Roger that... I guarantee you they will use the stupid reverse Mxm spec that they use in all of their laptops.
Why couldn't you use CCC for m17x 4870's? I am hoping that works for the m5870's because it makes it very easy to do incremental changes.
Thanks again, and congrats on the system guys!

Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
i look at all the thread posts and can find where joker mention how to overclock using rivatuner -
Overdrive is not an option because the mobile 4870 doesn't support it. There might be a way to hack it.
When you get your system boot off a thumb drive and use atiflash to read the info off the cards. I'm sure Vic will have a whole tutorial on it.
To read the card/s:
atiflash -i
To save the bios using adapter "0":
atiflash -s 0 biosname.rom
To flash a new bios to adapter "0":
atiflash -p 0 newbiosname.rom
Just use RBE to change your voltages or clocks. -
As an FYI I did try this with MSI Afterburner but it didn't work for me.
-
Excellent. I have used rivatuner to OC my desktop Ati's and control fanspeed before, so I can't wait to see if it works on the 5870's. HWmonitor is not working on Ati's temp measurements, right? I will have to try something else to monitor them.
-
gpuz and everest should work.
-
and HWiNFO32 also has built in monitoring

HWinfo32 does not read the ATI temps

cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
ya it always crashes when reading the ATI temp sensor
I was less than thrilled lol -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
it doesn't work for you ? wonder how joker did that -
Everest temps on the taskbar FTW.
-
Awesome. Looks like I will use everest for temps. I know you guys are busy checking out your new systems, but when you get a chance could you run a bench on Dirt2 Demo? A G73 video review came out yesterday and they benched the 5870m at 42fps @ 1920x1080 4xaa on high settings. Maybe that could give us an idea of where that puts the mobile 5870 compared to a nice 4870 xfire setup.
EDIT: NVM about the Dirt2 bench. I just realized that score was with the additional overhead of Dx11 so it won't be an apples to apples comparison. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
This is what Joker said in an earlier post:
"Ok one more bit of good news for those that don't want to do vbios flashing for overclocking. I suspected last night that the Rivatuner .cfg device id addition would work in enabling OC'ing and it does:
Instructions are simple:
1. Download RivaTuner
2. Download GPU-Z
3. Take the last 4 letters of your device id (e.g. 945A is mine)
4. Open up rivatuner's cfg file with notepad
5. Scroll to GPU_1002 and find RV770. Add in your device id + 'h' (e.g. 945Ah) and save the file. Back up the original cfg and replace it with the new one.
6. Click the Power User tab in RivaTuner
7. Find Rivatuner\System and find "ATiMultiGPUClockControl" and set it to 1. Next locate Rivatuner\Overclocking\ATi and find "EnableDriverLevel3DClockControl" and "EnableDriverLevelControl" and choose 1 for both.
8. Run furmark + gpuz to watch the clocks after setting them in RivaTuner and they should hold. They did when I just tested."
Sorry, I've lost the thread reference. -
Perhaps, but since so many people have this computer already I wish they would just test some games, after all this is a gaming laptop. Seems like all they want to do is bury themselves in trying to OC everything.

Welcome to the AW forums
lol

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
How embarrassing.
-
Yes, sometimes it crashes on me when Everest is reading the GPU temp. I think this is the ATI specific issue.
-
Some people buy these machines with the sole purpose of benchmarking and gaming is an afterthought ...
To each is own
...
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
thanks revelator
-
I am not an overclocker personally so I don't plan on doing anything to my AW when I get it unless someone posts a step-by-step guide to do it and keep everything safely functional. I also realize that perhaps the m17x-r2 is an overclockers paradise and it will be a while before they get every bit of performance they want from their computer. On the other hand, when I pay $2500 for a gaming laptop I expect it to have relatively good performance out of the box. I am sure though that at least one person who has this will play games on it and I hope they will look past the flashing and voltages and post some fps numbers.
-
I will run a couple benchmarks to see where my machine stands then its on to gaming for me
... I used to enjoy benchmarking quite abit but now i just want to game in my free time...
-
I think that meant that you will run some gaming benchmarks, if that's the case then thanks, I look forward to your results.
-
I wonder what would happen if I called dell, and complained about the auto dimming , and how the screen is too dim.. wonder if they'd give me a R2 with RGB
-
Well Dondadah has had 2 Motherboards replaced, 3 sets of GPUs , Fans,Keyboards, CPU heatsink and a few other things i cant even remember and they were not willing to give him an upgrade ....
So because your screen Dims does not sound like much of a reason to give you a new machine
..
-
Once I get mine, it's gaming time right when I open the box, so i'll give you updates when that happens
-
Anyone has plans to drop a Bluray on this thing? I'm not really into it, but this one is increasingly likely to be a keeper for quite a while.
-
weddingvideos4u Notebook Consultant
I have one on order, but as its a replacement may take awhile. no order number generated yet.
specs in sig -
How did you get Bluray on it? Or did you get it as a separate item?
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Well if its anything like my M980NU, if you find out which connector it uses, presumably SATA, you can buy an aftermarket drive off of ebay
Just swap the drives carefully, and keep the original drive if necessary for warranty returns. Oh, might also be worth uninstalling the Blu-Ray's drivers via device manager and letting it redetect on restart, you shouldnt need to, but my M980NU solid froze twice after I installed the drive, but hasn't done it again in the week since letting 7 redetect the appropriate driver etc...although that could just be my Nvidia chipset/related drivers being tempermental.
One of my family members managed to find me a reader on the bay for £55 ($90ish) so when they offered, was too good an offer to turn down
The bezel on your drive right now should be removeable anyway, so it wont look any different on the outside if fitted properly. -

Its a replacement for my r1 that had blueray,
before you say anything i had alot of problems and have taken 2 months almost to get this authorised.
I had all the usual problems lattency stutter etc but also the service engineer broke my system in december -
Nice. You would be the first one to get an R2 for R1 swap. It's gonna be day and night. Congrats!
-
weddingvideos4u Notebook Consultant
Really dont want to say too much but beleive me its not been easy, again there are other factors involved not just the dpc latency and stuttering.
its not going to become a regular ocurance until after the line is dicontinued
have not got my order number yet so stil nervous! -
I understand. Good luck, and welcome to Team Awesome.
-
-
nice score
So should we setup a wager on who gets the higest scores out fo the R2 here lol -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Not too shabby. How are you finding them in games etc, I know you were a little bit worried about framerate hit before it arrived! -
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
you don't have a vantage run with tha gpu's overclocked ? -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Nice. High to date overall.
How many cores/threads are being utilized by 3dMarkVantage? -

Owners of the M17x-R2 Edition with the RGB LED, since this is a MAIN reason for getting this system, I would like to ask why there is not a lot of WOW and AHHH about this display? Is it really worth the $200+ upgrade price?

Get ready for an onslaught of "wow" and "ahhh" responses following your post. I've certainly seen a lot already.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Please trust me when I say that it is worth it! It is the best investment I have ever made, thanks to the awesome guys in this forum who convinced me to choose that option.
Every single one of us has commented on the screen and said it is awesome. I have never seen anything like it on a laptop and it is definitively WAY better than a standard CCFL.
edit: WOW..... AAAAAHHHH I LOVE IT!Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
And don't forget that you'll see more and more comment with each days, as, right now, only a handful got their new system, we are all waiting on them...

All i know is when i heard its so bright you actually have to turn it down i was smiling ear to ear.... If it aint burning my retinas im not happy

This is true. I especially want to hear from owners of the R1 M17x, because I was one of them and know that display.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
