It is confirmed that 5870 is being produced in the MXM 3.0 Type B form.

secondly, who creates a standard 5870, then? -
-
nobody right now
MXM is defined by size and pin connectors. Asus just doesn't use reference size but hey do use the correct slot.
Its up to who ever makes the cards to decide how to do it . MXM is just a format that is smiled on my ODM when making it cards so people can upgrade later. Its more of an unspoken rule TBH.
Asus does it for
1. money
2. Simplicity -

, not like the m17x. talking about difficult haha
-
1. they're not going to make a 6870(or equivalent) that fits the g73.
2. your 5870 from your g73 won't fit in any other laptop.
From what I heard you saying about how dell has switched to using the standard mxm type b by learning from the m1730, it seems asus not doing that is the complete opposite of money-saving and simplicity. -
No for asus its different they have the capacity to make EVERYTHING for their laptop motherboard and GPU so for them its simpler and they don't have to worry about some idiot trying to make a different GPU work. Its why their warranty is so cheap

Asus is good in many ways but when it comes to upgrades man it sucks those gaming machines are good for a short period of time, i prefer a company that can and allow you to change the graphics card and not solder onto the board but hey that in a way is the future too everything onto the board!
-
As long as they can keep you buying new laptops instead of just upgrading the old they are happy. -
Exactly mfractal, i prefer to upgrades components simply instead of having to spend another fortune for some graphics card, also this is why we are seeing a rise of external graphics card. I have nothing with buying a new machine when i need too and its time too but if i just want to upgrade the card then why not, another reason why i can't buy sony laptops they are getting really good but the fact it takes so much work to just get to the hard drive and cpu etc.. i just couldn't waste my time. I hope everything gets fixed soon.
-
I prefer upgrading components over buying a new system as well. I'm glad that option is available to us in the form of mxm 3.0b but it still comes down to Dell/AW issuing bios updates for the latest cards. As long as that happens and we see updates for the 5870 and beyond, we should be fine at least until next year. The con of doing all this is that you do not have warranty on the new cards if they're bought from a 3rd party. I think if you buy them from Dell it's still a limited warranty. -
-
My stance on this whole problem is, if I have to wait for a bios fix to get my system performing high enough to run benchmarks I might as well wait for the 5870s. Both my systems will go back assuming my G73 eventually makes it's way here.
-
Well since you are an avid benchmarker, the 5870 setup would be more ideal for you. Since the crossfire 4870 setup works as fast as a desktop 5850, that's more than enough for me right now. Another 15-20% won't really make any difference in the games that I play. -
Has anyone else besides me had stuck or dead pixels on there RGB panel? Just wondering how common this is. I have a replacment beeing shipped. I am a bit nervous.
-
-
I think the tests done were mainly with GPU-bound shooters, etc that would show close results.
An MMO OTOH is usually CPU bound, so every bit there helps, in which case 920 would be optimal.... I am not rich despite rumors and decided on my reorder to with the 820 because of this very question since I do about 2/3 MMO and 1/3 FPS.
Hope this helps. -

Love your avatar btw, it is ... freaky! -
-
5150 joker, i didn't know that if you buy the graphics card from dell the individual parts don't have a extended warranty. As long as dellienware fixes the problem with a bios update and connects the correct cables and not put tape on one of the gpus, then we will be ok 5870 and beyond, i agree a year or so.
-
Random FYI, I called Dell to see how much a i7-920XM costs to buy as an upgraded part and it was $2600.
-
I can get a Maxed R1 for that!
-
Man are you sure call centre guy is not "High" ? -
So what was the timeline on the M17x R1 DPC latency fix?
I really hope the M17x R2 flickering issue doesn't follow the same timeline. -
I once called for a x9100 and if I remember correctly they quoted me around $2K for that also.
-
Unless I read that wrong, and you were referring to dual 5870's... though I don't believe there's a laptop with that setup yet. -
Did a bit of gaming, nothing stressfull IMHO, but DAMM..the fan sounds like a jet engine on wind up...is it supposed to be this loud ?
-
@woods, thats the price of a good cooling system and keeping your GPU's functional. Thats normal when they begin to heat up. Just put on some headphones
-
Also on aneother note. I DID get the flickering..BAD when I was Full Screen playing a few games later last night, I am now playing windowed and no flickering....
on aneother aneother note...the VM situation just SUCKS ...hear that AW......SUCKS for no VM support.....its damm near a deal breaker -

Except the unplug issue everything turn correctly for me, damn I love this machine.....

I promised an update after I ran a few tests, Furmark 1.8 and Prime 95. No problems so far.....with that being said I'm not gonna go searching for anymore problems out of fear of finding one and having to send this back!
I noticed the fans run pretty quiet when on a desk but if you move the laptop to a place where the air flow gets blocked the fans pick up pretty quickly; I was wondering if I need to possibly look into buying a cooling pad?

I'm gonna buy a cooler board anyway. -
But, I'd call it a notebook, desktop replacement, or cement block. -
This is why I don't have animals.
