I have ordered so many systems the past few years and none of them had dead pixels (seems to be pretty rare nowadays).
The last system that had one was a 17" Toshiba from Best Buy that I bought like 7 years ago![]()

Ok, so I got tired of waiting for AAFES to show the discount prices and called a Dell EPP sales rep yesterday. Was able to get the usual 10% EPP discount plus $50 off if I used my DPA. I said that doesn't make up for my savings by not paying tax through AAFES so I will wait and see if AAFES prices get discounted.
Called back to Dell EPP today and got a different sales rep. Told her I am a government contractor (which I am) and was wondering if I could get a better quote than yesterday. She said she could probably work a better price and checked with her manager. She came back and said if I use my DPA I can get another $150 off the first quote. So, 10% EPP plus $200 off (original $50 + this $150). So bascially 15% off total. I told her: "I'll take it!". It made up what I would save on taxes through AAFES and I am going to get the usual 12 months free interest with my DPA.
So I got: M17xR2, i7 820QM, 4GB 1333 MHz RAM, Dual ATI cards, RGB LED, 320GB HDD, Intel 6300 WiFi
Just goes to show you have to keep at em until you get the right sales rep and the deal you want.

Does that wifi card upgrade improve speed much? Is it worth it?
just wondering.
-
no i really doubt it
-
I went with the n half-min card as I didn't see the need to spend and extra $50 for another n card

same here .... wifi is wifi specially when you still have G

i had the space black m17x r1 (ive obviously returned it).
the aluminum was a fingerprint magnet. I couldn't stand how utterly nasty and oily it looked after barely touching it. i spoke to one person who had the silver model and they claim they do not see fingerprints on the silver... can anyone also confirm this? -
Well IDK, i have a silver area-51 m5790 (plastic) and i never notice any finger prints, except for like this greasy substance from sweating, on the palm rest because this laptop runs hot.
-
on my silver i didn't notice any huge fingerprints as i see on space black on some review photos. pure silver is a fingerprint resistant, you know
so i suppose i can confirm this
-
To take advantage of additional speeds you need a supporting infrastructure also. In other words if you have an old wireless router it won't make a difference. It has the possibility of being better or worse depending on model and firmware. It will NOT help your internet speeds because that will be limited to the speed your ISP provides you.
-
I went with the Intel this time simply because of the driver issues I had with the AW1510.
-
From my experience, the 1520 uses an Atheros chipset.
I have had great experience with Atheros chipsets in the past (sometimes better than Intel). -
Not in my Thinkpad but it's old. The Intel 5300 seem to work best in my house. We'll see if the 6300 is ok also.
-
Intel is hit or miss sometimes.
I haven't had many issues but my wife's Z has crazy issues.
Besides, I don't have an n router so it doesn't matter which n card I get really

I posted I think in a different thread on this, but the m15x in Lunar Shadow I am sitting on doesn't show fingerprints, and I have relatively oily skin. My iPhone always looks like a Greased Grill at Waffle House too, so my use is a fair test of the question.
-
The black R1 I had was a magnet, but the red wasn't.
I went with silver this time, anyway

I could gel my hair with the grease on my iPhone, so my next M17x will definitely be Lunar Silver. -
3G3 has a coating on the screen that helps :/
I got silver so when i sell it you cant see the scratchs -

Follow up: Talked with Dell and was told something like "there was an illegal status with the DVD drive (some internal term he said) and they were incompatible so all orders for the R2 will be cancelled and re-created once the SKU is approved. ? Something more about it being the last week of their fiscal year so he couldn't put an expedite request for my new order in (or any order) until after next week.
Is anyone else (everyone??) seeing their orders cancelled and re-created???? -

I would like to know for certain that we will be able to replace the DVD drive with a blue ray drive (from dell or 3rd party) at a later date??
No one seems to have answered this question that I and several others have asked. Does anyone know???
Thanks so much
-
My order had the exact same problem with the DVD drive. Not sure why he couldn't re-enter it, my rep was able to do so yesterday without any trouble. My rep also claimed he had my order expedited, but who knows if it actually affects anything.

Are they easy to install? -
Depends on you're confort level and knowledge of taking apart the system.
Time consuming, yes. Difficult, no. -
So I take it it's not just a screw on the bottom of the system to you unscrew and then pop out the drive (like my Inspiron 9400)?
That kind of sucks but it's not like I haven't taken apart my system before. Actually one of the reasons I like the M17x is that I can actually get to the fans to clean them (as my 9400 could have used that feature). -
Damn so this dvdrom sku thing seems serious and I see lots of ppl got their order cAncelled. I wonder why mine wasn't yet. I just spoke to a rep who ofcourse didn't know anything about that and said that mine is still in production.
-
Mine seems fine and hasn't been cancelled.
What's the SKU number that is getting orders cancelled? -
I believe its:
313-8565 Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
But i ordered mine the 1/18, no cancelations so far. I called dell 5 min ago and the dude assured me that my order should be going out by next week (2/2-2/5/) So i dont think its the necessarily the cd-rom. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
313-8565 Slot-Load Dual Layer DVD Burner (DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
-
I wouldn't trust him.
-
You guys will be in for a nice cancellation shock.
-
Yours was cancelled too?
-
Dell (pakistan or india) is going to be in for a nice explitive.
-
Good.
I got the quicksilver one per my order page
-
I'm seeing drives with a part number of CA10N, wonder if this drive would work?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
that is what is in my machine from dell so I would say it works
They have firmware updates for it on their driver page for the M17x -
Thanks. May go ahead and get it then. Then jut have to wait for the M17x to actually come in lol.
