Now that I've had a chance to game on mine (took awhile to get it up and running for work stuff first), gaming seems to be fine for me. Mind you I am running an i7 720QM with a Single 4870M card. Maxed out both L4D and Borderlands and after some extended play times, no flickering on my system.
Hopefully that helps to narrow down the problem...
-
Boy, this just makes me want to get the 920XM again!!
-
My 820 should be here in a few days so ...I will evaluate and see
-
No kidding.
-
Got it for free. I told them mine was missing.
If you go to the detailed summary on the dell support site (enter your service tag and look for "System Configuration" on the left navigation column) then look for a line item that says:
1 F584N ASSEMBLY..., BRACKET..., HDD, W/CON, SECOND..., M17X
I figure it says the system came with one, so I was entitled to it.
I called Alienware support @ (866) 287-6727, not Dell. Don't know if that made a difference or not, but I the call was almost immediately answered and resolved in 15 mins. -
Just to update, I played Mass Effect for about 2 hours and the CPU temps maxed at 66C and the fans were blowing pretty fast.
I don't have a GPU temp since HWMontior only gives me Processor temps and Everest seems to only give me the current temp. Anyone know of a program I can use to track both?
Also, do I need a fan controlling program (I had one on my XPS 9400 but I have no idea if it's even necessary for this system). -
No fan prggy for the M17x.
Get a hold of the AMD GPU Clock Tool for mobility - should work for temps. -
Maybe it is a power problem. Everyone with the flickering says it stops when they disable Xfire. Feel bad for you guys having problems with a machine costing that much.
-
I tried but could figure out which program to dl. Could you provide a link?
-
Hey, does anyone else notice that the webcam light turns on and off randomly? I think dell is watching us! lol..

dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate

Sorry i was out at the mall. And didnt have time to show proof.
It seems SpinalGT may have a solution to the problem.

Man DO I HAVE a story to tell. I went online earlier today to check on my order status. Last check it was supposed to arrive this Friday. So any way, I eagerly scanned the page for my order status. My eyes skidded to a stop when I saw the order status as "changed" with a "call this number" note. I called the number listed and spoke to a CS rep in India who kindly advised me that my order had been canceled due to an "illegal configuration". I'm like what the frick! When were they going to tell me? She transfers me to the sales team in the Philippines. It takes thirty painful minutes to pry the info out of her as to why it was canceled. She said Dell has been canceling R2 orders because of hardware compatibility problems. News to me! There's no mention in the boards. But Dell is so flaky who the frick really knows why it was canceled. Here is the kicker. If I place another order it will not ship until Feb 20th. I have to read the writing on the wall and really think if this is the system is for me. Frankly I wanted it for video rendering/editing (Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro) more than for gaming. Oh, I will game though. Any videophiles on this thread using an AW for video editing? How about a serious recommendation on a video editing laptop? Peace. Pants.

Looks like its a unfixable problem...
-
Nah.
I bet it was a sku error (ie DVD drive) or something similar. -
I don't know. It's so frustrating though.
-
I wouldn't say it's an unfixable problem quite yet. Well to that degree anything could be fixed just some fixes are more drastic than others. Also I tried to do a config on dell.com for the ultimate m17x-r2 and there were no compatability issues flagged, so if they have determined an unfixable problem then they haven't even updated the website so I am doubting the incompatible thing for now.
-
What do you suspect the hardware challenges are?
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
I've been in "build" since 1/22. Rep tells me the delay is due to a shortage of or problem with the wireless card (Intel 6300). FWIW. -
Dell has no idea what they are doing. they are incompetent. They told me last week that they had to cancel and reorder my system due to software issues...
DOes anyone know if dell has a complaint line or web adress so people can complain about their poor cutomer service???? -
Join the club I'm STILL stuck on "Order received" This being the Fourth day now..Its irritating. My Rep said it was because i payed via EFT. But my money left my account straight away. Meaning it should of been paid on the fifth which it wasnt. -.-
-
Nice. I can't wait to try it out Friday in my 25-man group.
-
EFT? yeah once it leaves your account it has to be verified by there bank and there only going to verify it on business days
-
all this makes me nervous about ordering a R2
maybe time to wait for R3 -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Might be a good time to stay nervous. -
Wasn't that your original plan?
-
Yeah it takes 2 to 3 days to clear. Its been three days (Average it clears is on the 2nd day. Unless there bank is crap.)
-
R3 you think its going to be problem free? Id wait till the end of this year and get an r2 that way all the kinks are worked out another year waiting for r3 is ganna be awhile
-
Well I was debating waiting for USB 3 but I don't think that would have come as part of a R3 refresh.
The M6500 is just getting USB included sometme this month. Figured Dell would do the same for all the other lines -
Okay so where does one pre-order an Asus G73?
-
Okay, so pointless question in the AW forum.
Go use google or ask in the Asus thread
-
That's my point. I'm outta here. GLTA. Peace. Pants.
-
try exotic-pc

Don't feed the trolls. They get outta hand this late at night

Not sure if anyone has tried to use the Intel VT for Windows XP mode or not, but I contacted Alienware Tech Support today about an issue I came across.
When I try to run Windows XP mode, it says it can't run due to Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT). It says to turn it off in the bios, which in the R2, is not there.
So, I told the guy what was goin on, and they transferred me to their higher up.
He agreed it's not there, as well as the missing option to turn on and off the VT technology as a whole. I'm assuming by default the i7's have it enabled, as CPU-Z detected the VT instructions.
He said check back in about a month, and a bios update should be released. -
Hes just upset that the M17x has a few bugs. This is something i really did expect. Hopefully with a BIO update and a new more powerful PSU it should dissapear easy.
-
those pesky trolls are too much

FYI
396639466 short K1NFP LCD,17WUXGA,RGB,LED,AG,SMSNG, have Quality issue, Panel support on 2/19 week
Stock for RGB screen will be in house to build 19/2
Could RGB display cause flickering? -
no it cant be the screen... IT CANT BE !!!!! ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
-
Well, I suppose a test on a different display will help to prove/disprove that. I'm still waiting for someone to ship me theirs to test out ;-)
-
Troll?! Nice.
-
Where did you get this info?
-
Well I should have my 820 in a couple days, any tests you want me to try out ?
-
Yeah, that's a very interesting bit of inside documentation... the plot thickens.... This issue of the screen being unavailable for some reason correlates with what the Dell rep that accidentally opened up and admitted there was a backlog of some sort due to the wireless cards AND the RGB LED screen.
-
My replacement is beeing held back also. I got an email today stating that my order is beeing held due to a componant shortage.
-
Yes I asked what the hold up here in Australia is. I posted:
short K1NFP LCD,17WUXGA,RGB,LED,AG,SMSNG, have Quality issue, Panel support on 2/19 week
My reps reply. I don't know what the Quality issue is tho. -
FWIW, the screen isn't the issue. Yeah, I know Dell has supply issues with the RGBLED, but it isn't the problem.
Brandon hooked his up to his HDTV and the results were the same... -
Im getting a hold up too...I havn't even gotten a ETA...
-
I wonder if the new stock will be Samsung, and will Joker post results soon ?? but with a build of 19-02 I have heaps of time for all to fix the issues.
-
The only RGBLED's Dell uses are Samsungs.
