yes high performance but i don't see flickering like joker only the micro stuttering on resident evil bench.

Do you think its safe to expect the 820qm to have no issues if Moo wasn't able to replicate it with the 720qm? Mine will be here tommorrow with the 820qm if you want it checked still.
-
Throttlestop is only for chipset/clock modulation, it has nothing to do with the GPU. If you set it to modulate at 87.5% then it might resolve the problem temporarily because it'll underclock the CPU. But then again we didn't pay $1000 to underclock out 920xm's -
BTW, I'm setting everything at 100%.
Edit: Worked until I OC'ed, bummer. -
-
Which driver are you using right now? I'm thinking of switching to the 9.12 hotfix. Throttlestop at 100% will just make sure your c0 state stays at or near 100% I helped beta test it during dev w/Kevin. It will modulate the clocks at about 3-4 sec intervals. It works great for the M15x since it has bios CPU throttling (I used rivatuner to bypass the GPU throttling for it). If this was a CPU throttling issue, we'd be golden with TS. -
Wait, witcher has an ES?
-
I'm using 9.12 without the hotfix. -

there's a 9.12 and then there's a hotfix for it?
-
yes don that is correct
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
thanks i gotta find the hotfix.

Wouldn't want my mouse to enlarge at random. lol
-
hahaha..i was laughing at that too when I first read it. -
Ok, just unboxed mine here at home and ran FurMark 1.8
I checked Xtreme burning mode as well as Displacement Mapping and Post FX, I had the power supply connected to my Kill-A-Watt.
I ran it for 15 minutes and had no crashes or flicker, the power draw was from 133 to 137 Watts max , idle power draw is 69.
Only thing I noticed was very low FPS, FPS= 4, is that normal?
If I disable Fur Rendering FPS jump up 153...
Oops got to run pick up my kids from karate, be back later... -
Thanks.
Hard to believe how much more watts the 920 consumes.... -
Well that settles it for me. Gonna send mine back for a refund. Ordering an i720 based one in a few mins. -
WTh ?
That's a 100w boost the 920 is pulling ... That's not right ...
Joker are your cards still overclocked ? -
Everything is at stock. I'll re-run the test again. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
where the power comsumption of the 920?
-
Yeah, crazy huh?
I wonder if he wasn't running in CF or something..... -
-
Yeah there's two furmarks for 1.8. I ran the multigpu furmark.
-
It was an i820 one..wish I had kept it now lol. -
That could be the difference bw 135W and 200W, along with the 920....

Ook guys, quick update *IMPORTANT*
I had made sure that Crossfire was enable when I ran the test before so I decided to disable Crossfire and ran test again, there was no change in power draw which means there was something wrong with the Crossfire settings. I rebooted and re-enabled Crossfire, checked on Device Manager, the 2 GPUs showing fine, results
All FurMark max settings checked, this time power draw is between 210 and 212 Watts, been running for 10 minutes with no crashes, FPS up to 11, that a lot better than 4FPS before!
I guess Crossfire didnt kick in at first boot, but it did after rebooting the system.
Now installing borderlands...
On a quick note, a lot happier at how the fur donut looks now, it was choppy before! -
-
-
how much performance is lost between the 720QM and the 920XM?
-
if you scroll down, you will see "Linked Adaptor" if crossfire is enabled... but it seems like it is now with the higher wattage and fps -
Thanks!
Running Borderlands now all settings max, looks absolutely beautiful and it runs like butter. awesome manOh, and power draw during Borderlands is 210 Watts
No Flicker or throttling so far!
My son playing Borderlands for now while I type on my desktop...
Loving the RGB monitor already, Borderlands never looked better

hi all,
i own an m17x r1 and due to the stuttering bull im trying to request for an r2 as replacement.
ive read through some of this lounge and noticed some people talking about throttling.
can i know more about this issue? does it happen for every r2 owner or does it only apply to those with the 920xm?
does it throttle randomly or is there a reason for the throttle(eg on battery/overheat)
does the problem seem unsolvable without having to spend days and months calling dell support like for the r1 stuttering issues? -

Youre going to have an "All Powerful" M17x-R2 without the top of the line 920xm? With last years video cards and a middle of the road i7 cpu is not appealing to me, I'll pass until this issue is fixed. Enough people complain about this and Dell will do what it takes to fix this.

dell will do what it takes to make people think they are fixing it, look at the nvidia issues on the R1 lol
-
i wouldnt accept anything under an 920xm since i paid for the qx9300 so i would want an extreme processor for replacement if im going to get an r2..
what exactly is the problem with the r2s that have 920xms? constant throttles or random?
anyone with the 920xms having or not having this problem that can clarify? -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
if you had the qx9300 bought from dell your replacement would have an 920xm unless you are the worst negotiator known to man.....
-
yea thats why id like to know what kind of problems im getting myself into if i ask for an r2 with 920xm. if the throttling issues apply to all 920xm owners then maybe i should wait till the problem is solved before asking for one or ill get myself into another problem where my laptop cant be anything else except a paperweight due to a design flaw and dell says WE ARE FIXING IT and has no solution after 6 months
-
Stay away from 920xm for now. Mine is just sitting in the other room, I spent 2 days getting it going and I'm tired of the damn thing. -
so the throttling is kinda permanent, happening all the time or just random?
what kind of flickers is it? screen turning black then back again or like screen tearing?
why cant dell get anything right. first chipset problem now power supply problem. i think ill drag the case till the 5870s come out then get em in my replacement. they owe me for all this crap.. xps 1730 to m17x r1 and possibly screwed r2. and they refuse to give a refund -
Hey all, I'm going to college soon so I'm investing in this blazing fast laptop so that it will still be competent in 5 years. So far my build is: M17x i7 920; rgb LED; 8gb 1333mhz; windows 7 ultimate; 250gb &320gb hdd; basic build video card. The only thing holding me back from purchasing right now is the whole issue with the damn blu ray drives. From what I've read dell should be putting the drives back up this month right? I'm going to be using the laptop as a desktop replacement/entertainment center and a little gaming for catharsis.
-
Do not plan on using it for more than 2 years (even 2 is 2 optimistic IMO).
The BlueRay should be back soon, might be a reason to wait a bit. -
That issue should not have happened had Dell perform their testing right. -
Edit: nm, still freezes if all 4 cores are pushed to 2.1 ghz even with turbo off. It works fine as long as all 4 cores don't ramp up to full speed.

allow me to clarify on my post, the power supply works fine for the stock system, some users here are just pushing it way harder than that for benchmarks and stressing the power supply
it is working exactly as designed though, we are using it outside that design spec
update: just realized this was the wrong forum - still useful info though -
YAY for unlocked BLCK generators.... now i need to find that elusive PLL
