Yeah I agree, if it was a 256 bit bus part with GDDR5 I'd definitely wait since the OC potential + huge memory bandwidth would do wonders at high resolution + AA thrown in. The 5870s will definitely be faster all around, I just don't see them being much of a performance leap.

Been told NO REPLACEMENT SYSTEM. Ive been offered a refund of £2300 plus my gfx card upgrade of £439.54 and my 2 yr warranty extension of £90 i think.

Apparently DELL dont offer Alienware AS REPLACEMENTS for DELL machines lol. Altho i was offered a replacement machine with a balance difference.

Well that's probably better for you. You can use that money and order a custom configuration instead of Dell configuring one for you.

 

Hi joker. Yeah but the ironry is that im being told NO then YES with a CASH difference. I think its evident that anyone will try it on and milk extra money from customers.Many companies deploy this same tactic.

 

Remember though that the 4870 was limited by GDDR3, the bandwidth available to the 5870s will be higher than the 4870s, if Dell is retarded enough to botch GDDR3 onto these with thier 128bit bus. The additional cooling potential just means we might be able to overclock that bit further (and at lower fan volume levels).

GDDR5 OFTEN (not always) overclocks fairly nicely, so bandwidth should definately be higher than the current cards, which as Joker so rightly says above about 256bit/GDDR5 will still offer better high res+AA performance
If it was 256bit it'd have an insane amount more bandwidth (perhaps unnecessary levels to be honest considering the core it's being partnered with), but then we'd be in the will it/will it not be GDDR5 situation again.

 

Nah Nevermind by this time next year for less there will be

- 32nm Quad Core Core i7 or Core i9 12MB L2 cache
- ATI DDR5 5xxx series GPU
- RGB LED thats a must have
- Bluray Drive/burner
- USB 3.0 likely

I canceled my order, next generation will destroy the M17x-R2 the M17x-R2 is like a slow evolution plus still at 45nm.

Plus its just slightly offensive that my 1 year old Studio 17 came with R G B LED display and a Bluray Drive

and even though the M17x-R2 would be close to $4,000 (my Studio 17 was $1,300) you still can't get a Bluray Drive option in a $4,000 machine.

I don't blame DELL aparently its a Source problem DELL can't buy Bluray drives anymore because everyone else buys them wait till Apple starts buying them by the Pallate load for its MacBook Pros.

People don't buy a $4000.00 laptop just to watch a blu-ray movie.

When I was placing my order for the R2 I emailed the rep the link to the dell forum article about the DPC latency. I told him thats why i'm ordering a new laptop. He was mildly interested. Gave me a $75 discount.

Are there any 3rd party Blu Ray drives that would work in the optical bay on the M17x-R2?

 

This is something I will be doing some research on as well... For now considering an external, we got 9 systems between PCs and laptops in our home network, only 2 have blu ray, so even if I get a blu ray for my M17X R2 the external would get use in the other systems, I am sure they will be available soon if they not already...
