I hope it works just as advertised. That would be pretty awesome.

    Now on a side note.

What's the deal with these PSU? Last night I shut down my PC, and noticed a weird sound coming from the PSU. And if I moved it it got worst. That might explain why sometimes when my computer is plugged in, fully charged, the alienhead pulsates as if it were charging the battery.

Anyway, I got a replacement PSU coming soon. I hope that one is fine.

Anyone else notice a sound coming from the PSU after shutting down the laptop?

Hi guys I have been reading this post for a while and have purchased the m17x-R2. Here are my specs:

    Intel Core i7 820QM 1.73GHz
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
    1920 x 1200 RGB LED
Dual 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4870 in CrossfireX
    320GB Raid 0
Intel Ultimate N WiFi Link 6300

I have a few questions and have not been able to locate all of the answers on the forums. I would like to find out how to install the modded ATI 9.12 drivers. Where is the link for the mobility drivers? How do I install the modded drivers? Also, does the turbo mode of the i7 come enabled, if not do I enable it in the bios? Finally, what is a good framerate utility for games?

Thanks to all for helping me make an informed purchase and thanks in advance for the help with these questions.

Download the 9.12 or the 9.12 hotfix drivers direct from AMD/ATI. Download Driverheaven's ATI mobility modder, and follow the provided instructions to mod the ATI drivers (it's a pretty easy process).

Then just run the driver install from the normal setup program. Nice and easy.

Not sure on the I7 turbo.
framerate, FRAPs is the most popular.

Mine came out with the turbo mode enabled. You can check it from the bios if its enabled. Dunno how is the 720qm bios but when you boot your pc press F2 and you get into the bios. There is somewhere that should say performance and there you enable or disable turbo mode.
Also download cpu-z. Using this program you can see exactly what's the clocks of your processor. If turbo mode is disabled you should'nt be able to see any more than 1.6 ghz.
As for the modded drivers I dont really know . But when I had mine and was serching for drivers I found that ASUS has a laptop with the same video cards ( 4870 ) and they offer newer drivers than DELL. Havent tried them though as I only had it for only a week. Hope someone else helps you with this issue

My understanding of the issue is that it's not how much power it's drawing but how the laptop compensates for the change in power distribution when it goes into dual or single core mode and ramps up the processor speed that's causing the flickering. Because it's a power distribution issue in theory it could affect any of the new 2010 Core i7 CPUs.

As stated by Dell disabling Turbo Mode fixed the issue on my laptop, so I'll wait to see if the BIOS update fixes the issue for good before getting into an argument with Dell over it. If I called them now they would just state that they are aware of the issue and are working on a BIOS fix for it, and in the meantime I need to disable Turbo Mode, it'd be a waste of my time. :)

My beast arrived today. Sadly, it flickers with crossfire is enabled :( Runs great without it! Tried playing Dragon Origins with crossfire, did well without flickering for about 10 mins, then pow. Guess I'll have to wait for the updated Bios to come out for the fix? Any idea when its to be released?

those numbers are for 8MB chunks of data though Moo, what I have heard is that lower file sizes like 4k are what are more important for the majority of use

for what it is worth......the samsung controllers supposedly suffer at those smaller file sizes

Me? Highest I could get was 665 on core. 670 was pretty unstable even when outside. That is for vantage too. For crysis was 630. Memory was anywhere between 1100 and 1140 I think. Might have done a few runs at 1150 but it artifcacted a good bit

Not bad at all thats not far off the default clocks for the 5870ms which will be running on a lower process etc, I bet they go some given my tests on the 4850m's, are they completely stable at those clocks? What sort of Vantage GPU score do you hit? (I'm guessing somewhere in the 12-14k region).

Ok so 680 wasn't stable after all :p It worked in L4D 2 but it froze on test 2 of vantage. 670/1150 works fine in vantage however. I've also discovered that the stock Dell drivers work better than all the rest so far.

Joker, to revisit the revised BIOS, do the changes simply allow the 920XM to operate at stock clocks/multipliers (with or without the 5% BIOS kicker) or does it also provide additional headroom for further overclocking via E-Leet or otherwise?
