There is hope then.

I would have thought dell would have learned its throttling lesson with the M15X.... So now we're getting punished for buying something higher spec?
Hopefully it was just a bad batch of cards... -
Does Balanced Power limit the maximum CPU output ?..
-
Just tried Cat 9.12 and it wasn't pretty. No flickering but it looked like it lost more than 50% of it's performance after 3 minutes of playing with it. Then it locked up. Similar to what Joker saw.
-
Yeah that does not sound good
....

-
nm you just answered that. I think I want to call and cancel my order now..
They pushed my delivery back again to the 23rd -
-
Can someone test if throttlestop works?
-
-
-
I am not havign issues ... Did a windows restore that some one told me wouldn't work and everythign is back to normal
-
sigh...maybe i shoulda just kept my M15x (sent it out today) at least that was easily fixed. i really wanted the M17x because i craved a more powerful system. maybe i'll just get an area 51 desktop with a 5970. and an m11x as a companion.

Hey Moo load up the 9.12s if you already didnt and report back...
-
I ran 3DMark06 again and in the second scene I saw it flicker and then the FPS dropped by 30 and stayed down until the system locked.

@ Mandrake
Well can't say I am looking to Bench but feel a little ticked that I would spend the extra money on the dual cards if I can't use them to get the most out of the few games I may play. It was kinda on a whim I got the dual cards. -
Just wasted 2 hrs with a tech, showed him vids of the system flickering at stock etc. At the end of the convo he tells me his level 2 tech wants to change out the vid cards because he thinks the memory is defective. Told him 2 other guys with similar configs had the same problem so I doubt it. Anyway, he gave me a reference number so I'll have to call customer care and see if I can get an exchange otherwise it's refund time.
-
everything will be fixed... just chill out
Downclock and play some games until then ....
Its not a true solution but given the options .. -
some one ship me a 920 to test and lay this to rest
-
-
I was semi-serious :/
It would lay it ALL to res -

OK, lemme see if I have this correct..... is it safe to say for the moment, that the throttling & flickering issues are only appearing on i7 920XM machines..... and that throttling is only a product of xtreme stressing of the CPU..... and that flickering only appears with certain games, with certain drivers? In otherwords, users with the i7-720 or 820QM processors will not experience these issues, correct? And if so, it sounds like future users only need avoid the 920XM, at least for the moment, right?
-
So far, haven't seen anyone with a 720 or 820 complain yet.
-
correct my 720 ran WPRIME 1024M and Furmark on Xtreme mode and installed GTA 4 while browsing the internet for 15 minutes ...
No stutter -
Although, not many with 720/820's are on here becnhmarking either.

It's a power issue with the 920xm pushing it past it's limit, pretty clear cut at this point. It's no coincidence that all of us with 920's are experiencing flickering. Couple that with my kill a watt tests and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what's wrong. Too bad none of us with 920s has an older M6400 power brick to test with. Witcher has a 720 and 920 right? Maye he can do some further testing if he hasn't already.
-
Hmmm
Highly unlikely.
The CPU is the LAST thing I would say is faulty. I'd blame a Dell BIOS engineer, power supply made in China, etc before I blame Intel. -
.....Ok look if it was a faulty CPU it wouldn't boot...
The CPU wouldnt make the screen flicker ... and the odds of 3 CPU's exhibiting the SAME symptoms would be astronomical -
Hey what about the OP who first reported having an R2 ?.. He/she has a 920 and never reported any problems at all .... From what i read they played plenty of games on the machine and never had any issues at all....... Hmmm...

ok guys i don't know if this helps but i pay the saboteur and runs perfect all max out, play prototype runs perfect all max out, play tomb rider underworld and is smoth, the only problem i saw is on the resident evil benchmark all max out on the third test i see micro sttutering like the frames drop down from 60 to 40 and then go back to 60 fast
-
-
With witcher saying his works i think its time some one sent me a CPU
-
It's definitely not faulty 920xm's. It's the PSU/bios throttling combo as usual with Dell. I'd be shocked if I was a newbie to all this but this is par for the course so far. -
Put up GPU-z during the micro stutter and you'll see it throttle temporarily and then go back to full speed. -
I have a M17 PSU at my brothers but its only rated for 220W
But hey that can go over 220 for surelook at mandrake and the M17

so has anyone with a 920xm experienced zero problems or has everyone with the 920's reported some problems. i'm willing to order it and if it ends up having serious issues i'm just gonna get the area 51, i just want a powerfull system.

Do you have frontline fuel of war? It pushes the video cards pretty hard. That gave me flickering right away but vantage doesn't. Just depends on the application and in what way it stresses the system from what I've observed so far.
