I would have thought dell would have learned its throttling lesson with the M15X.... So now we're getting punished for buying something higher spec?
Hopefully it was just a bad batch of cards...

Just tried Cat 9.12 and it wasn't pretty. No flickering but it looked like it lost more than 50% of it's performance after 3 minutes of playing with it. Then it locked up. Similar to what Joker saw.

I wonder how that is going to affect over all performance in game. Are you still able to max out Borderlands?

nm you just answered that. I think I want to call and cancel my order now..

Exact same thing just happened in 3DMark06.

I can max out Borderlands on a single 4870. This problem will affect people who want to benchmark more.

Were 9.12s out for the 4870s when you had your old one ?... Are people who have R1 using 9.12s and reporting anything abnormal ?...

sigh...maybe i shoulda just kept my M15x (sent it out today) at least that was easily fixed. i really wanted the M17x because i craved a more powerful system. maybe i'll just get an area 51 desktop with a 5970. and an m11x as a companion.

    @ Mandrake

Well can't say I am looking to Bench but feel a little ticked that I would spend the extra money on the dual cards if I can't use them to get the most out of the few games I may play. It was kinda on a whim I got the dual cards. :(

Just wasted 2 hrs with a tech, showed him vids of the system flickering at stock etc. At the end of the convo he tells me his level 2 tech wants to change out the vid cards because he thinks the memory is defective. Told him 2 other guys with similar configs had the same problem so I doubt it. Anyway, he gave me a reference number so I'll have to call customer care and see if I can get an exchange otherwise it's refund time.

OK, lemme see if I have this correct..... is it safe to say for the moment, that the throttling & flickering issues are only appearing on i7 920XM machines..... and that throttling is only a product of xtreme stressing of the CPU..... and that flickering only appears with certain games, with certain drivers? In otherwords, users with the i7-720 or 820QM processors will not experience these issues, correct? And if so, it sounds like future users only need avoid the 920XM, at least for the moment, right?

    :)

Anything under 920XM (820 720 etc etc) Isnt effected my Flickering and stuttering. I think its a bad batch of 920XM.

It's a power issue with the 920xm pushing it past it's limit, pretty clear cut at this point. It's no coincidence that all of us with 920's are experiencing flickering. Couple that with my kill a watt tests and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what's wrong. Too bad none of us with 920s has an older M6400 power brick to test with. Witcher has a 720 and 920 right? Maye he can do some further testing if he hasn't already.

    Hmmm

    Highly unlikely.

The CPU is the LAST thing I would say is faulty. I'd blame a Dell BIOS engineer, power supply made in China, etc before I blame Intel.

.....Ok look if it was a faulty CPU it wouldn't boot...

The CPU wouldnt make the screen flicker ... and the odds of 3 CPU's exhibiting the SAME symptoms would be astronomical

It's definitely not faulty 920xm's. It's the PSU/bios throttling combo as usual with Dell. I'd be shocked if I was a newbie to all this but this is par for the course so far.

Put up GPU-z during the micro stutter and you'll see it throttle temporarily and then go back to full speed.

so has anyone with a 920xm experienced zero problems or has everyone with the 920's reported some problems. i'm willing to order it and if it ends up having serious issues i'm just gonna get the area 51, i just want a powerfull system.

Do you have frontline fuel of war? It pushes the video cards pretty hard. That gave me flickering right away but vantage doesn't. Just depends on the application and in what way it stresses the system from what I've observed so far.
