    Spinal,

I'd recommend two choices for you.

    1. disable x-fire and wait to see if the BIOS update corrects this.
    2. Call tech support now, they will likely send a technician to check your second card is installed properly.

Actually I am getting a technician tomorrow because I need a keyboard replacement.

Do you think that I can ask this technician to check if the second card is placed right for me?

So I don't have to call for a second technician...

I'd need more info on this from someone that can consistently reproduce. If you are running certain games and pull AC power, it's feasible this could happen. There's a lot of power management taking place on these beasts, pulling AC power during power transitions can sometimes have this result. It's not going to harm your system.

absolutely, as soon as the keyboard is removed he or she will easily be able to check that the x-fire cable is properly seated.

It's easy to reproduce, just install the modded catalyst drivers, then when you plug the AC Power out it freezes.

Yea, I lost a lot of work in borderlands because the plug accidentally came out.
I am happy that the problem was successfully targeted and am very happy on how alienware handled the situation.
    Good job!

I have a question for nagshead,

When you mention that you don't have a ETA for the BIOS update this means what?
How long to get a BIOS ready for the systems? Days? Weeks? Months?

Here is a different problem in addition to the psu.

When unplugging the psu , it does not freezes , but when plugging it back, the laptop does not show that it is plugged in even it is plugged , it just show battery mode. I would have to restart to make the laptop recognize that the psu is plugged in.

    Can someone test this.

Also, Nagshead, is VT-X supported by the motherboard?
I can't get it to work on virtualbox, it's enabled in settings, but disabled when running an OS?

Installing any drivers not qualified on the system can have unpredictable results. It's not going to harm your system, just don't pull the AC power when you're on battery if you want to use these drivers.

    Nagshead ,

Dis-regard the last post by me. My psu plug actually crap out just now. I can't believe this... So do I call alienware to send me a new PSU ? I just had the laptop for 6 days only and the PSU is now dead.

    I have 86% battery left , what number do i call ?

    definitely not months.

The workaround of disabling turbo mode will have little impact to your gaming experience so we're not going to risk rushing the process. We also want it released as soon as possible.

I don't know the answer. I don't get a lot of requests for virtualization on gaming systems, it's a feature used more by corporate networks. I'm pretty sure it's not officially supported, but sounds like you'll know tomorrow if it's capable.

Should nested paging work? It was implemented in the nehalem processors and clarksfield processors are based on nehalem.

We'll see that if the second card is placed wrong. Because this turbo mode is not affecting the flickering. Enabled or Disabled it still flickers.
    I'm kind of disappointed.
Because mine seems to be the worst so far.

Seeing as you have so many issues, I would just go ahead and ask for a replacement. You get to keep the current machine until you get the new one, then you send it back.

Just bought one myself, how do I know if it's the R2 version? I presume it is since I bought it like a month after the OP did and his was an R2?

Also, how is everyone enjoying theirs so far? I'm anxiously awaiting my Alienware! Got the 3 year CompleteCare, which worked wonders for my current laptop from Dell, can't recommend it enough

Its an R2, you have an i7 processor. Though you should have got an RGB LED Display, it's much beter then its "dual" CCFL counterpart, but this won't compromise performance, so don't worry too much.

Totally agree, I use VM's for modeling Linux networks for work. , almost a mini test network. A gaming notebook would be almost best of both worlds, the CPU for VM's and the GPU's for gamming....

It really is something that would be used a lot I think

If best buy started selling the asus g73... do you think you could get away with swapping a m17x's 4870 with the 5870 in the asus... and then returning it, only paying a restocking fee for a graphics card upgrade?

Not like I condone this action or would actually do it myself, just speculation of course!

All i7s support VT-x (though not all support VT-d). It seems (after a brief google session) that it usually has to be enabled/disabled in BIOS. I don't recall seeing a setting on M17x, and virtualbox 3.1.2 has the .

Any chance that option can be made available? Efficient virtualization would be nice, esp with so many proc cores to play with!

It should only take a BIOS update to beable to use the 5870s in the R2. I hope. So you could sell the Xfire 4870s and Replace them with one 5870.

Yup, I agree gaming is so much more than what's on the surface. The gaming community is a larger economic force than the scientific community when it comes to driving technological advancements. We live in interesting times.

I was not trying to imply virtualization isn't important, just that it's not something I follow closely or get asked about very often so I'm not a good source of info for that.

yeah but to get the 5870 you've gotta buy the g73... to keep it, you'll have to return the g73 with *something* inside... hence a 4870.

The 5870 in the G73 won't fit in the R2. Asus uses a proprietary design for their MXM cards.

So don't go ripping off best buy just yet...

As long as the 5870 is a normal MXM 3.0b type card.

And the R2's BIOS has the correct strings.

    Yes.

Assuming the MXM of the 5870 is the same as 4870 (Which is most likely will be.) and the R2's get a BIO update. Then yes.

Sadly that won't work, the 5870 in the G73 is 'Created' differently to other 5870s meaning it will only fit the G73.
