But then why would games run perfectly fine with Xfire disabled?

And why does this not happen running Vantage? The GPU checks, with Xfire, in Vantage run perfectly on my system and yield over 11,000 GPU points, yet I cannot game in Xfire.

I strongly believe it's power issue. Have you guys tried the new 10.1 driver? Here (Support most mobile cards, but you might need to modify it)

Well, my order according to Dells order status page says supposed to arrive tommarow, but also says still in production. I have NBD shipping....sigh, sounding like need to call my rep and work him over for some more freebies.

.... Because if 1 gpu is bad it will do that.

When you use crossfire it uses both so if oneesses up the whole thing Is going to mess up.

Also games are alot more stressful on xfire

Anyone happen to have any other emails for Dell I can ping regarding this....this is just getting a bit annoying.

I posted a GTA4 benchmark run in the R2 bench thread yesterday. I set everything on the highest settings except draw distance (which I cranked up as high as I could go without exceeding 1GB VRAM. It was playable at those settings as well, though I may dial the settings down a little to ensure it doesn't get slow.

Called AW tech support on the second HDD bracket. I gave him the specific part # from the system configuration (F584N). After about 5 mins on hold while the tech looked filled out the part order, he told me it should arrive in about 2-3 days. I'll let y'all know what parts I actually receive. Hopefully bracket, interposer, and screws.

    BTW, the HDD0 bay doesn't have/need an interposer--it's a straight SATA connector.

I've seen this on my Alienware area-51 m15x. If you did a fresh reinstall it's likely the cause. There are very specific instructions on how to install OSD. Call Alienware tech support and have them guide you through the installation.

Do you have the newest drivers? From what I have heard the 4870 x2 is capable of pushing those numbers into the 40s or even higher.

Ran it with stock dell drivers. Plus I ran it without killing lots of additional services first--I just wanted to see what real-world performance would look like. I'm sure the cat10.1 drivers will work better, but from what I understand mobility modder doesn't work just yet. I'll play with it some more when I get home today and see what I can get from it.

That's the issue with Dell/Alienware.. They forget about you very easily once they get your money. The drivers you get on the day of purchase are most likely the one's you'll have 2 years from now. At least that's been my experience..

I was sort of hoping the 4870's would do better than this. 3.5k machines should run old games fluently.

GTA4, being a console port, is not particularly efficient on PC to begin with.

Remember that I didn't do anything special before running the bench, I just ran it. If memory serves, a run from the previous day (on a clean Win7 installation) was in the mid 40s, but I've blanked the disk since then so I don't have a copy of the results.

true it is a ported game which during the transfer to computer probably has alot of bad coding to do with it.

Did you have to pay anything for this part? I am on the phone with AW tech support right now, and he's telling me I have to pay $59 for it. Told him I wanted to speak with a supervisor, he said he didn't think I would want to wait over 15 minutes to speak with one LOL. When I told him I didn't mind waiting he said, ok hold a few minutes and let me see wheat I can do....

edit: after 1 hour, a supervisor is filling out the order...patience is a dish best served with at least a 6-pack of beer

The 820's are glitching now? *facepalm*

Where's my headache medicine? Nah, I think I just need a drink. All of this QA BS is a total buzzkill.

I just want a BAMF notebook that plays my fav games and works like a champ. Thought $3.5k was enough to achieve that. Hope mine is some sort of cream of the crop and doesn't have these issues, but it's starting to sound like a real crapshoot.

I have my fingers crossed on the stuttering issues. Heck I have them crossed that they will send me the right adapter. I got a 15" bezel for my 17" M6400 as a repair part once. Even if the M5400 was a 15" I needed the control tab (with all the lights and power button) not a screen bezel. LOL

It's down to the 820 now...sigh. Well at least there are no issues with the 720....yet. I am thinking though that the problem is widespread and the high powered cpus made it worse, but the slower ones will soon follow.
