Can't help, I never tried it myself. Follow the post above yours. Anything to throttle the CPU back should work.

Don't feel too bad. We found this issue right away so a massive return to Dell will be happening soon.

It's a crappy band-aide but unless someone identifies the smoking gun we are reliant on Dell. If my second R2 has it which I suspect it will they will both go back.

Well, looks like I am keeping my R2 with the 720QM CPU, I gamed on it a good 4 hours in the later levels of Borderlands, I had no problems of any kind. Only thing is there is this level where there is a lot of going on, snowing, some smoke and other heavy rendering stuff, I did noticed a drop in the FPS, but not bad, I don't have FRAPS installed yet, I will do that soon.

On another quick note, I couldn't find a service manual for the R2, or the R1 for that matter, just want to know how to properly disassemble it for routine maintenance, fan cleaning etc, if anyone has a link for the guide I will appreciate it ...

This should definitely work. Set your turbo multipliers in the 17 range for all four and the flickering should be gone. Make SURE you are using Dell's stock drivers since they seem to work best. I think Alienware will figure out a solution to this. It's obviously serious enough to be affecting all 920xm based configurations. My system will be captured tomorrow by AW Miami.

    Here's a vid of what I'm experiencing:

excuse the bad framerate, I forgot to tell fraps to record half screen.
The vid was taken with all turbo multipliers on x17.

Pretty cool that they are going to get your system and test it. almost all captures go to Dell and I really do wonder what happens after that. lol

Keep pushing the multipliers lower until it does work for you. Every 920 chip is different. Are you using the stock driver?

That's stuttering. It could be the after affect of throttling.

Here's a repost of mine again:

    <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mPzUSROu5WE&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mPzUSROu5WE&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='425' height="344"></embed></object>

So 100% of 920xm users have been experiencing this flickering so far. No single driver has been able to resolve it. Another problem that occurs is that the system has periods of microstutter (the GPU drops its clocks to 300 mhz) during heavy action in a game and what's observed is a massive framerate drop (e.g. 60 fps to 30 fps).

The only workaround for now is to use evga eleet and drop the turbo multipliers until it's semi stable. Either that or disable turbo mode altogether.

It is so obvious it's hard to imagine this was ever tested internally with Dell.

BTW, looking forward to your report from AW headquarters. ;)

It's possible that these units while in the pre-production phase never get tested with games and benchmarks.

I bet a diagnostic is run and windows with drivers and that's about it.

that's good to know. in that case, my suspicion is the xfire cable is not seated properly or the other possibility is the game itself. I don't have a copy of Borderlands on me. I have Crysis, though. Do you happen to have Crysis?

the 3 second video? i can sort of see the clouds flicker, but not the entire screen like it showed in Borderlands. If you tell me if flickers in Crysis demo similar to what it did in the Borderlands that's enough.

I'll go fire up my R2 and try Crysis again.

I think we just need to give Alienware a chance to sort this out. Once my system is taken tomorrow, they might be able to figure out what's wrong pretty quickly in their labs and issue a fix. I wouldn't RMA my computer just yet.

I've been trying to keep up with this forum, as I ordered a M17x, but with a 720. I was wondering though, has anyone without the 920 really pushed their system and experienced the same results? Or is it just an isolated incident with the 920's?
