Sometimes I cannot get it back with removing all the power.

Edit: This morning it's every reboot.

I have the exact same issue. I was actually about to post about it but you beat me to it. I had to cut the power and remove the battery at one point to get the machine to shut down after the scroll light started blinking. This system needs a bios revision to fix the latter bug, remove GPU throttling that causes microstutter and be issued a bigger PSU.

When he comes by today I'm going to show him the flickering as well as the scroll lock bug. The problem is the scroll lock bug doesn't always happen, it's intermittent. I think I can get it to occur if I raise the vcore + ram voltage.

I'm not doing any further tests w/the machine at this point. I'm finishing up restoring it near factory spec and then installing a few games so I can show the engineer when he gets here to take the system. After that it'll be left in their capable hands to figure out what's wrong. I've asked for a system exchange but I'll see what they say. If they can repair it without any nicks/scratches to it and it works fine, I'll keep it I suppose.

    Slight change in direction here

Will the 5870 card be available in a xfire option ?

if not how will the single 5870 compare to the Dual 4870 cards ? (in theory of course)

They're crossfire compatible so should be, performance wise you're probably talking 20% boost per card, with slightly more efficient crossfire, so perhaps 25% faster than a crossfire 4870 setup, dependant on use of GDDR5.

Hi guys, after a little chat with dell US chat about the price of buying the RGB LED screen ( over $1000 ), I emailed my rep here in the UK asking him to get me this upgrade or I will cancel my order. It's weekend here and he will not get back to me until next week.
What do you guys think? I just hope that I made the right choice here.

Needless to say it was the WORST laptop screen I have ever seen. Period.

Haha, they put it on a mobility 5870m marketing slide previously as well :)
Its only the lower end chips that dont support crossfire.

One interesting thing though from Sleeyo's link is that the 5850m is listed as having a choice of DDR3, GDDR3 and GDDR5, whereas for the 5870 it lists only GDDR5. Does that mean the slide is incorrect or Acer broke spec/overclocking/reflashed mobile 5850s...hmmm.

Depends on who is providing the cards to Acer, alex.

If ATI is manufacturing the actual cards, then GDDR5 would be the only option.

If Acer has, let's say, foxconn making them and ATI providing the chips only, then they could probably design and mfr for GDDR3.

Aye, just a shame though, as it means we may well see a muddying of the water similar to the ASUS 4870(50) vs AW 4870 thing. I mean Dell have even admitted now they did actually test GDDR5 4870s, but decided to go for the GDDR3.

Those early vantage numbers for the 5870m from quadzilla seem to show about 18% or so greater performance than a 4870 if I'm not mistaken. It's about in line with what I was expecting. Pretty impressive scores, I'd like to see how far it can OC.

    @Joker
Yeah its about where I was expecting the cards to be, they're roughly on par with the 5750 desktop card. They should be rather nice in crossfire with some overclocking, wonder what spec memory is on them and how hot Quad's gets? Quad's Crysis results (27.5 fps at 1920x1200 DX10, High) is definately the strongest single mobile card result I've seen by a fair way.

What's the usual 280m/4870m score in Crysis with similar settings? The OC factor is what I'm most curious about. If it OC's poorly, then it's nothing special. If it OC's like the desktop counterpart, then wow.

As I remember a single GTX280 at 1080p (Sorry 1920x1200 was a typo above), in DX10, High settings is looking about 20fps, at very high settings that drops to about 17-18fps, so 20-21 to 27.5 is a decent boost.
I dont have Crysis installed right now or I'd go find out for you!

Edit: Actually I've still got the Crysis patches backed up, so give me 10-15 minutes and I'll find out for you!

I'll run tests for comparison DX10 high and DX10 very high with a single card so we can get a good comparison. Its been a long time since I ran the benchmark so I may be mistaken. Hell my 17-18fps might have been dual cards :D

Testing both settings should make it clear just where these cards stand.
Crysis is about 2/3 installed now. Installing from a blu-ray drive with old firmware I cant update is painful :(
    Damned Sony firmware update protection.
