the day after the laptop arrives.

Very nice refresh for the M17x. Another reason why people should be careful when maxing out purchases of computers; especially during changing cycles like new CPUs!

True. But March is far away. I don't do purchases (or even plans) based on future releases. It's hard to pin them down.

 

NICE has an option for 1200p RGBLED? I'll be putting in an order in about a week or two with one 4870 for now...5870's shouldnt be THAT far off.

well this refresh looks all around pretty good..I am guessing no switchable graphics though unless you got an arrandale cpu.

Guess I will not bother buying a set of 4870s then and just wait till I can afford to replace the whole machine!
i7 and RGB (and much cheaper 4870s in this one ) are way too much for me to just ignore

That confused me, too but it's now part of the Advanced warranty. So pick your option with that and you'll be covered.
